Just to clarify this was hardly a revelation I had while listening to the new tracks. Tobacco recently did an AMA on reddit and basically came out and said he was tired of feeling like he had to have a certain sound with each project. The whole AMA is worth checking out as is the prank call he has up on soundcloud. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/zq3kt/iama_black_moth_super_rainbow_iamalsoa_tobacco/ http://soundcloud.com/sbarro-hottopic/little-ted
It seems like BMSR's sound is moving towards more of a garage-rockin' skate-jam sound. Compare this to almost any track of "Falling Through a Field" and it's pretty apparent that the identities of Tobacco and Black Moth Super Rainbow have finally merged. I wouldn't say that's a bad thing at all based on the singles I've heard off "Cobra Juicy."
*After hearing that AND the new track...
That Teen Daze remix is phenomenal. After hearing that the new track Union I'm thoroughly convinced he needs to put together a vocalist collaboration album à la Dntel's "Dumb Luck."
I was really hoping Fix It would be on here. Easily one of their best songs. Like, probably in the top 10.
I was a little put off by "Dumbin" and "Bad Bitches," but this track sounds like the Star Slinger I know and love. It's soulful with just enough electro-dance flair to dance to.
Four Tet really can do no wrong.
Merchandise's "Children of Desire" EP is one of the best things I've heard this year. My friend insisted I check it out and while he normally points me towards more straight pop-punk acts (he is incidentally the one who got me into Joyce Manor) I was pleasantly surprised upon first listening to the new EP. In Nightmare Room is a great track (and really, the whole thing is better when listened to as one whole track) , but the opener Thin Air is what always pulls me in and keeps me there.
Don't make me go Michael_ on you guys, Stereogum!
I was at the Friday show but like I conceded, my disappointment may have stemmed from the fact that I really only got into Passion Pit with the latest album. What the hell is up with people downvoting on this site because they don't like your opinion? That's not directed as you as I'm assuming you had the sense to reply and give your opinion rather than downvoting me because you disagreed. Anyways, what other shows did you catch?
Against Me! was hands down the best performance of the festival. Menomena and Beirut were close follow-ups, but I don't think there was a single person in the crowd at Against Me! standing still. The energy of that band is indescribable. I went into the show having been more there to see Joyce Manor and thinking I'd catch a few songs of Against Me!'s set and then leave, but halfway through the opener I knew I wasn't going anywhere. I highly recommend anyone even remotely interested in the band, punk music or live shows go see them. I spent the entire rest of the festival thinking "well, maybe x will end up being better than Against Me!" and was proven wrong every time. I have to say the most disappointing show I ended up seeing was Passion Pit. Granted, I wasn't a fan of their previous albums and was crammed in between a bunch of screaming teenage girls, so maybe that played into things a bit, but their show just felt so scripted. I think they mentioned "Portland" at least 2-3 times between every song ("Portland you're our favorite, Portland!", "We love you, Portland!", "Portland, Portland, Portlandddddd!", etc.).
Caught these guys at MusicFestNW this past weekend. Holy shit did they put on a good show. I was worried that without Brent their sound might end up lacking, but that totally wasn't the case.
Nathan, I see your single cat-five and raise you: http://chan.catiewayne.com/m/src/134393873017.gif
I caught Joyce Manor opening up for Against Me! for MusicFestNW up here in Portland. Neither band disappointed.
I was going to wait until my pre-order arrived to finally listen to the album, but now that it's up streaming I think I'll go for it. Yet Again convinced me to order the album, so I'm hoping hearing the album it's entirety doesn't make me regret my decision.
There's a new Titus Andronicus coming out?! Fuck yeah, thanks for the tip!
Do people really like The Wayward Bus over say, The Charm of the Highway Strip or Holiday? In my opinion, the latter albums are perfect, while The Wayward Bus is hit and miss at best. This is a wonderful cover and the original is a great song too. I just don't know why people always seem to tout Wayward, 69 Love Songs and i which while all great albums are nowhere near the same level as Charm or Holiday. I guess that's just my opinion, but my love for those albums is deep.
