My parents played Steely Dan a lot in the house when I was growing up (in the 90s) and they're one of the first artists I ever got into. Then I got to discover them again as a teenager when I gradually figured out what all the weird and awesome lyrics meant. Personally, I've never vibed with the mid-decade albums as much as I do with the early and later-decade ones - they've always felt 'transitional' to me, and less fully-formed. But that's just me. The Dan has a super-special place in my life and I think their entire catalog is amazing.
Here's my list, for what it's worth:
1 - Aja
2 - Can't Buy A Thrill
3 - Pretzel Logic
4 - Countdown to Ecstacy
5 - Gaucho
6 - Katy Lied
7 - Two Against Nature
8 - Royal Scam
9 - Everything Must Go
What's everyone's favorite Dan song? I think I have to go Deacon Blues but LAWD there are so many choices.
Fun thread! Surprised nobody's mentioned Dylan yet. I'm not the most gigantic fan but:
1964 - Times They Are A Changin'
1965 - Bringing It All Back Home AND Highway 61 (jeez)
1966 - Blonde on Blonde
1967 - John Wesley Harding
Another run in the 70s too
Maybe I'm just over-excited about 2k15 right now, but I could definitely see CRJ having a Robyn-style transition from "pop star with 1 big catchy song" to a serious critically-adored pop artist down the road.
Two first thoughts:
1. Loved the writeup for the Real Estate record, Chris. Made me feel feelings and perfectly pinpointed how I felt about the album: not quite sure about the sentimentality at first and then so, SO sure about it six months later.
2. RUN THEM JEWELS FAST!!!!!!

Apparently the contacts/hair was an shoutout to Method Man's album 'Tical', which was released 20 years ago yesterday

Let's play what are some lines on RTJ2 that made you go "OHHH!!!" the first time you heard it? Here's one for me:
"I’ll tea bag a piranha tank, heart barely beatin' /
A wild one who’ll swim like directly after he's eaten /
While holding a toaster oven that's plugged with a fork in it /
Cause death by electrocution's like life in New York, isn't it?"
