It started interesting, but the vocal melody/mixing is just too underwhelming. Marrying the dreamy intro to very lucid vocal mixing kind of throws the whole song in the air.
Pleasant song to hear on the background, but not groundbreaking or an instant classic in any way. Its structure is pretty traditional by today's standards.
Meh. This is on the same style that she's been doing since forever (particularly 1990-1997 and 2006-today). I feel like she hasn't really progressed as an artist, particularly in the last 10 years. "Confessions on the dance floor" (2005) was the last album I liked of hers. Her 1998-2005 years were her most artistic, the deepest in meaning. Then, she reverted back to what sells easier: sex/religion/sex/religion/....
By watching this, I feel like I've seen it already 10 times before from her. I mean, she doesn't eat meat (except salmon AFAIK), and yet, she hasn't shown anything in her art about the environment and where we're heading. Or technology. Or mysticism for that matter (rather than just "religion"). She just rehashes the same sex & religion themes over and over.
Get over it, bring back the Madonna of 1998. The one who innovated. You can still voice your opinion against the government, just do it in a more artistic way. Not the most flashy way.
The music is straight chillwave from 2009, with abrasive pop vocals on top (voice mixed way too high). This is what happens to indie, underground music movements: eventually, they find their way in ultra-commercial music as they get pop-ified.
I can't see at all the places 4-2, they just show up as an empty space on my Chrome browser (I don't have Flash anymore btw, it's been discontinued by my version of my browser). I wish there were youtube equivalents for it or other non-Flash embedding.
Nice song and video, at 0:45 sec you can see them dancing in front of TicTail's shop, featuring a large illustration by Laura Callaghan (possibly the fastest-growing illustrator today).
Not a bad song, probably better than most of the stuff they release in the last 20 years. At 2:46 min of the video, do a pause. You will see the crowd. I couldn't find anyone younger than 40 years old in it. Being a Duran Duran fan myself in the '80s, I'm also over 40 years old (43 to be exact). But that newer music they release, as much as I loved these guys back in the day, I would not bother to see them live now, playing new music. I don't feel their new music.
Absolutely love it! So much punk-style rock this year in the news, and so little atmospheric mystical electronic. Back in the 2010, we were full of such music, and now it's gone. Thank God for The Radio Dept!
Do some research first to see what I'm talking about. The style itself has specific rules that makes artworks similar, not that the artists actively and consciously steal.
I'm an indie music lover (and I despise the Bieb's music), but White Hinderland is on the wrong here. Just because two things sound similar, or even nearly the same, doesn't mean that one stole from the other. Skrillex clearly showed on his video both his thought and editing process, and it just happened to sound similar.
I'm an artist myself (collage surreal art) and there are about 500 another collage artists on instagram. If you sit down and you browse our work, you will find massive similarities, not only in the general ideas (e.g. vintage people looking out to space is very common in collage), but also in composition and overall look & feel.
That doesn't mean that we steal from each other. It just means that vintage pop collage has similar constructs where few combinations "make sense", so when different people are creating with it, they end up with the same-looking artwork.
This is way more common in pop music, where there are way more than 500 musicians in the world. It is in fact, bound to happen very often! So jumping the gun as WH did here, is a bit narrow-minded IMHO. Sure, sure, others might have made millions after suing big artists, so she might have a chance legally-speaking, but that doesn't mean that this similarity here wasn't purely coincidental.
In fact, I'd find it completely stupid for Skrillex to start "Sorry" with a riff so close to one he knows already exists. Plus, the Biebs' label had enough money to license that riff if it needed. There was absolutely no reason for Skrillex to risk "stealing". The risks outweighed the benefits.
So no, I don't believe that this riff was stolen. It is just one more case of pieces of artworks that make sense a certain way only, and so eventually ppl end up with the same ideas to solve a particular problem. Exactly because they make sense at that time. Same goes for art, for patent-ridden software (before I was a visual artist, I was a programmer), and a lot of other stuff.
