What's happening in Hungary is nothing short of Nazism and beyond an embarrassing shame. Orban needs to go immediately! https://images.app.goo.gl/6k8PEsQCLcPPoG5y9
I'm afraid you are right. I would've hoped the organizers might take this opportunity to re-align the overall roster so as to tilt it back closer toward the original intent of what the "New Orleans Jazz & Cultural Heritage Festival" implies. Foo Fighters? Don't they appear enough all over the place as it is without stealing this festival's thunder as well? Clearly, it's not going to happen as I envision. $$$ drives everything! Oh well ...
A recent week of hogging the entire Bottom 5 comments not enough for ya?
"As a man who has had to make his own way from very difficult circumstances ..." he should've known better all along, that scumbag!
Shit then ... it doesn't wanna load up. Sorry folks!
Yeah, there are several albums out this week that coulda shoulda (yada yada) been AOTW. Certainly this one, but also the new LUMP record (seriously) and a cool tribute to their hometown (LA) by Los Lobos, which I think (not 100% sure) has been completely overlooked here. Pretty good musical week actually. Then you have this bizarre little nugget that just came out of Vietnam (even if I can't handle a full album's worth of it): https://youtu.be/BoDmylQ7omA
Take a pick. Any pick really. Yes, though, getting the next two chronological ones would be smart, and then skip ahead to "Tales from the Turnpike House" or "Words & Music." The comp mentioned further above is excellent too, if that's the route you want to go.
I recently picked up the 2020 2-CD edition of "Words & Music." The bonus disc is just about as awesome as the album itself. Class act all the way!
Saint Etienne does not have a weak album to their name. Even "Sound of Water," one of their least heralded, is a damn fine record. In fact, I've read elsewhere that this album harkens back to that one for its mellowness. This is apparently not meant to be a dance club type of an album (like, say, the more recent "Words & Music"). It doesn't bother me either way. They're always a joy to listen to.
Thanks cheez. Had no idea Tones on Tail made it into the Top 3. Like you, I really really love Tones on Tail. In addition to the 3 great songs you named, they had so many other excellent ones; Lions, Twist, Real Life, OK This is the Pops, etc. https://youtu.be/olbQSnjB89g
Wait a sec though ... did he accidentally credit Monk with writing A Love Supreme? Oops ... oh well, we'll let him off the hook this time.
Had to negate the downvote you got cuz that just ain't right. Buckingham is an unheralded American treasure who needs a lot more love than he seems to get from folks.
Sadly, it actually sounds a lot like a hit in today's market. That IS the problem.
This is the type of thing that TNO readers would likely be all over. Ask those folks?
Agreed. It's incredible how varied and creative they've remained throughout their career while still firmly grounded in the slow-core aesthetic.
Agreed. The more I read about and acquire knowledge of British history, the more disgusted I am with them.
That makes ya one seriously ancient dude these days (seeing as how he looks a good 10-15 years older than the other three already). Cheers :)
Please provide more info on U-Roy release.
Can they instead broadcast the Dec. 18 "Once Upon A Time" show in CA (or some other better festival) please?
Nice heavy-metalish poster design?
He's right about all the Oscar-worthy performances by these actors (I mean ... footballers). That doesn't make the notion of soccer itself bullshit. If played according to how it was envisioned in the first place (which it's not), it can actually be an awesome sport. If they were to clamp down and even punish these thespians more strictly, the game would definitely improve.
Oh yes, how can we forget about them? And VU? Well now, we have to make room in the Top 2 or 3 for them. It ain't even funny how so many of these other bands openly admit a great debt to the Velvets. Certainly R.E.M. did!
Totally agree with R.E.M. and Wilco. I'd place Yo La Tengo above Spoon though (not that Spoon is anything to sneeze at).
On the one hand, thank you Miley for bringing attention to the Cocteau Twins. On the other hand, OH NO! Poor recording (and solid backing band) aside, she MAULED this.
This almost sounds like it could've been on Eno's "Here Come the Warm Jets" album. A good thing!
I'll take this over the preview of that new milquetoast song featured in the previous article.
What's up with that wheel of Camembert?
Saw "Summer of Soul" last night. Magnificent and an absolute must-see! Questlove has hit the goldmine here by presenting just the right balance of historical background, revealing interviews, and unbelievably top-notch concert footage (e.g., Stevie Wonder playing the drums, Sly & the Family Stone blowing minds with a racially and genderwise integrated lineup, Ray Barretto giving a world-class lesson on how to seamlessly meld Latin and Black influences, Mahalia Jackson passing the generational gospel baton to Mavis Staples, the exquisite Nina Simone electrifyingly stirring the audience to a frenzy, and so on and so forth). And it's all so very positive and uplifting (minus the shocking fact that the source material languished in a basement somewhere for 50+ years). Thank goodness this stuff is out now for all to behold!
While I want to too, I just cannot get past her screaming singing voice. No ability to modulate other than constantly reaching for that guttural roar. If it makes folks happy, though, enjoy to your heart's content.
Notice how the real jazz and Louisiana-themed artists are all pushed to the bottom of the list and how the acts listed in the top 3 or so lines more or less reads like any other festival around the US these days.
Cute poster design idea ... borrowed from Spiritualized's "Ladies & Gentlemen" advertising campaign a good while back: https://images.app.goo.gl/5s9rYFvMLMLcNPR67 https://images.app.goo.gl/yb8kGaMFYaiERhoR9
Wow. The variety here tops pretty much any other rap-oriented fest.
Lead album review in the July issue of MOJO, and a very good one. Congrats! She's doing great for herself.
Not saying that there hasn't been some excellent music made since then ... just not quite anything groundbreaking.
