Damn, not even one of the Slow Rush songs made the cut? Or anything from Woods' gorgeous album? Fleet Foxes made best albums at least, guess it's hard to pick a fave from that, all so good. At least you threw me a bone here with an RBCF song! It's not "Cars in Space" but almost as good....
Oh and "Cars in Space" for SOTY b/c c'mon, if you didn't play that in your car (driving in space perhaps) with the windows down at max volume this Summer, did you even live?*
*No, you didn't.
I somehow, SOMEHOW, forgot Empty Country in my hastily put-together "Top 10 and a couple honorable mentions" in the 50 Best article the other day, so to make up for that, today it gets my vote for best album. No one would argue with that right?
Just noticed no one else has Everything Everything - Re-Animator on their lists. Not even honorable mention... One day they'll be appreciated for their genius work, one day...
2020 was a slow year for me yikes… I spent more time digging up older music then listening to new stuff, but it was all new to me, and honestly Night Moves was all I wanted to listen to after discovering them, so…
But here’s 10 albums that are actually from 2020 that I listened to and enjoyed the most, I guess. Old faves like The Strokes, Real Estate, and Car Seat Headrest too. Caribou, Plants and Animals, STRFKR, and Pure X were also solid.
Wolf Parade - Thin Mind
Gengahr – Sanctuary
Tame Impala – The Slow Rush
Vundabar - Either Light
Woods - Strange To Explain
RBCF - Sideways To New Italy
Spun Out - Touch the Sound
Fleet Foxes – Shore
Everything Everything- Re-Animator
Gardens & Villa - Gordon Von Zilla Presents
Ah shit I missed this article last week. The Clientele are my kinda band. Lowkey gorgeous music. Sad as it may be that 2014 show was empty, it's not surprising.
They are Deeper-ish, and that is a good thing, and this is a good album. They also remind me of Spun Out (which is also Deeper-ish) which Stereogum bafflingly completely ignored earlier this year, yet this is AOTW... I'm gonna have to assume not one staff member of the 'Gum heard the Spun Out album, b/c I refuse to believe no one liked it enough to at least mention it existed. It's one of the best albums of 2020.
Be honest, who clicks on articles that they don't even care about the topic just b/c they saw a large amount of comments and wanted to dive into that nice deep comment pool?

Nope, not on 2019 or 2018's list... I'm gonna assume they totally meant to put them on, total blind spot, kicking themselves right now, all that. I like a good amount up above (Pet Shimmers, Silverbacks, Peel Dream, etc) but yeah no, Nation of Language > all them. Great debut.
I didn't know anyone even knew Methyl Ethel existed, forget about being a fan of them and wanting them on SNL. Love them. +1
And of course Wild Pink are great too
Very weird. I'm a rock/indie rock guy (think that's obvious) and SNL finally decides to put on a lot of rock acts....and they're all 20+ year legacy acts. And I love The Strokes, and they had a new album after a pretty long hiatus, so that's all good. Jack White was a last minute replacement, OK... Foo Fighters now though? Why. It's too bad there's no newer rock acts from the past 5 years that are hot and hip and youthful and just plain great* they could have on instead...
*My vote would go to Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever if anyone is wondering
Yep, Waltzed is great. The new one is pretty good, but a little short at only 8 songs. Still solid, but not Top 10 of 2020 material or anything. Love the album closer "Bold" though, one of their best.
Ha, I was literally, and I do literally mean literally, just listening to Modern Nature yesterday. I don't know why, I think they're on one of my "bands to check out" lists. Very purty music, I think they're made up of ex-members of... I wanna say Mazes? Ultimate Painting? Both? Neither? Whatever, it's good stuff.
New band discovery alert: Pool Holograph.
Anyone else heard of these guys before? Stereogum slippin' again... no mention of them at all here. The other site reviewed their latest album earlier this month, and in the header it said "The rock group evokes Deerhunter..." and I stopped reading and went to listen to this new one, plus their 2017 and 2015 albums. And, uhh, yeah, very Deerhunter-esque so much so, a lot of their songs could easily be Deerhunter (or Atlas Sound) songs. But they're not ripping them off, just in the same wheelhouse. It's a good thing. If you like Deerhunter or Atlas Sound (I think a couple of you around here do..?) go give them a listen.
If you need a couple suggestions go with "Medieval Heart", "Black Wall", "6PM Lens."
Wow some great work, love a good piece of album art. One of my pet peeves are album covers that are just photos or a picture of the band/singer/artist. Something ostensibly any clown could have taken or done. Gimme ART, something unique, singular, creative. Like this! (Or literally any/all Oh Sees album covers)
Great new song. Never been a huge fan but all their albums are solid. I don't think A Coliseum Complex Museum made my Top 10 of 2016 but I definitely liked it a lot, especially "The Plain Moon."
You didn't listen to The End of That or Waltzed in from the Rumbling?? If you can make the time, check'em out. I'm biased, I love all their albums, but I think they are a highly underrated band.
Man that's a long list but you still snubbed Plants and Animals... not cool.
Plants and Animals - The Jungle, also out this Friday. Their last album was one of my personal faves of 2016.
