This is coming from me, a person who thought Grimes was everything back in 2015. But I’m just not buying what she’s selling anymore. Maybe she can win me back next album idk. Things about her music I once found charming I now just kind of find obnoxious and cynical. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll always love “Oblivion” and “Genesis” and several songs from Art Angels, especially “Flesh Without Blood.” And I’ll never for a second say she’s not talented. For sure she is. She’s a very skilled producer and a very unique vocalists. Not that I think artists need to compete with each other, but I’ve found there are a lot of artists who do Grimes sound better than her. I think Black Dresses (and Devi McCallion’s solo endeavors) manage the fine balance of apocalyptic harsh and cute/warm/fuzzy/soft way better. And their music at least seems to criticize the dystopian world we live in, whereas this most recent wave of Grimes music seems to find it lulz-worthy or aesthetically pleasing—I especially go back to We Appreciate Power and Violence (which admittedly I thought was fine at first but now I can’t stand it). I think artists like Arca and Sophie and Katie Dey have the same level of sonic experimentation that c has, and I think their music itself and their visions for their projects are way more forward thinking in that they’re trying to push their audiences forward. I think especially over the past year or so I’ve found Grimes’ music to just be more empty than I did in 2015. Idk if it’s that shes changed or if I did. Maybe it’s both. I think 2012 me needed “Oblivion” and 2015 me needed Art Angels. And I’ll always be appreciative for what that music meant to me in the context of those points in my life’s But I think 2016-2020 me has just found artists who toy with similar sonic palettes, and whose music I think comes from a warmer, more human, and more empathetic place than hers seems to these days. I get that this is possibly a controversial take, and I’m not meaning it as a dig against anyone who is still on her bandwagon. I just think I’m in a different place. And I guess I’m glad I’m in a different place. Idk. I’m glad you guys seem to be getting something out of it though. 💖 ❤️ Bless
Stupid Love is so fun! And I’ll always love every single from Born This Way. I think Applause and Perfect Illusion are underrated. And I think “I’ll Never Love Again” from ASIB wasn’t given enough room to shine with “Shallow” taking all the oxygen. Although “Shallow” was good too. ❤️ Bless
We’ve got Charli, The 1975, Dixie Chicks, Katie Dey, Lady Gaga, Perfume Genius, Chromatics, Avalanches, Phoebe Bridgers, and Arca (and more) on deck. I just don’t see that album sticking with me at all when I’m pretty hyped about all these. ❤️ Bless
It was fine. But only a few really great songs. Lots of meh in my opinion. Nothing matching Art Angels, although I’m not even sure I like that one as much I used to. I don’t even think it’s in the top 10 albums released so far this year. Not when there’s Fiona Apple, Black Dresses, Yves Tumor, Zebra Katz, draag me, beige monk, Dani Lee Pearce, Kate Can Wait, and then Backxwash’s album that’ll be out in two weeks but I’ve already heard it and it’s amazing. ❤️ Bless
I would really like a Chance the Rapper redemption arc. That verse in the Brandy song was really charming and reminded me of his pre-The Big Day music. I wanna believe he's got another good album in him. But The Big Day was painful to listen to. It made me wonder if Coloring Book was a fluke, but I went back and listened to "No Problem" in the wake of that, and it still brought me to tears it's such a beautiful song. It gives me hope that he'll make something good again. ❤️Bless
This reads like something Blathers in Animal Crossing would say when I give him a beautiful Madagascan Sunset Moth and he just takes a shit on it bc he's scared of bugs. haha ❤️Bless
I may be in the minority on this, but I liked the more fast-paced, punky "Infinite Content." It's the only addition I'd make to your track list, and I'd put it between "Electric Blue" and "Put Your Money On Me." But yeah. I love Arcade Fire. They're one of my all time faves. But damn, when that album was doo doo, it was really doo doo. ❤️Bless
IDK where the "search results web results" part came in, but I sure look like a doof. ❤️Bless
I'm sorry to be so light hearted about such a serious thing, but all I can think of is The Fairly Oddparents right now reading this. https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/facebook/000/968/188/192.jpg Search Results Web results ❤️Bless
