I'm going to assume that your cat walked across the keyboard and "accidentally" typed that...
Thank God for the video! Those lyrics are so deep, now I know what she's talking about!
The real show happened after. I know watching Lorde cover All Apologies was unbearable, but the rest of it was pretty damn cool!
Aww! I was at that show where they smashed the drums. Seattle Arena in 93'. They played baseball with the guitar and drums. It was a blast :)
Yep. This list is a joke! In Utero has Kurt's best crafted songs, yet only one of them makes the list? How about you let a Nirvana fan write the list? For now, it's probably best you hand your brother back his iPod.
Might as well start with the source and hit Stereogum for spreading this story with ZERO accountability.
I just saw the [f] in the corner of your picture. You are truly an under appreciated songwriter :) "Got no Shadow" and your 7" of Elliott's "I figured you out." still get a healthy rotation in my music collection. Sending you my best!
Not sure why this was downgraded. Major props on the Mary Lou Lord pic. Another brilliant artist not appreciated in her time.
Last thought: It's possible the writer didn't get into Elliott UNTIL he was on Dreamworks. If that's true, you should leave the Elliott Smith list writing to people who grew up with him. Better yet, start at Roman Candle and then experience each album every other month, so you can watch the growth of one of the best songwriters of his generation.
Ya, the interviewer is so quiet. The it's shit this and shit that and muthafucka this and muthafucka that. Someone needs to hand this man a thesaurus!
Success! At the end of the day our site is blowing up! We have 83 comments and a ton of views!
Actually her name and facebook page have already turned up...
Nice... You are as guilty as Stereogum for giving fuel to this fire. You don't know the victim. You don't know the artist. What we know about her: She has a fan tumbler to Oberst, she claimed he wasn't popular in 2003 (totally false...), she used information about his brother (which is available on his wiki site), and she removed all her posts today. I urge you to read the publicist statement again so that you can separate your own personal feelings of rape and understand how serious of an issue this is. The accuser is in the wrong here. Stereogum is definitely in the wrong here. This isn't news. This is a way to get more hits on their site. I have an idea, rather then attack someone personally for NOT taking rape lightly (like I have) and more importantly being upset that the media would use people LIKE YOU to make their website blowup (which I am!), why don't you get some facts before flaming someone. There is no righteousness here. This has nothing to do with me or you, this has to do with a crazed fan making a horrendous accusation that could have a horrible effect on the musicians life forever. You don't simply walk away from this kind of accusation unscathed. It takes a sick person to accuse someone of rape. It takes an even sicker person to agree with that person without knowing A DAMN THING ABOUT IT! "Unfortunately, the internet allows for groundless statements like this to travel the world before the truth has any time to surface. This is a particularly serious and sickening allegation and there is no truth to it. Conor has nothing but abhorrence for the perpetrators of such crimes of sexual violence." Read that again and get it through your OBVIOUSLY thick skull. Is it sinking in yet?
Who the hell makes rules for rape victims?
*Your comment has been downgraded by two Stereogum employees.*
No kidding huh Ben? God forbid people actually have intelligent thought comments in the Stereogum discqus
I agree! Whoever gave the okay on this article, know that you have turned a random blog (that has absolutely NO credibility and even less after they have removed some of their posts) into what could turn out to be a scandal. It is going to do nothing but harm to Mr. Oberst. As a member of the media, you are responsible for posting truth on the internet and not drumming up BS for the sake of the amount of hits you get. I hope Mr. Oberst takes you to court and sues you for every penny you have...or at the very least, the person responsible for this drivel is fired.
Thank you! A voice of reason! Sure it could have happened, but most likely, it's some disgruntled person who is discrediting Conner by making up a story about rape. Most likely a male who has no idea the complexities of his attack.
...and so are you for believing this BS and more importantly for giving more fuel to the fire.
I'm the embodiment of rape culture? You're the embodiment of a society that believes anything they read on the internet. You are a mindless walking tool who doesn't have a clue how society works. ...and don't talk about rape to me, I know plenty of people who have been sexually abused and raped. This is not a laughing matter. This is not a joke. For someone to post something anonymously and attack the credibility of an established artist is cowardly and simply lacks all credibility. You march on to the internet defending someone you don't know and something you know nothing about. For all we know, it is probably someone who dislikes Conner's music and has decided to post a harassing lie on the internet for all the world to see. DID THAT THOUGHT EVER PASS THROUGH YOUR THICK LITTLE HEAD?? Use your brain before you talk. Better yet, go unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of your computer and then go think long and hard about how stupid you are to believe such a idiot story.
It this kind of idiot thinking that would believe that some random "girl" on a website would post that Conner raped her.
