My Morning Jacket's Z came out while I was on my honeymoon. Unfortunately, no Spotify to check it out while we were in Maui. I was more disappointed that Kenta Kobashi vs. Samoa Joe was happening the evening of my wedding.
Which also gave us the amazing parody in Mr. Show's "Pallies". "Jesus, this suit stinks." "What?" ...
This is totally Trailercore (has anyone used that term yet?).
I've come to like Tell Me How... a lot more than I did when it first came out. I think some of it was that Barnett was writing about everyday, mundane things that I could relate to more on her first EPs and album. On TMHYRF, she was dealing more with her experiences in the music industry. I can't really relate to that. Not saying she shouldn't have written about those things, but it took longer to grab me.
I avoided The Rewatchables podcast for a long time because I thought I'd hate him on it. Surprisingly, I don't. He's not bad, although he mispronounces a startling amount of words/names.
Oh, just wait until Halsey's album announcement.
New War on Drugs this week? *crosses fingers SO hard*
You're not wrong, but I don't think there are too many poor kids working their way through the competitive equestrian ranks.
Damn. This is nice. Hopefully, we'll get a full album this year so Stereogum can leave it off their year-end list again. (Apologies, but we are contractually-obligated as a commentariat to mention "the snub" in any and all Amen Dunes-related articles.)
I agree about Torpedoes. I own that record, too. Tom's greatest hits album might be the greatest greatest hits album ever. I only held off on this on RSD because I'd heard it'd be out later, too. Most of my local record stores had a bunch of copies of this left after RSD. They actually had a lot of stuff left over this year.
I saw Seinfeld live shortly after Richards' incident. He did a Q&A after his set and someone asked about a Seinfeld reunion. Jerry said that they'd all agreed that they'd only do it if they all hit rock bottom. He said it looked like Michael was getting a head start.
I didn't say I don't want it to exist. Maybe it'd be better as a Swift single, though? Like I said, I thought the songs with her would be more BRM featuring Taylor Swift. Instead (at least for this one), it's a Taylor Swift song with slightly different music. I do agree that it's cool that the association with her is bringing more ears to BRM. Like I also said, I don't have a problem with them working with her at all. I've already pre-ordered this record (I got the cool red/blue/yellow vinyl variant from their site). I really like the first two singles. I just don't see myself listening to this one very much.
It's probably my second favorite Petty album behind Wallflowers. I really love Tom Petty. I think he's one of the greatest rock artists of all time. But, he's very much a singles artist to me. Wallflowers and this one are really the only full albums that I've gotten into.
I think my issue is that I don't want "Taylor Swift songs" on a Big Red Machine album. When I saw the tracklist had two songs with her on it, I thought maybe they'd be more BRM songs featuring Swift than Swift songs that are a bit more glitchy. I've seen interviews where Dessner discusses working with Swift, and I don't doubt that he's doing it for artistic reasons. I don't think this is some "sell-out" situation with him or Vernon, but I still will be glad when it's over.
I listened to this and the Jeff Tweedy Roky Erickson cover back-to-back. Musically, this one sounded like what I thought the Tweedy song would sound like and vice-versa.
I really did try with Folklore and Evermore. My wife listened to them a lot around the house, and I did on my own. Nothing. I just don't dig her.
I just got that album out last week and listened to it. I wouldn't go as far as classic for me, but I love it.
Gunn ain't flashy, but dude has quietly put out a string of very excellent albums.
I'm very excited for this album. I love that indie rock (for lack of a better term) is finally embracing collaboration like hip hop and pop have for years and years. That said, and I know I'm supposed to respect the motherfucking craft, but I just don't like Taylor Swift. Not at ll. It's just my personal taste. I have purchased her albums for my daughter very willingly. I'm glad my daughter likes her, I just can't. I've tried. I wish she wasn't on this.
It's hard not to just watch Matt when you see them live. He's just so good at every instrument he picks up.
My daughter was also 5 when this came out. Now, we'll hear her singing along to these random older songs and ask her how she knows it, and it's almost always "It's in Sing." Not related to this movie, but a couple nights ago at dinner, I mentioned the Run DMC song "Tricky" (for unknown reasons) and my daughter busted out the beginning of it perfectly.
I was maybe getting ready to be done with this show (how many terrible decisions can two people make?!!?!?), but I'm going to have to watch for Mike.
I feel you here. I've been listening to his first three albums (his "official" ones, not the bandcamp stuff) a lot lately. I had forgot just how great they are. I was so excited for MADLO. I'm still going to look forward to whatever he puts out, but that one was definitely a disappointment.
I agree with the homophobic fuckwit part, but Warrior has been dead for a few years, so I do think he'd sell that choke slam.
Maybe we can use this comment section to sort out which Weezer albums post-Pinkerton are worth listening to? I don’t think we’ve ever done that before here.
Ah! The whole time I was reading this, I had the Big Mountain version playing in my head. I kept trying to remember where Freebird came in.
Yes! Great stuff. I came across them because Glenn Donaldson from that band did an album with Jeremy Earl from Woods this year. It's good, too. Painted Shrines.
Great article on a great album!
I wasn’t digging the singles a ton. Not that I didn’t like them, they just weren’t grabbing me. I listened to the album on headphones today and BAM! It’s not music you can really appreciate if you’re doing other stuff. It demands attention. It’s so fucking good.
New Parquet Courts this year? (fingers crossed)
I was REALLY into August and Everything After. When Satellites came out, I don't think I bought it, but I think my girlfriend at the time had it, so I heard it a lot. For some reason, I got it in my head that it was disappointing. I don't know why I thought that and I don't know if I started thinking that when it first came out or later when that relationship went bad. Anyway, for some reason, I listened again fairly recently. Maybe because of some article or discussion here? I was blown away by 1. how good the album was and 2. how much of it I knew.
I've been listening to Recovering the Satellites a lot lately. I came to the realization that I not only remember the words to a lot of those songs, but I always remember the way Duritz sings those words. I don't think I have that same relationship with any other singer other than maybe Eddie Vedder. I mean, Counting Crows is far from my favorite band. It's odd how much I can recall every little tic in Duritz's delivery. That probably says something about his effectiveness as a singer when it comes to conveying emotion.
Anyone remember Marin Lawrence's bit about Joe Jackson on Geraldo? "That's bullshit, Latto! I only hit Michael one time. Told him to save Tito some syrup."
