So, #-1. Baths - Ocean Death
#0 Röyksopp & Robyn - Do It Again
I'm not a Lekman fan, so I only came here to see if "The Opposite of Hallelujah" was the #1. Now that everything is fine in the Universe, we can enjoy the other good songs of Jens Lekman
At the end, all I can say is The Menzingers video is awesome, and if it wasn't thanks to this list, I never had watched it. But come on, the tUnE-yArDs video is veeery good and better than at least three of the choices here.
In this right moment, I've only watched the Duck Sauce video. If the other 4 videos are better than the tUnE-yArDs and Dum Dum Girls videos, this week was the bomb!
Parklife turns 20 and I still lose control when incidentally I listen "Girls & Boys" on radio, a party, wherever. Reminds me the school years and the best college parties. Also, "This is a Low" has been my all time Blur favourite, and the one that sticked me to Blur for a long time. Parklife surprised me with the well balance between irony, empathy and excellent music. Thanks a lot, Ryan, this was an amazing piece.
Maybe people think the "Hello Kitty" video is racist because Lavigne involves japanese culture in such garbage song and video. I feel offended and I'm not japanese! WSOTY (yes, Worst Song of the Year).
#2 and #3 are maybe the best. I'm so tired of "Bittersweet Symphony", that I try to listen it the least. "Sonnet" is one of my favorites. Well, Urban Hymns is amazing, so if this list were composed by 5 songs from that album, it would be totally normal to me.
Is bad that after watching this video now i think Sky Ferreira is hot? So I think it was veeery fine.
Wow. Great work. Not a Van fan, but now I'm curious about his discography.
And the chase of the unicorn in Neighbors' "Last of a Kind"? Ok, the videos this week were very good.
Easy: MILEY CYRUS. She did it so well last time...
Sorry, but I can't stand the Puff Daddy video. He rappin' gangsta is the most fake attempt to be cool in 2014.
I think that's true. The Cloud Nothings video was funnier and better that some videos here (all of them but "Tolerated").
I suffer the same strange affinity. "Lounge Act" is my favorite moment of the album.
I prefer Salad Days this week, and even that S.Carey release. And that Pure X album... I wasn't expecting a new album so soon, after the great Crawling Up the Stairs. I wanna listen it now!
In the right moment I read "The 10 best Joy Division Songs", I just smelled all the fight in the comments. But it's impossible to argue what is the best song of this band when you make so few, but almost perfect records. Maybe "She's Lost Control" is a personal favorite just because it was the one which introduced me to the band, and I still find it awesome and fun. It's not on the list and I don't have any problem with that. "Love Will Tear Us Apart" doesn't need to be #1. Less if you listen the rest of songs here. I've always consider "Dead Souls" one of the best JD songs. It's really special in the band's catalogue. So, I'm fine with this #1. I miss "Day of the Lords", "Atrocity Exhibition" and "Isolation" (specially "Isolation"!) here, but great work. Every chance to remember the amazing music of Joy Division is welcome.
This is the first time I can say that I agree with the order of the Best Songs of the Week, and song to song the music turns from good to simply awesome. I listened "A Little God in my Hands" and thought "Jesus! That song is overwhelming! It's impossible there's a better song in the whole year." Then, I listened "3Jane"...
I still think the Pains of Being Pure at Heart video is incredibly magic in all its absurdity and goofiness... but it was kinda clear that "Move On" was going to be the Video of the Week.
As a colombian, I feel kinda proud that Bomba Estéreo be part of the Lollapalooza lineup. On the other hand: why Bomba Estéreo is part of this boring lineup?
"2011′s On The Water, which may actually be a better album than Singles, could’ve turned them into festival mainstays just as easily, but it didn’t happen for whatever reason." Something awesome about this review is that I can agree with most of the opinions Tom has about Singles, but that last one about On the Water is an idea that has two years on my head. I hope that some of those who are now interested in Future Islands for this good album, their shows in festivals, the Letterman meme, etc., also give a try to On the Water. You can't be dissapointed, because that record has amazing songs that I've been singing for a long time.
Exactly! Every time I listen that song, it gives the chills, and I wanna play it again. "Fall from Grace" contains all the magic of Harring's voice, that the other tracks in Singles lacks a little, comparing it to the last two albums, in my humble opinion.
Hey, good one, Mr. Bar Food. This songs deserved a disturbing, kinda sweet video like this.
Really. If this album can be better than "Lost in the Dream" to someone, I need to listen that thing. Since The War on Drugs got the Premature Evaluation treatment, I was swearing that Perfect Pussy' "Say Yes to Love" was the Stereogum Album of the Week. But it's nice there's so much awesome music in the same week.
This is an album that grows on me everytime I listen to it, and one of my Sufjan's favorites. Thanks to the first paragraph I just realized there was no "You Are Free turns 10". Am I a little freak with this or the Cat Power album doesn't deserve that Stereogum recognition?
I'm confused! "Eyes to the Wind" was my favorite three days ago. Before it was "Under the Pressure", and before that, my favorite was "An Ocean Between the Waves". Now I'm discovering the delights of "Disappearing".
Reading this amazing piece was amazing. Thank you, Mr. Leas. An album so mature really requires to know how The War on Drugs works. The other thing that is amazing too is to see how many Stereogum readers, as me, think "Lost in a Dream" is the album of the year, IN MARCH. Is there any real chance we have another album as good, or even better than "Lost in a Dream"?
I mean "hard work", no "hard week".
This week, I think there's no better album than Tomorrow Hits (try to understand that amazing The War on Drugs album, in "real world", has not been released yet), and I'm happy The Men gets some extra attention, because this is that kind of band which doesn't make mistakes. With a discography like that, it's really hard week to recognize which one is their better album.
Now I know why everybody's talking about "Lost in a Dream". Maaaaaaan! That allbum is epic, and that's from the beginning: "Under the Pressure" is the best opening track in a long time. What is the plan between Kurt Vile and The War on Drugs' Adam Granduciel? To make the most amazing albums of these years in a row? Was this planned years ago?
I'm in the same dilemma. I wanted to hate it but I can't.
And the EMA video, "So Blonde", with the digital street workers? And the ScHoolboy Q video, "Break the Bank" with Q playing piano and his daughter in a tutu? On the other hand: "If I Could Change Your Mind" is simply hot. I thought those girls were gorgeous, but after that, woof woof woof.
A new Pains of Being Pure At Heart song? and I didn't notice it until today? And it´s amazing? Man, I wasn't sure days ago, but since now 2014 is officially awesome.
Sea Change better than Odelay? WRONG WRONG WRONG LIST.
#1 Seven Nation Army? Better than "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground"? Even better than "The Hardest Button to Button", which it's not mentioned here? The list contains some of the best White Stripes songs, but forgets all those simple jewels, like "The Union Forever", "Hipnotize", "Offend in Everyway", etc., etc.
Nice article, man. That's what I want for my friday!
90's Funk Beck and I thank you.
I love the fact that you consider MIdnite Vultures one of his best albums, even when you call it MIDNIGHT Vultures. Yes, it's one of my favorites, and that's the reason I can be a little nerdy about its name.
I don't know if Kevin Drew's "Good Sex" video is form this week, but THAT was my #1 video these days. Well played, Kevin Drew!
I was going to say the same, but DID YOU HEAR "KEROSENE GIRL"? Man, Right now I'm expecting the whole album. So, "Little Fang" is my #2 song of the week.
