Aw, yay! I helped with the thing! As I mentioned, I have an Android device so won't be able to call in, but I would love to know how y'all keep track of your top songs/albums of the year. Mostly because I'm a spreadsheet nerd, but I also am curious if it's different for everyone, if everyone's rating scales are different, etc. My less earnest question is, is Elizabethtown truly the worst movie of all time? (RIP Videogum)
Wow, seeing Anberlin on there brings back some memories. I feel like this is missing some of the other Epitaph bands from the same era and a From First To Last reunion. Me like ten years ago would be into this kind of nostalgia but now, not so much. Already got to see Motion City Soundtrack reunite for NYE2019!
Seriously, I will not stand for this Motion City Soundtrack erasure
Yeah I want to be excited about this return to pop punk but it feels... kinda empty? I can't quite tell what it is, but there's something missing for me.
Twitter can take a back seat while Lin drives his EGOT machine all the way to the bank!
I think that people want to see more support for the Black country music community (specifically, in this case, in Nashville) before giving this guy an open pass to be back out performing in prestigious venues. As far as I can tell, Wallen has done little to nothing to show that he's done the work to understand the weight of his actions last summer, and it's hard to see how the Opry thought this was a good idea.
Tangentially related, thank you to the 'gummer who linked to Best Movie Ever (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/best-movie-ever-a-totally-jerkin-book), the book about Josie & The Pussycats. My copy arrived today! I'm stoked to read it.
That sample is really something in the GOT the beat song. I think I like it, but may need to listen to it a few more times until it clicks.
I would love a future Callin' Me Maybe (when I can listen live, come on Android woo) to be a chat about how y'all keep track of music for things like Best Songs of the Week/Best X of the Year/etc. Would love a little behind-the-scenes peak, as well as a way to better figure out how to organize my own listening habits.
Okay, I was hesitant to play this through but... this is great?! I wasn't a huge After Hours fan, but I may revisit it again now... maybe I wasn't in the right place. But I'm 100% into this at the moment.
Are there write-ins for the Gummy Awards? New tradition?!
For me that was college, but Avril Lavinge peaked when I was 13/14. I remember walking around in ties & a million bracelets & rings thinking I was, uh, very punk rock? I think? So yeah, seeing these 2000s trends pick back up has been weird. But I also love it?!
Welcome to the club! I mostly lurk & would also like to comment more, as well.
This personally isn't for me but I fully support anyone whose thing this is!
I'm very looking forward to a 2022 release from her! Loved her last album, and her show was so _so_ much fun.
Ugh, yeah, that sounds about right. I'm so sorry that your kids school is closed and your plans are shot; I'm hoping you can still do some smaller, safer gatherings if you can! (And thanks! I basically save things to that list when I hear something that immediately speaks to me haha)
(And yes, right now my tastes are very Stereogum-core, but this is basically my main source for tunes these days haha)
Fuuuuuck, I literally just had Niki FM stuck in my head earlier today for some goddamn reason.
When I was in college, a friend of mine relabeled all my National music "dour rock" for the genre, and it checks out.
Today Spotify told me there was new Los Campesinos! music and I was so very excited, only to find out that it is some Spanish guitar and not Welsh devastating twee pop. Thanks, Spotify!! Anyway, wanted to point out a few omissions from the Top 40 pop songs of the year: * Sigrid's "Mirror", which is a huge banger! * Anything from the Julia Michaels album. I am a big fan of "All Your Exes" but I'd take "Pessimist" as well * Griff, "Shade of Yellow" I was going back through my playlist where I'd dump songs I really liked throughout the year and saw those. Feel free to listen along! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4vcA5j5IZgQ0v4IF9EBhsu?si=21f5831b4e984233 Omicron is crushing Toronto which is a bummer; my partner was supposed to see Intervals & Thank You Scientist tomorrow but it just got cancelled like an hour ago. Things have gotten really intense in the past 48 hours. Hope y'all are staying safe.
This is so sweet! Also as someone who is also part of the Two First Names Club, I'm very excited to know she's also a member. Kudos to Megan and her future successes!
Ugh, so good. Thanks for the rec!
