Vails nails it. Let's not overlook the guy's mustache crimes either. When some future Leni Riefenstahl makes a film about him, I'm sure Diedrich Bader will get the role: https://2zwmzkbocl625qdrf2qqqfok-wpengine.netdna-ssl.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/190122-SFE-M-ABaderA.jpg
I don’t want to explain away anyone else’s gut reactions, but I think the antipathy toward “Kokomo” has more to do with Mike Love than with the song itself. I can verify that I had absolutely no thoughts about Michael Love or whatever interestinine squabbles they had when this song was a hit. I simply wanted to stab myself in the temple with an icepick and drive into a tree every time that annoying turd came on the radio, which was about every 12 or 13 minutes. It's a 0.5.
One of the replacement Mamas was Phillips’ daughter Mackenzie, who will eventually appear in this column as a member of Wilson Phillips and who later accused her father of incest. It's actually her half-sister Chynna who will appear in this column. Mackenzie Phillips was a TV star on One Day at a Time.
Master and Sherbet, Strangefudge, Pecans Are Pecans, Shake the Lemon Freeze.....
Headhunter is a banger! But Welcome to Paradise was the more popular one in my circle. Hey Poor! You don't have to be poor anymore!
I did a double take when I saw Phil played on All Things Must Pass.....that's news to me! But I guess it's not completely true. He was brought in to play the congas, but they never even turned on his mic. Funny story...... https://www.smoothradio.com/artists/phil-collins/george-harrison-prank/
It's a song I just cannot hate....so I gave it an 8.
Not a G'n'R fan, but November Rain absolutely slaps. Such a great melodic guitar solo.
Peekaboo and Kiss Them For Me are so great. The tablas on Kiss Them For Me were played by a young Talvin Singh, who would later release his own OK album, which despite its humble title, was a stunning fusion of drum-and-bass electronics with Indian classical music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGKIuTOejns
Glad I'm not the only one here who hates Sweet Child O'Mine. Nails on the chalkboard for me.
Amen. I just put new strings on my bass, and that Three Days intro was the first thing I played. Love that one. Seeing them play it at the first Lollapalooza was mind-blowing.
Girl, you know it's true.....I love this song, and their #1 too. Awful and phony, I know, but they've always been a guilty pleasure for me.
Monkey Bush Nothing a Monkey Brazilian can't fix.
Great album. I've read that the whole "let's haze the new bass player" thing was mostly untrue. Recent comments from Hetfield and Ulrich: https://www.kerrang.com/the-news/james-hetfield-explains-why-metallicas-and-justice-for-all-has-no-bass/ Hetfield's guitar is playing the exact same thing as the bass, and they occupy that same low end, so it's impossible to differentiate them in the mix. It is definitely a weird-sounding album (those dry kick-pedal clicks!) but I still love it, lots of great songs on there. That said, it's my least favorite of their 80s albums. Master of Puppets, I mean come on. I had almost forgotten Queensryche opened for them - that was the only time I ever saw Metallica live actually, on the Justice tour. My friends and I were all of the opinion that Queensryche sucked! Though they would win me over a couple years later with Empire. Looking back, seeing both Slayer and Metallica, almost back to back - that was quite the winter of metal for me.
Remixed by Peter Gabriel as Shock the Monkee.
All I can think of is the Alphaville song, which I hear every 12 minutes or so.....hadn't heard that Rod Stewart song in yonks.
Auf Wiedersehen is my favorite. That one and Heaven Tonight showed that they could go dark when they wanted to. First time I heard The Flame on the radio, I couldn't believe it was the same band.
They recorded a whole album of Twin Peaks theme music. It makes my brain feel squishy.
I keep reading Liberian Girl as Libertarian Girl.
a-TITFAC, a-TATFAC, let's find out how he rates that......
I was at the Slayer concert (see below)! Guess I somehow evaded this one, and most of the other '88 number ones too. Running in different circles I guess....
It is the bomb, way better than the original. In fact, thanks to my general disinterest in all things MJ in the 80s, I heard AAF's version first, MJ's much later.
Eventually shortened to just.....poo.
I never heard this song until today. Is that weird? I feel like it's weird. I would give it a 3, but Steve Stevens' righteous shredding raises it to a 5.
South of Heaven is so great, Lombardo's drumming is phenomenal. I still have a very visceral memory of seeing them for the first time on that tour - after a long wait for Slayer to come on, the house lights went down, the stage was bathed in blood red, and that sparse opening guitar riff of South of Heaven filled the auditorium. The explosive drums kicked in and the pit went wild. Fan-fucking-tastic.
I never thought Momentary Lapse could hold a candle to the classic Pink Floyd albums, but I too am a sucker for those soaring Gilmour guitar solos. See also album closer: Sorrow.
I was dubious about the 10 for Only in My Dreams, but then I played the video, and it is indeed quite the earworm. Great melody on the chorus, it will be stuck in my head all day.
Whoa. What an adorable bunch of Ebbheads.
Speaking of eaten comments, I tried to respond to your Voivod post below, but kept getting an error. I think you may have broken something with your Vomited Anal Tract reference.
I think my comment got eaten yesterday (hopefully English literature will survive), but I first heard She Watch Channel Zero booming over a sound system before some punk rock show. I couldn't believe the way they used that Slayer riff. I went out and bought Nation of Millions and Bum Rush the Show the next day. So great, so creative....1988 was a great year for mixing punk, metal, and hip hop.
Love it! I grew up only knowing the Taste of Honey version from 1980, but now I prefer the OG.
I'm very very disappointed in Past Rabbits. Bunnies Bunnies?
Her collection was complete. Nothing else was worth buying.
Don't forget the sweet Bowie sample on Night of the Living Baseheads. Such a great, classic album.
Oh Astley's in the noose, he hasn't got a use, but he's tryyyyin'......... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htNOlBNHlJo