Anyone making light of this story, needs to shut their mouth. This is not something to joke about or take lightly. Rape is not funny. People lying about rape for attention, belittles all those who are truly raped. Whether you like Conor's music or Conner himself, you have to feel pity for people making faulty accusations, because even if they are NOT true, it stays with you for your whole career. This girl should be ashamed of herself for using rape as a way to get attention. If she was truly raped, she should have gone to the authorities immediately after it happened. Not, wait for 10 years and then post it anonymously on a website. What the hell is wrong with people?
Have you ever done coke or heroin? MDMA has addictive qualities. Anytime you boost your serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine levels (like MDMA does) it has a negative and harmful effect on the body. MDMA, coke, heroin, crack, crystal, speed, whatever you want to call them, they are all hard drugs that are damaging to the brain, the body, and the mind. If you want to talk about the addictive properties of the drug, heroin is the drug that takes the longest for you to get addicted to. (For most people it takes months of steady use.) While alcohol does more damage to internal organs then all of those drugs combined. I'm all for expanding the mind and getting high, but use it responsibly people. The media should not be posting positive articles about drug use. It just gives the drug hype, which causes more people to "be curious" and use it.
Great little pop songs, though kind of annoyed that she sang along to what appeared to be about backing vocals....
The Beastie Boys don't owe anyone sh!t for how they acted. It's part of life. You do stupid things when you're young. The have more then made it up for it over over the years. Listen to their lyrics and you will actually know what you are talking about, instead of spouting off nonsense.
Greedy, really? They don't want their music to be used to sell items for a large corporation, and you call them greedy?
Oh god that's horrible...
When your Daddy is Mr. Moneybags, you might as well drop $10k like it's nothing.
Oh please! Anyone who down voted this needs to grow up. She is using sex to sell her album. She's cutting through all the BS and showering herself nude. (Metaphor for the music?)
I wouldn't exactly kill this a win...
Anyway, here is my list! 1. Black Sheep Boy and Appendix – Black Sheep Boy is one of my all-time favorite albums and the appendix made it ever better! 2. The Stage Names. A classic!! Stand out tracks: A girl in port, John Allyn Smith Sails, Unless it Kicks, Plus Ones. (...I should just name the whole album) 3. Classic Okkervil! Stand out tracks: Don’t Fall In Love With Everyone You See – Kansas City, Red, Otis Redding.. 4. The Stand Ins - I actually love half of this album...but I hate the other half. I do think it has their best song, "Blue Tulip" on it. Stand out tracks: Blue Tulip, Tour on Zykos, Lost Coastline, Pop Lie. 5. Down The River of Golden Dreams - Good album and a classic, but they hadn't quite caught their stride yet. Stand out tracks: For the Enemy, Down the River of Golden Dreams, Seas too far to Reach 5. The Silver Gymnasium - Still to early for me to rate this higher, but it's really growing on me! 6. Stars too small to use: Debut album. It's rough, but a nice starting point for the band. Stand out tracks: For the Captain and Oh Precious. 7. I Am Very Far - Just forget this album came out. I gave this about 4 listens and they were forced. I would recommend skipping this album. There is no reason to listen to it, when you can listen to any of the others mentioned above!
I'm just wondering if you actually listen to Okkervil River or if you have friends who listen to them.. BSB Appendix was an add on to the album and it's not fair to treat it as it's own album. It fills in the gaps of the storyline in BSB. (Also, it has a handful of beautiful orchestrated instrumentals and a updated version of "For the Captain" off of "Stars too small to use.". (You didn't even include that album in the rating...) Also, you dismissed "Stand-Ins" all together without mentioning Okkervil's best song to date, "Blue Tulip". Not to mention, "Tour with Zykos", "Lost Coastline", and "Pop Lie". Yes, "Stand-ins" doesn't measure up as a whole to "Stage Names", but the album has some of Will's best work. His lyrics and arrangements of the songs set him off in a whole new directions. I know these lists are an opinion, but most of the time it seems like you don't have a clue as to what you're talking about. Also, putting "I am far" anywhere but near the bottom is a huge mistake. The album is barely tolerable. There are no beautiful love songs, well thought out lyrics, or anything that closely resembles what we love soo much about Okkervil, the intimacy of Will's craft. Maybe do a little research or at the very least read up on their AllMusic or Wiki page?
I think he's just passionate. What's wrong with an opinion, a little attitude, some thought, and passion going into a comment?
...and one more reason white girls should not act like thug chicks.
Oh the pain! The pain of it all!
Apparently people don't like hearing "facts".
OMG he totally did! Does that mean he can't use the internet anymore? You should berate him and pat yourself on the back for being better than him!
