Most of the songs are good and some are great, but two of the singles(7 rings and Break Up) are early frontrunners for worst pop songs of the year for me, and drag the album down to the point I'd say it's a bad album despite liking every other song.
does anyone find it disconcerting for someone whose biggest hit is a song about the commodification of black people and culture to be very literally turned into a commodity?
also, coming from someone who is in the this album is pretty bad(especially the last two singles) camp, even if you don't like a lot of modern teen pop stuff you don't have to be a complete anti-pop dick about it. It's pretty easy to say "I don't enjoy a lot of modern pop songwriting trends and production. I find it can be dull and repetitive," without having to make broad statements about a whole type of music and audience.
I wonder if part of the increased restraints and expectations had to do with how long the wait between albums has been. She's been with them for so long Im wondering why things changed or if they were always like this to her.
I don't really love the band tbh, but I liked the last PATD video you picked. However, this PATD video was lame. Well made, but like the least fun way to use that "we can make someone walk up a wall" effect.
Something talk me into liking Empress Of. I've tried getting into her first album a few times and I don't mind it and do think it's definitely well made, but nothing ever grabs me. I don't ever feel a lot of personality of anything to hook me, just pretty well crafted modern indie pop music that kinda goes in one ear and out the other.
I still enjoy her music and will probably continue too, but is anyone really surprised that someone raised in privilege(at least from what I know) and whose never suffered the effects of being lower class might abandon their ideals at the drop of the hat?
I'm glad they're counteracting the criticism of "maybe don't have a bunch of straight men write your bisexual women song" with a vaguely leering video directed by *checks credits* another straight dude!
I know PT makes fun of drakes sick producer and possible kid, but i think the meanest part is him making fun of drake's dad for wearing Steve Harvey suits.
I definitely would be into some sort've long form article or something about the creative relationship between Donald Glover and Hiro Murai if you guys wanna make that
So, this is an utter shit show for Kanye, and it should be, but I have one question:
Does T.I. end up looking good for doing this? On one hand, he comes off sounding way smarter and more empathetic. On the other hand, the best move may have been to just say no to Kanye. Don't feed into his bullshit.
I like imagining someone listening to Garden of Delete and going "Usher would sound great on this" almost as much as i like imagining how great Usher would sound on Garden of Delete
way too many people in my class went to Coachella last weekend(art majors have rich parents, who knew) and yeah, their excitement about it was so weirdly lifeless. Also, more than a few of them literally just saw Beyonce, and maybe Tyler, and then spent the rest of the weekend wandering around high on something or another. Coachella would 10 times better it seems if the people putting it on and the people going to it weren't the worst
This isn't just the Taylor Swift video I'm complaining about but I really get bugged by stuff where the narrative is "rich and famous person whose life has been entirely built around achieving and maintaining being rich and famous deep down really just wants to be regular and not famous. Being famous and/or rich can be really tough you guys!"
Look, I can understand respecting the music video for "Look What You Made Me Do" despite the song being trash, but the "End Game" video is like a crash course in how to do nothing with a huge budget. and on how to overuse lens flares.
