Great intro, Ian. I've spent most of November seeking out metal, whether recent or from years past. I found myself rereading Michael Nelson's AOTW on Brutus's Nest last night, and the night before I spent reading his Deconstructing on Alcest's Shelter. It's a real shame we won't be getting more pieces like those from him on this site. But at least the older ones are still there for us to go back to, and I'm glad we still have the BM crew here to continue writing with that level of passion.
Thanks for the funeral doom recs last month, all. I've listened to most of them now. Just have to get to Into Coffin now, especially after Aaron's blurb up there.
Violence is still my favorite, but all 3 of these last singles have been pretty great. (I'd probably prefer she'd just go ahead and put the longer "art mixes" on the album.)
You did me a solid with that Esoteric rec. Started listening to A Pyrrhic Existence a couple weeks ago, and I'm almost finished with it now! *ba dum tss* But yeah, I've listened to it twice now, and it climbed up my list a ways after the second listen. It is quite catchy, particularly "Descent" and "Sick and Tired". That and Slow's VI - Dantalion have been hitting the funeral doom spot for me recently.
On first listen, it felt pretty front-loaded. You can't go wrong with the first half of the album. My favorites so far are Life's Too Short, Hopscotch, Save Room for Us, and Perfect Crime. I tend to like the danciest tracks the most.
Haven't listened to it yet, but you and Tom have put in enough work that I'll give it a shot tonight. 30 minutes isn't even a big commitment for a metal album!
Saw Chelsea Wolfe on Wednesday. My first sober concert. Of course the coffee I bought before the show put me under in my bank account, so I didn't exactly have a choice after that. "Sick", "Be All Things", and "Deranged for Rock & Roll" were highlights live.
Black Belt Eagle Scout tomorrow.
Darn it cappie, you can't lead with "This is not meant to be humorous," and then proceed with one of the funniest paragraphs you've written! I'm over here chuckling like a fool.
The Lighthouse was such a cool experience. But yeah, I kept wishing it was louder. It was hard to tell what Defoe and Pattinson were saying at times, for sure. Feral Mermaids would be a good band name.
I like catchy! And lumbering, psychedelic madness! As per people's recs, I've heard Evoken's Atra Mors, Samothrace's Reverence to Stone, and Mournful Congregation's The Incubus of Karma so far. (I'd probably need multiple listens to fully digest The Incubus of Karma, but length-wise it's probably a good warm-up for A Pyrrhic Existence. I think I'm ready.)
Favorite songs/moments:
-home with you: "I've never seen a hero like me in a sci fi"
-mary magdalene: the "oh you didn't hear me now" parts. Also the glitchy beat at the bridge, which reminds me of LP5-era Autechre.
-daybed: the staring-at-the-ceiling hypnotic quality of her delivery of some of my favorite lyrics on the album
-fallen alien: the whole song (but especially the verses that start with "In the blazing sun I saw you", the way she sounds almost gleefully accusatory)
-sad day: the whole song (but especially all of it)
Congrats! Month and a half since the last time I fell off the wagon. These days I just down an extra-large coffee before I go to bed and listen to 2 or 3 new metal albums every night until I feel like falling asleep.
And new fka twigs is great.
Off topic, but I've listened to Night Busses 2 and 4 so far. 2 was pretty cool, but 4 was revelatory. The mix was already playing to my tastes by incorporating "Hyperballad", "Man Next Door", and "Sex With Me", but when it segued from "Waiting for Tonight" into Robert Miles' "Children" towards the end I got chills. Pure ear-candy! The tarantula on the cover art is cute.
Your persistence pays off, rjc! I will take a listen tonight. (I feel like you might've recommended Night Bus to me before, and I forgot?)
For now, I am going back to sleep. (I actually set my alarm last night just so that I would wake up in time for the SOTD lists today.)
I considered going "How It Ended" at one point, but nothing gets my head nodding like "Days".
As for "Lammicken", the first time I ever heard that song was in an American Apparel, lol. Actually walked over to the cashier and asked her what song was playing and wrote it down on a scrap of paper. Good times.
