Yah Reflektor was great regardless of what any of these people are saying. If anything Coloring Book was Chance’s Reflektor. Several gum commenters shit on Coloring Book (even though I just listened to it after trudging through The Big Day to see if the magic I felt the year it came out has been lost on me and no it hasn’t. I still cried when I heard “No Problem” esp. Wayne’s verse.) so I feel like the like-dislike ratio for that album is more similar to Reflektor.
I’m so sad to say it bc I really wanted to like this album so bad, but The Big Day is trash. Like I had a viscerally negative reaction to almost every song. I try to balance my reactions with the fact that I’m also just emotionally in a way different place than what this album is offering. Like I just literally can’t relate to the joy of a straight couple’s wedding rn, which sucks but so is the life of a romantically frustrated queer trans k suppose. And with the skits the shtick was just laid on super thick for me. A lot of the lyrics are cringe for me. And while this album is more religious, it lacks the soul that Coloring Book had. I rolled my eyes at the line about personal branding and relating it to prayer or whatever. And I just wasn’t into how this album finds him mostly using religion as a conduit for bragging about success. I miss when he was collabbing with Noname and covering the Arthur theme song. That felt more genuine than whatever “Hot Shower” was.
In that sense, to me this album is a train wreck enough to be his “Everything Now.” But at least “Everything Now” had the title track, Electric Blue, We Don’t Deserve Love, and the punky version of Infinite Content to balance out at least a few of the terrible moments. I don’t think this album has a single track I will return to.

I am IN LOVE with both of these songs 22–no—a MILLION times more than the first two offerings from the album. Like both Faith and Jelmore are so sonically gorgeous in a similar way to the last album, but create more of a feeling of staring into the sun on a brisk morning while in a hopeful mental state than the last album which just felt almost bleak. But I still loved it. One of the best albums of the 2010s.
