Agreed. I was also in the category of "hip hop" isn't real music, so glad I can appreciate varied music now.
I feel like Kanye is becoming the new Radiohead in that he can be expected to top almost every list, whether people like it or not.
This write up is way more annoying than the video.
Saw this quote on youtube and made me totally rethink this video, which I originally thought of as awful: "This video presents some of the most stereotypical, if not corny American stereotypes. The desert. The galloping stallions. The beautiful woman. The soft porn. The lone ranger riding his motorcycle into the sunset. And it is all presented in such a simple and uninspiring way that it is almost a mockery of these things. The only thing not stereotypically American here, is the fact that the lone ranger is black. So why is Kanye doing this? Well it is pretty simple, he is taking White American culture, and he is replacing it with a black skin head. This is essentially an aggressive cultural takeover that the average person probably doesn't even realise is happening. Why else would he debut the video on the Ellen show? It is a white American talk show, with a white American demographic. This man is literally destroying white American stereotypes by making them revolve around him. The funniest part is, hardly anyone realises it. Oh and who is White America's favourite 'white' person? Jesus. I'm sure you all get where I'm going with this." Either Kanye's a fucking genius or just unbelievably cheesy...or both.
Definitely Graceland, one of the greatest songs ever written period.
Agree with number one... all I'm going to say
Awww I was hoping it was going to be like Dinosaur Jr.'s "remix" and would just be completely different cover.
Hell yes, buying tickets today! Would not have seen this if it weren't for stereogum
I feel that too much of this write up was centered on attacking the idea of Tyler The Creator. Like he's not fulfilling some sort of fantasy you have of him. I'm not a huge fan, but I find some of his work really interesting and don't really listen to him for lyrical insight. I think this was much better than Goblin and there are at least five songs which I will definitely be going back to, which as a previous person put it is all I'm really looking forward in an album like this.
Ohhhhh. I happened to get a new computer the day they changed that, so I thought my computer was just having like a formatting issue and was incredibly annoyed.
Yes! What Ever Happened is definitely in my top three.
What about the song IS THIS IT?? I feel like that track encompasses what The Strokes are.
I like to keep the reader guessing
1. Night on the Sun 2. Talking Shit About A Pretty Sunset 3. Teeth Like God's Shoeshine 4. Breakthrough 5. Dramamine 6. Trailer Trash 7. Other People's Lives 8. Doin' the Cockroach 9. Bankrupt On Selling 10. 3rd Planet It's truly sad how much time I spent working on this, but this whole thing has just reminded me how fucking amazing Modest Mouse is. Also t
Wow really? God everyone's so uptight, I actually thought Tom was really funny in this write up. Domo 23 sounds like another Rella, so it's not really my thing. Bimmer sounds really great though and I hope there's more of that kind of stuff on the album.
Hmm I'll definitely give it a listen! I've listened to loveless many times, because of all the crazy hype there is around it and it just never clicked. Which is odd because I totally dig shoe gaze type stuff.
Ughhh I wish I was into MBV 'cause if I was this would be super exciting
Frank Ocean knowing kung fu makes this ten times more interesting to me
I'm not even that big of a Dinosaur Jr. fan but c'mon really The fucking Lumineers have a larger font?
Something about airplanes. Fuck yeah bellingham!
Thank you! I was actually just about to say that. Generally I don't mind pitchfork and find it useful in terms of learning about new music, but God they piss me off when they just decide that an album deserves an absurdly low number of stars and can't even properly justify it. Now because of their stupid review many people are going to pass on the album and it might have been something that very well enjoyed.
Ughh I'm getting the gross feeling that since so many people loved and ranted over the Frank Ocean album when it came out, it's now "cool" to not talk about it/and generally pretend it didn't happen.
The only "outrage" is in this list is the absence of Heroin. But hey at least you guys didn't miss Pale Blue Eyes or Candy Says. So cheers!
I kinda don't like how this lists just skips off his last couple albums. I mean Happiness and Somebody that I used to know are just outstanding. Also I don't understand how Say Yes isn't on here, regardless of its popularity.
Wow, you summed up my feelings for both artists better than I've been able to.
This is just really fucking good music. Genre, sexual preference, previous albums aside this is just a super stellar album. I honestly thought he was pretty good but over hyped after Nostalgia, Ultra. This album definitely has staying power every song is unique but works in its own way. Hate to join the supposed "bandwagon" but I have to say this is the best album of the year (so far).
Are you saying headbands are gay?
Uhh well don't panic is still a pretty good song...
Jesus Christ people are so critical, I didn't think it was that bad
Hahaha "Snoop Dogg of indie music", so true
I never got to see them live!!
Huh, I never knew TGI Fridays had such a following here on stereogum
I hate you so much and I don't even know you.
This deserves to be comment of the week
So what, just because Wayne Coyne likes Ke$ha is she certified indie cool now? I'm sorry but her music still is terrible, even if she does an occasion collaboration with the Flaming Lips. If you ever forget just take a nice visit to youtube and re-watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iP6XpLQM2Cs
I hope Jesus plays from his old stuff. His last couple albums were too radio friendly.
Wow, I 100% agree with everything you just said.