Ah this song is lovely! And thanks! We've been dating for almost 10 years and got engaged last summer, so we're very chill about it. It weirdly feels like a formality (thanks, Ontario, for your very lax common-law rules!) but we're mostly excited to have close family and friends in one place after a very weird 18 months.
Gettin' married in June and got to start doing some fun stuff today. Things finally feeling slightly normal in Toronto is still super weird, but it was nice to go into places and feel like I could linger without needing to run out in 5 minutes. On that note, what's everyone's favorite wedding songs that aren't on a standard DJs list? We're not, well, traditional people? And our bestie is DJing; she's got tons of jazz and blues for quieter times* but I'd like to pad it with some unexpected gems. I'm gonna sneak in "My Favorite Book" by Stars, for sure. *We met via the swing dancing scene and I'm very particular about taste here haha
I mean, just come on. I'm not crying, you're crying. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBBPKedba5o
I love the existential dread of the 2006 revival of Company & think all performances are the best of all, but Elaine Stritch truly makes this song what it is. I hope she and Steve are just chillin' past the pearly gates talking about this song for the rest of time.
Absolutely gutted by this news. I remember watching him on Colbert with a smile, thinking "dang, so glad he's still around and kickin'." Company and Into The Woods are all-time greats, and he was an absolute master at what he did.
Amazing!! I really got on the bandwagon after Young Enough (and love the Supermoon EP) and cannot wait for new music. They played Lee's Palace last time they were in Toronto, and while they could fill a bigger venue, it was the absolute correct vibe. Maybe they'll tour with PUP up here?!
THIS. Charly Bliss was one of my last concerts before the lockdown & one of the most joyous, fun, positive vibes shows I've been to. I can feel all of that through my screen & was screaming along all the words in my head.
Yeah that's fair, I'm not sure what's so controversial about it either! The whole world seems to be Team #FreedBritney so for her to be unable to talk about it is wild.
I think after all this Britney may feel abandoned by those who were around her back in the late 2000s. She basically spend well over a decade being trapped and seemingly having no one at her back, especially after what apparently happened in the courts in 2019. It's unfortunate the prepared answer from Christina was "publicist pulls me away and I don't have a comment", and I think Brit was hoping for more. I'm hoping they can reach out to each other privately, as well, to have an honest conversation about it. One that we also don't need to be privy to! Let them handle their business privately.
Oooh I'd be down for shows at Massey. I recently moved farther out of downtown so things on the Yonge line are preferable for me now. (I do miss living a 5-minute walk from Lee's Palace.) Charli is playing Massey which seems really weird to me, but I'm also old now and sitting during a show sounds AMAZING
That sounds awesome! I might wait until 2022 & see how things go over the colder season...
Happy Friday, gummos! That performance of Silk Chiffon posted earlier this week has caused that song to be stuck in my head and it's been joyous. Toronto's weather wasn't too bad this week & listening to it while the sun is shining in the fall is a 100% good time. Have any Torontonians been out to shows yet? How is it? I'm feeling pretty anxious about it still (I took the TTC today for the ... second time since March 2020 today if that's any indication of how I feel) but would love to get some shows under my belt soon.
It's kind of crazy to think that in the past 4 months this went from probably-just-gonna-keep-going to holy-shit-she's-free. Can't wait to see the investigation into her father continue & someone held responsible (hopefully) for what has been the status quo for the past 13 years. The accountings from the past couple years still will need to be settled but hopefully she can just live her life & not need to get involved with all that hullabaloo. Let her lawyer take the wheel and just enjoy herself for the first time in a while.
It's pure Tony Hawk Pro Skater Soundtrack realness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5boNqPH9vv8
This was so fun! Really love this song & seeing her on TV.
The entire internet loves to play detective on social media, and it's honestly disconcerting. People think they know the outcome of cases with the only evidence being tweets they saw or their own wild theories. While law enforcement should be held accountable for their findings & actions, wildly speculating on Twitter isn't how to make things better. I can assume this comes from a place of distrust in what people are told from the police, but you're also 100% correct on the always-needing-a-talking-head-saying-something-insane-for-ratings news cycle. Let them do their jobs & don't let these young people die in vain. This whole this so tragic.
