do yourself a favor: put some headphones on, and play head down. that should erase all butt rock thoughts from your head.
1: slaves and bulldozers 2: beyond the wheel 3: searching with my good eye closed 4: gun 5: head down 6: nothing to say 7: 4th of july 8: jesus christ pose 9: mind riot 10: room a thousand years wide hon mention: their cover of devo's "girl u want" is fucking amazing. but in all honesty, unless slaves and bulldozers is on that list i can't take it seriously. and nothing from ultramega ok? no beyond the wheel? that song is like a fucking wrecking ball.
the album that keeps on giving, even two years later.
oh, and the irony of the sheep metaphor on the front of a shirt being sold at forever 21 on the front didn't get by me.
if you don't give a fuck about t-shirts, then why did you license minor threat shirts through forever 21 for $30? that's your solution to bootlegged t-shirts, of all things to get pissed about? after decades of this? jesus, i guess sooner or later they all need the money.
that sxsw "show" killed this band for me.
a loss. plain and simple. most people know his songs and they don't know they do. they know after midnight by eric clapton, but they don't know the slow, sexy heat that was the original by this man. i can't tell you how many hot nights in the south i've put on troubadour, or okie, or any of his albums and just existed. because that's what his music let you do: exist. it was so simple, and laid back, and perfect. jj cale is a weird portion of music: he's the guy that other people got famous for doing his songs, and they don't know he exists for the most part. AND HE LOVED IT THAT WAY. he never made it his ambition to be mega famous or rich. he just loved playing his songs. he's even more velvet underground than the velvet underground. those that listened to him were already in famous bands, and they all flocked to him to see what he was doing. this is a loss. i'll never forget the first time i heard him. it was halloween night in charleston, s.c., many many years ago. his sly voice came up over his music, an instantly i was hooked. he was heartbroken, a heartbreaker, sexy, lost, found, and every thing in between. this really hit me. i've been a huge fan of jj's. if you've never heard his version of after midnight, if you only know the eric clapton version, listen to his. it's hot, full of sweat, and slooooow. it's what it's like after midnight. his input in the 70's is virtually flawless. from naturally on into shades, there's not one clunker. not one. and it all sounds so effortless. because it was for him. his talent did us a service. good night, mr. cale.
you should do a toro y moi songs next.
that's pretty much what i got from this list.
WHERE'S MUMFORD AND SONS?!
what are your feelings on the strokes?
get anything in return, it's a blast. i love that guy.
yeah, it's funny, he got kicked out of nirvana for being too metal and kicked out of soundgarden for being too punk rock-y. he got crushed by two tons of irony.
finally. now to start voting for song of the fall.
metallica should set this to music.
man, i like this song and defriended. good stuff.
are you kidding me? i think it's incredible lcd soundsystem even made the list.
i was thinking it sounds just like it came off of trompe le monde. i mean, like RIGHT where they left off. 'course, don't mean shit without kim.
dude, great call, those two songs work terrific together.
no, the list is great. mambo sun just happens to be my favorite. it's so goddamn sexy, i'm a heterosexual male and i find myself throwing my underwear at my stereo. it's way worse when i'm driving.
funny....i can't seem to find mambo sun on that list anywhere...
i feel like this should get more recognition.
wake me when he quotes dishwalla.
i've written two different responses to this and every time i've submitted them they just disappear. is this something wrong with the site? or is this just me?