Also, jloo, if you’re reading this thanks so much for your message you sent through bandcamp. I really appreciated it!! Idk how else to reply to it! lmao I’m clueless 💖💖💖 ❤️ Bless
Congrats WilliamSockner!!! I think I’ve only gotten it once for a dumb Justin Bieber joke I made once around the time he released Purpose. It was before my ❤️ Bless era, so quite a while back. Lmao. ❤️ Bless
I’m so sorry I wasn’t here to comment when SUD was active today. The time differences between here and the US kill me. I really miss not being here to participate, and I’m hoping I can be here more often when I return to America this summer. Sometimes I can catch it if I wake up early, but I was up late last night in part working on editing a music video. So I slept in ;P I really appreciate the love you guys have given me for the P4K shoutout. I was absolutely flabbergasted that my song was singled out, and it basically made my whole day when it happened. Only a couple of the reworks got shoutouts, but they were all amazing! So if y’all get the chance please listen to the whole record and give time and energy to each song! Some of them take a couple listens to completely crack, but they’re all really gorgeous and special in their own way. I’m biased obviously, but after the culmination of all the hard work everyone put in to their contributions, I personally feel like the album couldn’t be much better than it is, and I don’t think any other album you’ll hear this year sounds like it. Jaime is literally the best and I’m so thankful that she asked me to contribute. But I’ll just never be able to exactly put into words how much everyone here means to me. You guys are probably some of the best relationships I’ve made on the Internet, and I really appreciate how each of you has supported me in this little project I’ve undertaken. I was talking to fellow gum user and a collaborator of mine, Alex De La Pampa, through DMs the other day and was saying how I have all I could ever ask for or need in my little pockets of support on the gum, in my community of trans musician friends on Twitter, and from my IRL family and friends who have been cheering me on. Anything else I get beyond that would be great, but it’s just a bonus compared to the other stuff. Thanks for all the love and light you’ve passed my direction. I’m sending all my light and love back to you guys as well. Please stay safe during these incredibly trying times. My new album will be out in two shakes of a bird’s tail. I’ve got to finish this music video, and then my incredibly amazing gum friend sleepyheadphone is helping me with a couple other things, and after that it’ll be ready. 1 and a half years in the making. I started this one before I took a break to make my last record I released. And you guys will get the first taste. I hope I make you proud 💖 ❤️ Bless
Cody, I don’t think whygodwhy was being combative. I think that they were just alluding to the fact Arca copped the aesthetic before Gaga’s photoshoot bc she used that aesthetic for her “@@@@@“ single cover which came out first. Regardless, the same artist designed both things so, it’s whatever. Still, I love both of them. 💖 But at the same time I also feel that not only Gaga herself, but also a significant portion of Gaga’s fan base, wishes she had half the amount of innovativeness as Arca has in one of her 6 teats being milked by a robot. Peace and love ❤️ Bless
MY NONBINARY ASS—WHAT LITTLE THERE IS OF IT—IS QUAKING!!!!!!!!!! ❤️ Bless
This is so pretty! I’ve been so hype for this record since she teased it like what a year and a half or two years ago? I love all the organic and orchestral touches!!!! ❤️ Bless
Yes, in capitalism it’s always exploited. The difference between a billionaire and the owners of Mom & Pop Burger Shop down the street though is that the billionaire is further removed from the money they are passively generating, and when they make wealth they just sit on it and pass it down to the next generation for them to continue to invest and make more billions that never get spent on any actual things that contribute to a functioning society. However I’ve known Mom & Pop Burger Shop owners who are absolutely ruthless and exploitative to their employees, and I think many of them if they saw a path to becoming a billionaire through further exploitation of those “beneath” them would absolutely take it. Those are the kinds of values and attitudes the capitalist system breeds. ❤️ Bless
