Another entry in Stereogum's "it's stupid...but good...but bad...but I like it...but unnecessary...but entertaining...but terrible..." attempts to serve multiple masters. Like something or don't, just have some integrity in your conviction, jeez.
OMG 95º AND 97º HOW DID THEY SURVIVE?!!! Pretty sure those laptops don't melt at literally every music festival held in the south, Texas, southwest...
Oh man, I glad somebody at Stereogum was able to really think it through and generate some positive coverage of LCD Soundsystem.
I guess it's worth mentioning Morrissey on The Tonight Show, w/ Bill Cosby as host. Cos peppered his monolog w/ Moz' name every few sentences bc the crowd was full of screaming worshippers. He did 'Sing Your Life' and 'There's A Place In Hell For Me and My Friends.' Also The Lemonheads on Conan singing 'Big Gay Heart,' Dando sings "I don't need you to duck my sick to make me feel good about myself." It was a moment fraught with tension.
Yep, major label bands were on tv then as now, and those of us who were alive remember it. Cool story bro.
I worked in a suburban mall record store during that time. There's no mystery, and I am quite sure, that this record was popular because of Enigma. The 3 years between 'Sadeness pt. 1' and this record is basically the amount of time it took for our parents to discover the song. Case closed.
" And since Frank’s widow Gail Zappa, who controlled the trust, died last year. And Dweezil tells The New York Times that his brother Ahmet Zappa has now denied him the use of the Zappa Plays Zappa name, and he also won’t let him sell any merchandise with Frank’s image." Was this article dictated by a teenage girl?
I don't understand what this has to do with Drake.
Update: STP just tweeted that this rumor is false.
This is the result of the Blurred Lines lawsuit.
Why is Stereogum calling this out as bad after SXSW has corrected and apologized for it?
"We're really sorry about that half-assed promotion we gave Cee-Lo just the other day, but don't worry, we'll make up for it. Please don't be mad at us."
Indie-ish media is obsessed with Top40 bruh! Get on board!! But like, pretend you're kinda not on board. That's how you get clicks yo.
The fact that you initially approached speaking on gay anthems and the lesbian community with the utmost respect by seeking the approval of gay Stereogum commenters before making your post was very thoughtful. The post also may create discourse in a demographic that could otherwise easily ignore the issues the gay anthems movement is fighting against, forcing them to look inwardly to a certain degree and interact with problems that are not their own.
Frankly I don't care about the secondary market. Scalpers have a right to sell the tickets they get, as much as that might suck at times. What I think is wrong is: 1. the broker owning the secondary outlet 2. the venue/artist/management reserving tickets specifically for the secondary market 3. using bots to buy tickets I do believe Congress could do something about 1-3.
Looks more like a Dirty Projectors cover amirite
It's also an Erasure lyric from 20 years ago. I think it's a British thing.
It shouldn't, I know, but it does. In a single move the band unravels some of its own ethics, and does so in a way that positions them alongside an irrelevant nostalgia act at the highest possible price for fans. It is the exact opposite of LCD's approach to their finale.
He's got a pretty manageable argument if he can prove they didn't correctly pay royalties based on the 5 people who streamed those songs.
Interestingly a lot of those cd-heyday releases are super rare/valuable on vinyl. DMB for sure, oddly. But ok, I can play! I'll take vinyl issues of: Lemonheads 'Come on Feel' Live 'Throwing Copper' Alice in Chains 'Dirt' Annie Lennox 'Diva' House of Pain 'Shamrocks and Shenanigans'
THIS IS SLANDER!! Left unchecked, people might get the idea that Billy Corgan can be a difficult egomaniac.
I like it ok, not as much as I'd hoped to. I don't really feel a need to compare it to Visions, it's different, that's all. As a weird record, it's not all that weird. As a pop record, it's not really that distinct of a pop record. There are times when I think her vocals let the songs down, like they'd be better in the hands of a true singer. The whole thing comes across like an advertisement for Grimes as a producer/songwriter for other acts, but not very compelling for her as an individual artist.
He has all these songs but isn't going to record/release them yet because he's an artist with label and marketing strategies to consider, just like every other mainstream artist. In what universe is FJM an outsider artist? Is it simply because he hasn't sold 6 million records? It's not like anybody's confusing him with Jandek. I'm fairly certain this guy is a major draw at all the big buck ACL/Lollapalooza/Coachella fests. I think he tried to take the piss out of the TS/RA moment because in part he was passing judgement on an artist simply based on his presuppositions.
As an occasional fan of both of these acts I find this collab to be as sadly predictable and artistically banal. I'm not saying they've gotta be at the vanguard of expression, but both of them have made naked videos and ridden that 'NSFW' tag into the ground. I just assume they're gonna be naked in a video, not remotely surprised by it. But I guess this will help drive their SEO until the next Record Store Day $50 LP.
In related news, Kevin Parker also thinks he should be able to sample other artists for free. So, you know.
From the Salon comments: "Tony Glover · I am African American, rather progressive, and really don't get the outrage. I have no qualms about raising issues of race. And unlike some, I do not denigrate this article for "political correctness" as those who use that term tend not to want to address any issue impacting race. However, Ms. Swift does not seem to invoke colonialism in this video. The focus is on scenery and animals, and, if anything, she seems to be careful not to invoke Africans or Whites in colonialist postures. The setting is very specific, a Hollywood film shoot. In fact the only humans in the video besides Swift's character and her boyfriend's character are the clearly American Hollywood film crew (10 people at most) filming them. Is that the critique: that she imagines herself a Hollywood film star of the 1950s shooting on the continent without commenting on colonization? Was her crime that she was supposed to excoriate colonization in a video that is essentially a dream imagining herself on location on a safari in Africa? Really? Are we to lay that burden only at the feet of Ms. Swift? Ms. Swift is far from the only music star to use sub-Saharan Africa's wildlife, culture or scenery as backdrop to a video. Numerous recording stars (both Black and White) have done the same. Ludacris, Robbie Williams, Rick Ross, Michael Jackson, Coldplay, Solange, Skrillex, Janet Jackson, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Leona Lewis are just a few that I recall. Of these, only one of which I am aware, did so as an explicit critique of colonization (Janet Jacskon in her video “Got ‘Til Its Gone,” partly a critique of apartheid in South Africa). Instead of shooting on the African continent, was Ms. Swift supposed to go to the nearest American wildlife safari instead? The reality is that most African countries and their conservation efforts cater to people of her means to help with conservation efforts, which, as the article points out, Ms. Swift has done. So, I ask, is this really a problem? Help me understand it, please."
Annie Lennox' 'Diva' is a fantastic record. Get into it.
Hey, at the end of the day SG is still just Spin magazine. If you're going to buy some PR, they're what? the 2nd, or 3rd call you make.
ah, here we go. http://www.jambase.com/Articles/126031/Dead-and-Company-Mayer-Chimenti-Burbridge-and-Core-Three
