Money's tight, so I mostly stuck to buying digital albums. I got:
-殞煞 Vengeful Spectre's self-titled
-Krukh's Чёрный свет EP
-Violet Cold's Noir Kid
-Malokarpatan's Krupinské ohne (just released today, haven't even listened to it yet)
-and I pre-ordered Yves Tumor's new album (on cassette)
The fact that any given person might point to any track on this as their favorite is another testament to its strength as an album. And yeah, that 2 hours really flies by.
A couple months ago, I was scrolling through reviews of The Last Jedi. I noticed one that was staggeringly long and kept mentioning Ingmar Bergman. I thought to myself "No way this isn't Cappie. No way this could be anyone else on this planet." And I was right! You have a very distinct voice and style.
By the way, I haven't forgotten about High Life. I'm just waiting for a time when I can watch it alone.
Thought I would end up preferring the Spectral Lore songs, but Mare's "Venus" is absolute fire! I'm going to spend a lot of my year listening to this album.
Also rewatching my top Star Trek episodes. Just finished "Similitude", my favorite episode of Enterprise. Starting TNG's "The Inner Light" again now. My absolute favorite of all the series is DS9's "The Visitor", but I've already seen that one recently.
Sisko's line in that gets me every time: "I'm no writer; but if I were, it seems to me I'd wanna poke my head up every once in a while and take a look around, see what's going on. It's life, Jake. You can miss it if you don't open your eyes."
Thanks, pal. Haven't seen Field of Dreams since I was a kid, don't remember it too well. I've read a couple of your other reviews (The Star Wars ones).
Ow my head. Just woke up at 7:30pm. I put away a bottle of whiskey last night. Looks like I punched out a couple Christmas lights on our porch. I should get sober again. Hope everyone is doing well! Have a nice weekend.
Yup. (Real name Linnea Siggelkow. Stereogum's where I found out about her.) She makes some really gorgeous dream pop. https://www.stereogum.com/2073782/ellis-embarrassing-born-again/video/
And The Fuzz was one of my favorite EPs of the decade.
Stylistically, not similar to Yves Tumor of course. I only mentioned it here because I noticed they're coming out on the same day, and I love them both.
Wow. Another great one! Also glad to have discovered Diana Gordon through this song, her vocals on this are my favorite part.
Can't believe Yves Tumor and Ellis will be dropping their albums on the same day. Those could end up being my top 2 albums of the year.
Markov Soroka, I knew that name sounded familiar! He mailed me my svrm cassette, I guess he runs Vigor Deconstruct, also home to Kaatayra. Subaqueous is indeed great, gonna check out Unsleep next.
Update: Great intro! (as always). No matter how hard I scrunch up my little brain, I can't think of anything smart to say. I'm more an "it is what it is" person than a "what if" person. I can't think about alternate histories for very long. I liked the Rebecca Onion quote.
My main take-away was that I should probably finally listen to a Metallica album. Maybe tomorrow. I'm currently getting into these Cult of Fire albums.
Haven't found time to read the intro yet. Just popping in to say the Sadness and Violet Cold songs are right up my alley. Looking forward to checking out the others.
I was late to the party on A Pregnant Light, but Broken Play is probably the best discovery I made this month. Had me clutching at invisible oranges and everything.
I think corniness has been a part of Grimes' music since (and including) Art Angels. But somehow she makes it work. She's always been capable of producing emotionally resonant songs ("Oblivion", "REALiTi", and now "Delete Forever"[which somehow feels both deep and corny]), but I like her brighter songs too, I feel like she's in on the joke when it comes to that side of her persona.
"Idoru" is probably my least favorite song on Miss Anthropocene. Feels a little too repetitive for it's length. But I still appreciate it, and I love the album overall.
The new Allie X is solid. I've only listened to it once so far. Super Sunset remains my favorite release of hers, both in terms of production and writing. The hooks on that just feel massive.
Upon first listen the production sounded thin to me... Turned out the aux cord in my car wasn't plugged in all the way! Darn aux cords.
Anyway, this rules. Probably my most anticipated album now.
Love that Karg album.
On the more depressive end of the ABM spectrum, Sadness dropped a new EP called atna, a particularly downcast, rough-edged release. Fans of unreqvited might like it. I absolutely love it, but I'm probably the biggest Sadness fan around here. (It's on bandcamp, but not spotify). Embrace the Sadness 😞👍