It's not just that he has "a team" His billion, like every other "earned" billion dollars of every billionaire in the world in wealth is the result of the unfairly compensated labor of every person that works under him. His profit is passively generated from undercutting the value of all those people's labor. Whether they're working in a sweatshop or at the Adidas store etc. ❤️Bless
The transphobia jumped. 🙄 This Laura Les slander will not do. ❤️ Bless
I agree! This is good but I hope it’s just a tease of something more substantial! There is so much potential here! Go is one of my favorite albums period, and I’m so grateful I heard “Go Do” featured on a Ford commercial while I was watching American Idol freshman year of high school. One of those moments that really opened up my mind to new kinds of music and probably set me on the course to like the artists I like now. Not to mention him being openly gay and very outgoing with his fashion was a powerful image to my closeted-in-two-ways ass at the time. ❤️ Bless
Thanks jloo!!! 💖💖💖 ❤️ Bless
Thanks Chaz! 💖💖💖 ❤️ Bless
This made my day thank you 💖💖💖 ❤️ Bless
💖💖💖💖💖 I’ve been so excited for this to come out, but I wanted to keep it a surprise!!! 💖 Jaime reached out to me sometime last year just after my last album came out, and I was super excited to contribute! 💖 So excited to listen to the full thing!! ❤️ Bless
AOTY contender. “I Want You To Love Me” is an SOTY contender. This album was gorgeous! ❤️ Bless
I QUITE like this! ❤️ Bless
AOTY contender. Tied with THANK YOU as my favorite album by then. This album is an all out noise assault with simultaneously some catchy-as-all-get-out hooks. no one else is doing it like Black Dresses. they've opened so many doors for other artists and pay it forward so much. truly one of my favorite bands. ❤️Bless
Oh my god this is so tragic. Way too young. She was my age. Fuck. Condolences to her loved ones. This just fucking sucks..... ❤️ Bless
I’d never heard this song before today but both versions of the song leave me stopped dead in my tracks. I’m admittedly unfamiliar with a lot of Tori Amos’s discography but just from hearing this song, knowing it was released in 2002, and relating it to a lot of indie music I hear today, her influence runs deep. I see Katie Dey as being a similarly influential artist. At least her influence runs deep in me and my own music and also so much of that by trans artists I interact with on twitter. ❤️ Bless
I’ve done sweaters as pants before. That was a fun couple of days in college where I really felt like I was onto something different haha. ❤️ Bless
I think this one is gonna be a classic. Save Your Tears just started and has made me think that. ❤️ Bless
This is the one where he comes into his own! This thing is stunning!!!! And I still have 4 more songs to go!!! Even “Heartless” which I didn’t like as a single sounds way better in the context of this album! ❤️ Bless
THIS IS IT!! THIS IS THE ONE!!! ❤️ Bless
I like this! Anyone else getting kind of like a more low key, mature version of “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” vibe from these singles? ❤️ Bless
There’s a cringed, pessimistic part of me that expects in 12 years this will have foreshadowed Grimes offering a spirited, sympathetic response to first female president Ivanka Trump’s handling of the michelobultravirus pandemic. I hate it. ❤️ Bless
"Money" is a really vague topic, dog. There's a lot of different ways to rap about it. I feel like ppl don't have this same energy when talking about pop stars singing about "love" or indie guys with guitars singing about "life's mundanity" or punk's screaming about "the system." Only like 20-30% of the bars in this song even directly reference money. There's other songs and rappers that embody this trope way more than Rico Nasty, so I'm confused why you feel the need to snark on her. If you don't like her, that's your prerogative, it's just puzzling to me why this is the angle you're coming at it from. ❤️Bless
Good for her (fuck Dr. Luke) bc that verdict was stupid anyways. We need to at the very least reform our copyright system. ❤️Bless
It is not possible for him to make a bad song. I’m so excited for this seemingly ambient country perfume genius record! ❤️ Bless
This world is going down in Waka Flocka Flames. 🔥 ❤️ Bless
I’m EXHAUSTED ❤️ Bless
This is great! ❤️ Bless