Regarding the Coldplay video: the various ideas shown in the video are the same ones that collage artists have been using for the last 5 years. Do a google search on artists like myself (Eugenia Loli), Sammy Slabbinck, Joe Webb, Beth Hoeckel, Sarah Eisenhlor, Ben Giles, and many more. That style you see in that video, was lifted from our vintage collage style. The directors gave credit to some of us on their personal Vimeo page btw (so at least it was somewhat acknowledged).
Because I'm not a native English speaker, most of the time I black out the lyrics of pretty much any non-clearly-speaking song. So judging only the music on this, I don't find anything interesting in it. For me, it has no hooks at all. It's just blah-blah blah as far as I can tell. I'm not trolling btw, that's just my opinion not only on this album, but pretty much most music these days. I don't have a favorite for 2016 yet, only M83 came close with a few of his songs from the new album (because of the reverb, I don't have to listen to highly mixed singing, it blends in, making the music enjoyable for me).
I loved "boo-hoo". But this one has the vocals mixed too high up, without any reverb. It sounds weird to me because of that, too "clean" for its own good. Also, the style is close to that new wave pop from the early '80s that hasn't survived well in the decades (sounds old). The reverb would have helped that situation, making it sound as if we're revisiting that style through a distortion lens, rather than simply recreating what wasn't already hugely popular at the time.
Rihanna's video was more beautiful than any video here (color grading, cinematography etc), but I found it painfully self-indulged. What was the point of the violence and exaggerated lifestyle exactly? Same about her previous video btw, where she tortures people. I just don't identify with that style of music/videos/life.
I personally liked better the MK & Becky Hill video. I found it more fun, but it doesn't have replay value.
This is the kind of music I actually like, and I have sorely missed on Stereogum and Pitchfork in the last year or two. I dislike a lot the kind of bands that get promoted these days on Stereogum, which are either a lot of commercial pop, or punk rock bands. I want atmosphere instead.
I get what PC Music is trying to do (music that's only good for pre-teens, that at the same time feels to older people as if supposedly it has a deeper meaning below the surface). It's a good trick: humans do go for the mystery, they get enchanted trying to solve "the puzzle".
But in reality, there's no puzzle. You get what you see, and nothing more. The mystery is all an illusion. As such, I find this type of "artistry" pretty terrible. I can't listen to this for more than 10 seconds before my head explodes.
I don't understand why you've been downvoted. This is indeed plain pop music, and it's not atmosphere-building/parallel universe-unveiling as some of her previous songs. I'm personally again disappointed, because ALL of the 2009-2011 artists that gave us huge atmospheric music (e.g. How to dress well, washed out, memory tapes etc), their subsequent music was just BLAH.
Exactly my thoughts too. I heard the new song, and it's just pop. It's rather good pop, but it's still pop. Nothing awesomely otherworldy as her previous record.
I don't personally like this. This is plain pop to me. We've heard that kind of music from others before. Grimes was fresh when she was making music that was extremely otherworldy. It had a strong atmosphere, it kinda made you feel high, without having to smoke anything. It was music from another dimension (especially "Be a body"). This... this is pop. Better pop than most out there, but still pop. Nothing new to me. Nothing that takes me high in any way.
I would not speak of "rip off". As a fellow artist (in the graphics field), similarities are inevitable among artists, especially in our time, where everyone and their dog has released online some form of art, and the market is saturated with it.
Now, regarding the song itself, I find it to be old style. Indie pop from 2006. Nothing new and exciting and corner-turning to really to capture my attention.
I'm Greek and I love seeing one good Greek band finally making interesting music. Unfortunately, while this track is still a thousand times better than the rest of the Greek music, it's a bit too abstract to stand out. The track is not as strong as it should be to make waves internationally. Their original songs from a few years ago had more interesting arrangements and undeniable hooks.
Love it! This is the kind of music I like and unfortunately there's not many big new names making such music anymore. It's just the old timers (from 2009 onwards that is). Glad to see some new blood on that genre.
She actually fell very gracefully, especially considering her high heels. Good reflexes on her part putting her left leg on the step below her too, to soften the fall. Any other woman, even 15 years younger than her, would have probably broken something. Extra points for her: the video showed that she was singing live too (since there was no singing when she fell, apart from backup vocals).
