On my second listen now and… goddamn. It takes the thread left by “Naked in the River with the Creator” and then brings the pain. Great contrast between slow, meditative country rock-n-roll and doom metal. Between Greet Death, Wednesday, and now Spirit Was, country-doomgaze is becoming my favorite new micro-genre of indie rock.
Album rules. The Trace Mountain album rules. I also went back to The Glow the other day and that album rules too. LVL UP forever 👾💜
“Infinite Josh” and “Gentle Afraid” sound like they took the sounds of the Los Campesinos Christmas EP and stretched out to match () era Sigur Ros. Killer stuff.
And I’m ass over elbow for Mercurial World too. It’s a headphone album with the hit rate and sequencing wizardry of E-MO-TION.
Every Big Thief album has had big “This is not even my final form” energy. They’re only getting better, and more interesting as they keep cranking out songs.
I really liked that Vauruvã joint, but that led me to Kaatayra and… holy shit Kaatayra. That acoustic/Spanish guitar album especially bowled me over. The way it blends BM, dream pop, bossa nova and general tropicalia (idk what I mean but it makes sense to me) is… I’ve never heard anything like it.
Me amo la última canción pero there’s a little too much of a good thing going on in the back half of the album, for sure. That’s kind of why I was comparing it to Pageant Material, which also kind of sputters out beautifully at the end. They don’t call her Spacey Kacey for nothin!
Just saw the Kacey related disappointment in the SOTW thread. If you love Erika de Casier, you should give star-crossed (and Men I Trust, for that matter) another shot when you’re in that mood.
