Y’all are whack. star-crossed is such a vibe.
I love star-crossed and I love that song. My one legit criticism of the album (otherwise blissful) is that it feels like there are three penultimate tracks on it. I can’t tell you which one I’d have cut, cause they’re all great, but at least one of them could have been a big get for Amazon Singles or whatever.
Yes, when I put them in a box I knew it might be a long time before some of them come back out. It’s ok! Less chance of being sprayed with bodily fluids in the basement.
That Indigo de Souza album is really great. Huge hooks and a blown out back end, and she really knows how to build up huge moments. I also love the Wednesday record dearly. They make country noise rock, with whacked out pedal steel solos to boot. And if you like both of those, the guitar player on both records released an EP under the name MJ Lenderman and it’s some great dive bar rock and roll.
Don’t leave your howse until it drops. It’s not worth the risk.
No one tell her that I impulse bought the Amygdala/Listless split today 🤫.
Congrats dude! Can’t wait to hear it.
A few months ago, my wife and found out that she was pregnant. Very exciting! An unfortunate side effect of the incoming baby is that we will need room for their crib/nursery/general crap. I volunteered to box up my turntable, speakers, and record collection to make space. I hadn’t been listening to them much at all, since our new (significantly smaller) apartment has a weird lay out and wonky acoustics. That made boxing up the wax the clear, rational choice, even if it wasn’t an easy decision to make. The time came a couple days ago. I had been dreading it, and was extra grumpy because the whole affair was being expedited by a premature crib delivery (my wife and MIL were CONVINCED that if we didn’t buy it last weekend, it would be delayed, due to crib shortages all over. It shipped in two days and was delivered in three 🙃). But, when I went to actually go and put the damn things in a box, something unexpected happened. I got really excited. Stoked even! Flipping back through all the albums I’ve bought the past 7-8 years brought back a lot of memories, and reminded me of things I’ve had, but hardly remembered because they were crammed in a Kallax. It made me realize that the little dude who I am (temporarily) clearing space for right now is gonna have a bunch of sick jams to dig through someday…
I’m not exactly losing my shit over “Valentine” but I like it a lot. and I imagine I’ll come around same way I did on “Pristine”. But this was the one that clued me in to the Snail hive. Make sure to stick around for the ending. https://youtu.be/AWormYHA_WU
I have to admit that I can’t give a shit about Grimes being back in the studio after the last two Magdalena Bay songs have gone so hard. “You Lose!” might the best one yet, it’s the big tent banger that MGMT have so desperately tried to avoid ever since “Kids” made the EDM bros lose their minds. Also stoked to see Makthaverskan up there. The new song rules!
Just absolutely losing my mind in my living room right now, head banging with my headphones in. My dog is very confused.
Of all the records I loved in college, that are turning ten years old this year, this is the one that sounds like it could be 50. I have a ton of memories associated with listening to Girls, but the music itself feels entirely unstuck in time.
To keep going… Pageant Material uses the pageantry imagery to contrast her desire to shy away from the spotlight, just as star-crossed feels like it’s the Divorce Album that doesn’t want to be a Divorce album. Like, it’s out there in the open, and she can’t not talk about it, but she’s way more interested moving on than stacking up diss tracks.
Every Kacey album has been a grand theatrical affair, especially star-crossed, which actually got a Theatrical release, and each one has more tricks behind the curtain than the last one. But I feel like Same Trailer and Golden Hour play to her more extroverted, hit-making strengths, while Pagaent Material and star-crossed feel more raw and insular (but also very much in the spotlight and expertly put together because it’s Kacey). The latter two also kind of wander off into aimless, languid ballad territory towards the end, but it works because the songwriting is simply too good for skips. And yeah, even when she’s in hot mess/lounge lizard mode, she’s the most put together act in pop music. It’s a joy to behold.
I haven’t listened to any of it or Donda, for that matter. What do I win?
You mean 10 pounds of Degrassi DVDs and The Beatles LOVE on DVD Audio?
The gaudy cover art, the cinematic title track, the literal fucking Movie (have not had a chance to watch it yet), and the Narrative, all coupled with Kacey’s extremely Extra-ness, led me to expect star-crossed to be a blown out, crazy event. I did not expect the record to be this understated and vibe-y! It’s similar to Pageant Material, in that it feels like a comedown from the previous album’s dizzying heights.
I thought I was projecting at first… but Kacey and her band have DEFINITELY been listening to a lot of Men I Trust.
This is an awesome pop song in its own right, but goddamn… THIS is what I was hoping at least one song on Solar Power would sound like. Big HitClips-era pop vibez from this.
Buy a hat and start wearing it to work. Teach em young
No one is worried about Greet Death and thiccness. LFG https://twitter.com/deathbois/status/1427386065778794504?s=21
Damn Slothrust with the top billing over some heavy hitters.
Bring back the port-a-potty slingshot from Jackass 3D
Organizer bros must have seen the Turnstile memes/press and thought “if that band can get that much press from one single turd, what if we covered our *whole festival* in poop?”
I’m just bitter that I chickened out of going to the Hopscotch party back in 2019 on the count of a hurricane.
Mostly Disc 3 I guess, but my wife (who is a bigger fan it than me, most days) can’t stand tracks like “punk love” or “love is like jazz”, and I won’t stop her.
69 love songs is one of my favorite albums that I can absolutely never bring myself to listen to cover to cover (to cover to cover to cover). And it’s not always the same skips!
The turds in the Drake pit pay $500 a head to stand there and watch him mumble
Matty says a lot of things. Who knows. Bring on The 1975: The Movie, streaming exclusively on Peacock
I’m on a unicorn, curb stomping your crocodile tears, old man.
The 1975 can roll out an album however the hell they want if they keep bringing the heat like they did on NOACF