okay, well let me explain what i mean. first, i applaud you for making this list, it's a toughy, and i recognize there is no way you'd be able to please everyone all the time with it. it's fucking impossible. so i'm not going to criticize the list for that. but come on, some of these picks are straight out of the rotation of tampa's classic rock lunch hour. another brick part 2? money? you said yourself that you don't even know if this is really your favorites list, but look at what you decided to go with. 90% of it can be heard in regular rotation on the radio. you can't tell me another brick in the wall part 2 deserves to be on that list while fearless, a FAR superior song to virtually every song on here is left off. money is on there but the next song on dark side, EASILY the best song on that album, us and them, doesn't make the cut. comfortably numb? while good, any number of songs off of the wall would be better picks: mother, goodbye blue sky, run like hell, etc. none of the songs you picked are bad, but they cover the same ground that lazy classic rock computers pick out every day, and they cover the same four albums starting from dark side and ending with the wall. this is one era out of many that they had, and it's the one everyone knows to death. even picking echoes and shine on, two POWERHOUSE songs that i agree with, is fairly predictable. echoes of course would go on there, simply because of it's sheer bombastity. fearless, one of these days, careful with that axe eugene, stay, childhood's end, the nile song, mother, us and them, brain damage, welcome to the machine (a song so stunning and utterly full of bile that i sometimes can't believe they got it onto the album), all of these have places over the songs selected. or not, but at least they're not on the radio. also, look. i quite smoking two days ago, and this shit sucks. i don't know what to do with my hands at all and i'm eating like a horse. nothing is safe, i'm one step away from pouring garlic powder down my throat. this is awful.
allow me to explain: this list was a beast, i applaud you for trying. but do you really consider some of these songs their absolute best? i know in the article you wrote "these may not even be my picks for the best pink floyd songs", and yet the ones you picked are the ones that everyone is uber-familiar with. you can't possibly put another brick part 2 seriously as one of their best even from that album. 95% of the songs on that list are being played on classic rock stations as we speak, and you culled your list from basically four albums, from a band who've put out almost 20. don't get me wrong, i think a list of this undertaking is hard, and NOBODY is going to please everybody, but this list is fairly safe. wish you were here, another brick part 2, comfortably numb, money?!, i mean, you gotta admit the list is really classic rocks radio-y. there's no fucking way money goes on there but us and them doesn't. there's no way comfortably numb goes on there but fearless doesn't. or one of these days. or mother. also, this was mentioned somewhere else on the list, but nothing from obscured by clouds? or really anything with syd barrett? nothing from atom heart mother? fat old sun is one of the best guitar parts david gilmoure ever wrote. i'm glad echoes and shine on made the list, but come on, those are really easy calls too. echoes simply for the sheer bombasity of it. if you want to shake the classic rock radioness off of it, there are tons of other calls that could have gone on here, but another brick in the wall part 2, a song that deaf people could sing in their sleep thanks to it being overplayed, got put on there. i'm really not trying to insult you or anything, i think dogs, echoes, astronomy, even wish you were here, and shine, those are great songs and deserve consideration and placement, but money? that album is incredible and you picked the one song on there that does NOT need to anywhere near a best of pink floyd list, especially considering the very next song is the BEST song on that album. anyway, sorry, i quit smoking two days ago and that's the reason i wrote all this shit out like that. it's like there are dogs barking and i'm the only one that can hear them. i've been eating like a horse and i don't know what to do with my hands anymore.
yes. fearless to me may well be their best song. it's fucking incredible.
i can't upvote this enough. it's my favorite.
i feel like this list was put together by corporate at a classic rock radio station in florida.
yeah, they've been in chicago recording with him for months now. they're in the mixing stages. i'm just surprised it wasn't brought up at all. i mean, the entire thing was about a non-existent wilco album and their tour with dylan.
not one mention of him producing white denim's new album?
ugh, did you not see the guy above you post the same thing? come on people.
or black gallagher, but from what i understand, he may have warrants.
dude, come on, that's not even original.
she may not have written as many songs, or whatever, but it was her personality in those songs that helped define who they were. she was just as much responsible for their sound as any of them, if not more so. do you think gigantic will sound the same without kim deal? where is my mind? i personally think that no one in that band is despensable, but she is every bit as important as frank black is. this shouldn't be happening without her, because nobody can take her place. it's impossible.
there shouldn't be anymore without kim deal.
