That's funny. My wife always wants to meet artists/bands after shows because she has a dream that we'd become friends with them and hang out all the time.
The 'C' is for 'C is the next letter in the alphabet after B which is the first letter of Bono's name".
I know. I read it and I was like, "Hey! A-what's goin' on?" And I screamed from the top of my lungs, "What's going ON!??!" Many viewings of Beavis and Butthead in my formative years has caused me to only refer to Bono as "Boner".
Shit, man! This is incredible. "The ceiling is the roof" Is that a Michael Jordan quote?
Oh, ok. Bill Withers? Nice. Daft Punk. That's cool. Oh, Sade! Nice! The Eagles? Well, alright. Weezer? Ah, fuck.
Eh, I'm just making a joke since the income of the parents of female artists seems to be of great importance here.
Pffft. Her rich parents will probably just buy Browne a new heart.
My god, is "gargle-squawk" an amazing description of Winwood's singing! I love it.
I am an old, but it seems like "banger" has just become "good song".
I saw him on his solo tour a couple years ago in Louisville, and it was not very full. I love Morby, but it was a pretty small crowd and I was surprised. However, Will Oldham was one of the few people in the crowd, so that's a win.
It is. I have proof. My daughter was 5 when that song came out. She sang that song constantly. If you can hook small children with your song, it is a banger.
We are all band.
Having attended a couple Pitchforks, it will be nice to not have it be so goddamn hot.
Hold up. Isn't Doublemint's jingle "double your pleasure, double your fun" where the "fresh goes better" is from Mentos?
So is it one day of Metallica before they sucked and one day of them after they stared sucking? Is that how it works?
LMPD need to worry about themselves getting in trouble.
I knew this song, but had no idea it was Cheap Trick. I think I thought it was John Waite or someone.
The Blue Album came out in the spring of my sophomore year of high school. I wasn't really on top of things, so I probably got it sometime in the late summer or fall when Buddy Holly blew up on MTV. I wore that CD out. It's still one of my favorite all-time albums, one of those albums that totally transports me to back then, but still holds up on it's own merits and not just my nostalgia. Somehow, I totally missed Pinkerton. I heard the singles on radio and MTV and I liked them, but I never listened to that album when it came out. I have no idea why. I had just started college, so I guess I just missed it. It's just weird to me, looking back, that I'd have skipped the follow-up to one of my favorite albums. It wasn't a conscious thing. Like I said, I liked the singles. I just don't know. So, anyway, when the Green Album came out, I had basically gone straight into it from the Blue Album. That may be why I like it more than a lot of people. I never heard Weezer going in any other direction. To me, it sounded like a continuation of what they'd been doing before. Was it as good? No, but I still liked it. I had just moved back to my hometown in Illinois after about 9 months in San Antonio. I had moved down to Texas with the idea that I'd strike out on my own and succeed and blah, blah, blah. I didn't work out. It was a good time (maybe too good of a time), but it wasn't for me. I very vividly remember buying this CD and driving around listening to it right after I moved back in with my parents. I don't look at that time as a bad time. I was honestly glad to be back, so maybe I just associate this album with those feelings. I don't mean to turn this into a Number Ones post, I'm just trying to unpack why I'm more positive to this record than a lot of you are. Circumstances, I guess.
I'm also 'Log' there. Shoot me a message over there.
I never thought I'd see Thomas Wine and Rob Eggert's names on Stereogum. I interviewed each of them many, many times when I was still working in news. Eggert is like a walking "If your lawyer looks like this, you're going to jail" meme.
Darnielle's reached the point with me where he could fart into a microphone for 30 minutes and I'd pre-order the special edition vinyl, but damn, this is good.
Same here. To me, Black Sheep Boy -> The Stage Names -> The Stand-ins is one of the strongest runs of the '00's. They kind of lost me after that. I still need to give their last few albums a better listen, though.
Well, damn. Looks like I'm gonna go see me some Big Thief. I've heard so much about their live show, can't wait to see it myself.
I saw a stripper in Calgary once named Alberta Poon.
Y'all fucked up, Stereogum. That's a picture of Adam Duritz.
Damn. That's the best last sentence I've read.
Only 1 for me, the East Troy show in '03. It was my wife's first Pearl Jam show!
If this is your introduction to Nap Eyes, go listen to their albums! They're a very underrated band.
I’d like to give a huge thanks to whoever recommended The Vernon Spring’s “A Plane Over Woods” on here a couple weeks back. I’ve been listening to that a ton and I love it.
I think the issue is more that she did answer the questions, but later didn't like how it came out. I'm a former journalist (tv) and have conducted literally thousands of interviews. Our policy was usually that once it was on tape (or later card), it was fair game for airing. Now, a person could talk to us afterward and request we not use something, and if they're reasoning was solid, we'd abide by that. The fact that the publication agreed to squash the article tells me that St. Vincent/her team had a good reason to not want it published. Also, I do agree that it was very shady for the journalist to publish it on her blog. That's probably career suicide for her.
There's going to be a lot of dudes wearing t-shirts from breweries at this fest. I live in Louisville and I like quite a few artists on the bill, but I won't go to this. I don't know if it's a totally-Kentucky thing, but there will be a lot of people at this (I'd even bet the majority of people at this) who are just there because it's the big thing going on that weekend. There'll be a lot of people standing there talking through these acts while they kind of half pay attention.
He's the best backup singer ever, IMO.
Great. Now my family's not safe.
I don't know if many people will see this now, but after reading Tom's Superwolves review and hearing what he's going through with his dad right now, it re-frames his comment about wishing he could've been at this show. Seems like he's really going through some shit and now I see his comments here as more of wishing he could go lose himself in a show. I don't want to speak for you, Tom, but I just don't want to pile on you right now. Sorry if my comment here caused you any headaches or anything.