Hmmm, I was really hoping Brent leaving the band wouldn't affect their sound too much, but I feel like the tracks I've heard so far off Moms are definitely lacking something. I guess I'll be able to judge better after seeing them tomorrow and hopefully hearing some more tracks off of the new album.
While searching for an appropriate GIF I found this and figured it works better than anything else I could find: http://img.izismile.com/img/img5/20120420/640/its_a_big_fat_mystery_640_09.jpg
I jumped around screaming like a teenage girl throughout the whole show up here in Portland. The cover of "Spanish Bombs" was spot on too. I'm really hoping the new track they played ("The Left Is Right") and the two being released later this year end up leading to a new album. The band seems to be as solid as ever and undeniably energetic.
Shhhhhh! Don't tell me! I'm waiting for the pre-order!
The song's decent, but I was really hoping for something more along the lines of "Head In A Ceiling Fan." I realize I came into this band only recently not really being familiar with their hardcore roots, but I've heard enough Hot Water Music, Jawbreaker and Archers of Loaf to know this style can be done quite a bit better. Maybe I'm just getting older and less tolerant of all that yellin' and drum bangin'.
I definitely regret missing out on that one. Everyone I know who went said the same thing.
I wish. The line-up looks awesome. I'm settling for MusicFestNW this week, although I'll be seeing Joyce Manor, Tallest Man On Earth, Purity Ring, Flying Lotus, Menomena, Beirut and Gardens & Villa there.
I'm surprised more lists in the comments don't include "What Would I Want? Sky." I love that song and was really hoping Centipede Hz would be more in that vein. I'd be interested to hear what a more sample-heavy Animal Collective sounded like.
Generationals just keep putting out consistently better tracks.
He actually premiered it today at the Venice Film Festival. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/08/31/spike-lees-michael-jackson-documentary-rocks-venice-film-festival/
The fact "Chores" was the only track included of Strawberry Jam is disappointing to say the least. Couldn't you just make this list with all of Strawberry Jam, "Street Flash," "Did You See The Words," "Grass" and a couple of the better MPP tracks and call it a day? I guess that would be too many songs for '10 best' list, so I'll give this a shot. In no particular order: Peacebone Unsolved Mysteries For Reverend Green Fireworks Street Flash Did You See The Words? Grass Leaf House Bluish What Would I Want? Sky Er... and Guys Eyes... and Water Curses... and My Girls... and No More Runnin'... Damn it, this IS hard.
Okay, okay... fine! I'll see these guys at MusicFestNW... but they better get real weird on me if I'm skipping out on Wild Nothing for this show.
I have it saved on my computer as "chill gumbro" so it's easier to locate.
Write About Love also has "Little Lou, Ugly Jack, Prophet Jo" and "The Ghost of Rock School." It definitely took time for the album to grow on me, but then again I loved The Life Pursuit as well.
That said, Lazy Line Painter Jane and String Bean Jean take the cake as far as their best songs go.
"...the fourth full-length B&S is inconsistent, incoherent, and almost entirely unsatisfying." What?! The album is great! It's far better than the inconsistent, incoherent and entirely unsatisfying "Storytelling."
Ah, of course the stream is taken down by time I get around to listening. Can someone type out to me how it sounded?
As much as I love Four Tet, I was really disappointed with Lions. It sounds like someone needs to shut their tiny dog the fuck up so I can listen to the track, but then I realize it's just some terrible sample Kieran decided to throw in.
I'll definitely second Bossanova. Probably my favorite Pixies album. That's not to say Surfer Rosa and Doolittle aren't amazing, but I don't understand why people Bossanova is always overlooked. Aside from Velouria (which in my opinion may be the best song the Pixies ever wrote) you also get Down To The Well, Dig For Fire, Is She Weird and Stormy Weather.
Did you just say Pet Sounds was the most overrated album of all time?!
"In On The Kill Taker" and "Steady Diet of Nothing" ranked above "End Hits"?! I agree with your sentiment that it's hard to really call one of their albums the "worst," but End Hits should be in the top 3. Break is the strongest opening tracks from any of their albums. Place Position, Recap Modotti and Five Corporations are all in my personal "best of Fugazi" list.
