man i have no idea how to reconcile the thoughtful, sensitive person Kozelek is on record with the guy on stage. has he never heard his own songs before?
check out Guantanamo Baywatch, La Luz and Sick Hyenas, among others. there's a lot of good new surf/garage.
"... these are timeless, triumphant pop songs, singles that will endure through the ages. They’re in the canon now, and they deserve to be." lol
every year, everyone's lists are the same ten albums in slightly different orders. yay
the indie sites have turned into pop sites and what we have left is a lot of garbage floating around the web. the first wave of big music blogs have long-since crested and it's time for some new online voices and places to discover actual underground music. until then, thank god for local music scenes.
Stop mansplaining the holidays to me, Mark. Christmastime is no time for the language of abuse.
pretty sure janet weiss said wild flag was over already
Hey look, this is actually about music. I was one more Ariel Pink/War on Drugs/Grimes/Madonna/ Mark Kozelek/Perfect Pussy gossip story away from never visiting this site again, and then you totally redeem yourselves with something worth reading.
the tape resurgence is driven by local DIY music scenes – cheap and easy to make and they fit in your pocket at a show.
I just want to meet the person who listens to both Tame Impala and Pablo Ruiz.
I mean, to be fair, Chvrches, Haim and Vampire Weekend is fucking Disney music.
Pretty sure it'd be impossible not have a label pulling the strings when yr first single is associated with Michael Angelakos, Benny Blanco and Cashmere Cat.
Seriously enough of these celebrity crowd-funding projects. Only suckers give money to a multimillionaire with the industry connections (both Hollywood or indie) that could make this happen with traditional financing.
agreed. he's talented but he's made some of my least favorite albums by some of my previously favorite artists ... Beck, James Mercer, etc.
Tears in Heaven 2k14 haha
agreed, it's making me nervous to stereogum at work right now
Lil Debbie is about as nimble behind the mic as Kreayshawn
Can't like this enough
awesome, nice to see long-form journalism on Stereogum. Excited to see more of this.
brain fart, er I should have said Milk Music, but Magic Milk is a great band as well.
People's lists are basically the same 10-20 albums in slightly different orders. It's like no other music came out this year. Also I don't know why, but I love Sonny & the Sunsets new album more than just about anything I've heard this year, new or old. What a weird little record. Second favorite is probably The Liminanas. Also Thee Oh Sees fucking killed it with Floating Coffin, and the new Magic Milk and The Men records are awesome as well.
Haim's acclaim makes me feel like I'm living on another planet. Their album is awkward, it's slick without being accomplished, the singing is glottal and herky-jerky. The songs sound cobbled together, like they took a verse from one song and smashed it into a chorus from another. Listening to their music is like seeing a gawky teen dance at a wedding.
Ah, so because some prisoners are lost causes, it's pointless to try and help the other ones. I get it.
You're missing the point. Rapists do not go away for life. They get released, eventually. I'd rather have a rehabilitated rapist than a repeat offender.
You realize that if music helps rehabilitate a convict, that helps all of society and not just the convict, right? jesus.
Does he even contribute a single verse in Started From the Bottom? It's pretty much him half-singing the hook for four minutes. I'm sure there's gotta be a Drake song out there you could have referenced other than that one to make me look ignorant. Drake sucks, he can't sing, he can't rap. The bought beats are his only saving grace.
I don't know why people insist on calling Drake a rapper. I'm still waiting for him to rap.
I dunno, I skip "Sprawl I" everytime and "Sprawl II"is still pretty breathtaking. ... and I think there's better ways to express the meandering, superfluous qualities of the suburbs other than bad songs. I think the Suburbs would have made a great 10-song album. As it is, I still like it, but it's my least favorite Arcade Fire record, if I had to chose.
I'd ditch "Sprawl I," "Rococo," "Half Light I," "Half Light II" and "The Suburbs (continued)."
agreed. They could have cut probably six songs from The Suburbs.
