It's not even a lo-fi thing. I love Pavement and like The Microphones & Sebadoh, but Bee Thousand is so lo-fi to the point it sounds demo tape-y to me.
Thanks for the other recommendations, though. I'll give them a chance
Couldn't tell you from when I first started, but most recently it was Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes & Do The Collapse (Those are the albums that have the most tracks in the top ten for the artist on Spotify)
You guys ever have a band that no matter how many times you try, you just can't get into them? That's me & Guided By Voices. I've tried 3-4 times now over the past decade or so & it just isn't happening
I was at a show recently and a comedian made a joke regarding 9/11 (about how they'd forgotten it last year since there weren't enough reminders. Pretty innocuous for a topic like that, I think). I laughed and didn't think they were trying to offend, which is exactly what this is. Nobody's mocking tragedy, they're just observing a very niche perspective and pointing out the ridiculousness of it
I'm a huge MMJ fan and I did not like this record when it first came out, but it has definitely grown on me over the years. I would still probably rank it in their bottom 3 albums, but there's still a lot to like. Even a "bad" MMJ record is still pretty good.
Long time Stereogum reader & made an account to just say that I'm extremely happy "Steam Engine" is not even on here, but is ranked that high. Big fan of the longer, more epic MMJ songs ("Dondante", "Steam Engine", "Rollin' Back", etc.) and they are great at them.
Also, I am firmly on record that the guitar solo from "One Big Holiday" is the best guitar solo of the 21st century.
