Same pol. leaning...but I like Conor Oberst better when he has interesting things to say
Daft Punk?!?! Why isn't Phoenix headlining every night?
I'd go but 2 Chainz is there. Also, Phoenix has no business being bigger than Sigur Ros, Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, or even the Postal Service. All in all, awesome lineup. Being thousands of miles away isn't awesome though.
What's the relationship b/w the two bands? Or is there something I'm missing? ...cause aside from both bands putting out awesome sophomore albums I can't see much in common.
Awesome. This was awesome. Foxygen is awesome. FIDLAR is awesome. Esben & the Witch...awesome. Ra Ra Riot is good and The Joy Formidable still formidable. First awesome week of music in 2013. Awesome.
Saying that a "large critic site should be consistent in their endorsement or objections to a band...etc." seems like saying "everyone who works at this publication should think the same way about the same music" or "the same writer should continue to review the same band." I don't really think that either is a good thing. Though I understand the point that these writers represent the larger entity of the site they publish for, I like the idea of the author/critic having as much autonomy as he/she can. Ian Cohen shouldn't be kicked off the Free Energy assignment b/c he has a different opinion than the reviewer of Stuck On Nothing. Nor should he be told he needs to give it a certain rating, good or band. I agree that there is something valuable to consistency, but I think that it's best for critic sites that there be a variety of opinion even at the sake of consistency (not saying P4K is the best at that by any means.) Also, you must be reading different blogs than me. I guess I only check Stereogum with any frequency, but I never "hear people stand up for Pitchfork." I'm happy to be a bit of an apologist for Pitchfork simply because people rag on it sooooo much. I think P4K is a decent site, and I find a lot of good music there. It certainly has its faults, but good lord people attack it like crazy. I guess there's some value, on a political level, in attacking the dominating institutions in an industry... Also, I know I'm not gonna get much love for this, but Ian Cohen is not a monster. This comment section is livid. I can't detect anything in his writing that's particularly bitter, snobbish, or tasteless. He can be very critical at times...but he's a critic. Critics shouldn't be afraid to say what they will because it's going to hurt somebody's feelings or get the readership in an uproar.
Also, a 5.2 by my standards is above average by 0.2 so this guy should be celebrating!
I wouldn't be surprised if Pitchfork gave this Best New Track
I don't know. I just don't hear anything interesting going on in his songs. I'll keep trying though!
Challenge accepted. I will watch every single act.
Ian Cohen didn't write the review for Stuck on Nothing
So...how does Future sound better than everyone else who does the same thing?
I really want to like this record. I can tell that it's fun, well written, and groovy, but there's just something about it that falls flat for me. I like that rock music still exists that doesn't deal with "heavy themes." I guess, though, there's nothing about Free Energy for me to hang onto. I feel like all these songs have been written thousands of times before. The only one I can hear myself going back to is "Street Survivor."
Like I said, I bet Carly Rae Jepsen doing "All My Friends" would actually be pretty sweet
I bet Carly Rae Jepsen doing "All My Friends" would actually be pretty sweet.
This just in: There's a correct way to feel sad!
Gosh, these are the best comments I've ever read anywhere ever! Here's to hoping I can live up to their greatness in 2013! I'm going to try, Stereogum, hehe. I make no bones about it ;)
Why are people on the electronic music scene so damn picky about what classifies as a certain type of music? Yeesh.
The world must hate Sigur Ros these days :(
I didn't read any of the article and now I'm commenting on it.
no, P!nk is da best dis week ;) !!
There were so many high profile albums released this week...and grizzly bear deserves every inch of this win
Then you wouldn't play a gig with her, simple as that. I wouldn't either, but I don't see why people are upset. She's not enslaving people. They are volunteers so they're obviously going to be fine playing music with her without being compensated. Otherwise they wouldn't. If Palmer and the musicians are both cool with the agreement, then what do the rest of us care?
Do any of the more recent albums count? Because Together Through Life hasn't gotten as much love as Modern Times or this new one and Together Through Life is amazing. On that note, I think the variety of options people have with Dylan is really cool. I don't think there's much in his discography that i would scoff at if someone claimed it as a favorite. Here's to hoping for 20 more years!
Yeah, they really fucked it up. Should have gotten an honest rating, like 4.5 stars, but noooooo. They had to be all corporate.
Radiohead can suck it. I want to hear more of this genius. Love it.
Ah c'mon man. I'm (admittedly) a loser because I only know a few animal collective songs. Not anymore. I'm glad about this list because I'm quickly turning into a huge fan, which is something that didn't happen with only MPP stuff hanging around on my ipod.
And really, Tom's comment that implies Wonder might be a "homophobic dickbag" seems more hate filled than anything in Wonder's quote. Not only is it awful to wonder, but the very phrasing reveals a linguistically inscribed homophobia. If being a dickbag is a bad thing, then I imagine liking dicks is a bad thing, then i imagine gay people are a bad thing, then i am a homophobic dickbag...oh wait...
Not necessarily true. I thought about the same thing, that is, inserting "straight" for "gay" and ended with the opposite conclusion. A lot of straight people are confused about their sexuality and I don't see how it is in anyway patronizing to say that.. Also, more generally, this whole thing really seems like toe stepping. No one can say anything now without it being considered some sort of prejudice or hate. People crusade against the craziest shit. Wonder's comments, if one considers them homophobic, are still way done the list of homophobic problems in this world.
Reminds me of The Zombies...good thing.
Why hate on the new material. The Whole Love is phenomenal. "Art of Almost" and "One Sunday Morning" both deserve to make this top ten.
Love it. I think lyrically speaking it might be the best album these ears have tuned in to. Although, Lifted might have some competition in this regard, it's all in the Bright Eyes catalog. And it's fitting that it's turning 10. After a decade of relatively angst-less music, Conor Oberst is returning to his punk band. There's a lot he can do to remind us that "emo" doesn't have to be "suck ass mo"
Well, my identity and something I work hard to create in a public sphere are two different things. If I made a song that wasn't about genital warts, but some group used it in a genital warts commercial without my consent I wouldn't give a flying fuck. But if they used my face or name or information I would, because that's a matter of privacy, not copy. So I guess I want "control of my likeness" but not control over "everything I work hard to create" I'm a musician and everything I record is free. (but I won't post a link because then I'll get so many downvotes I'll surely be crying myself to sleep.) I understand that the Beastie Boys are pros though, and that they make their living on music. Somehow I doubt they're struggling for cash...
a lot like cake, that's all i can think about! I like Cake though. And cake.
I doubt anyone's going to agree, but I'm of the opinion that it's The Beastie Boys that are being the jerkoffs here. I just don't understand why there has to be so much licensing and agreeing and blah blah blah. It's music. It should be out in a public space for everyone to enjoy and use however they want: to sell drinks, promote a campaign, play at a high school football game, whatever. I understand that Monster is part of a money grabbing corporation, but I don't see how the BB are any different in this. So someone wants to use your music, so what? I wish more music was public domain and free and populist. But maybe I'm a damn red :P or missing the point.
Stop that, Nick. You're breaking my heart.
The intention of the song is not in the song itself. It's a great song even if it is a joke. Great jokes exist.
