Say what you will about Kiedis' vocals (and I probably won't argue with it too much - he's not what one would consider a classically great vocalist), but damn if dude doesn't deliver live. And yes, that matters. You can hide bad vocals a lot of ways these days, including live. Backing tracks and background vocals fix a lot. Kiedis' sounds exactly the same live, sometimes better. They aren't hiding anything on the studio albums, even less live. I've always appreciated that about his voice/performance style. It's always disappointing to go to a show, particularly and energetic one, and have a vocalist who sounds nothing like the albums, or worse, just can't sing live. Kiedis is not a great vocalist, but he's done a pretty spectacular job working with what he has.
Stadium Arcadium, with its b-sides, is three full albums of good to really fucking great songs. If, as a band, they were new and had only ever released those songs as three separate albums they would still have been successful and known. How successful and known I don't know, but those songs are better than a lot of what was being released around that time and better than what a lot of artists/bands have done in a career. For some people Stadium Arcadium is a low point in the RHCP's career. That should be example enough of how much great music they've released in their career. There are, without a doubt, people here talking about them who weren't alive when they released their fist albums. That's how much goes; you stay around long enough and by default you aren't hip or cool anymore regardless of how good your music is. There's a lot of U2 mentions in this comment section and I might agree with some of them. In relation to the RHCP, I don't. I don't believe they fell off or "got worse". They're the same band they've always been, still making music for the people who love it. The only difference now is, generally speaking, they're better with Frusciante. So lets go! I can't make any judgments on the music until I hear the entire album. And if there's 17 songs on the album you know there's another 10 for b-sides (something the Pepper's don't get enough credit for). I'm ready. Frusciante being in and out of the band had been a lifelong frustration for me. I'm always ready for more RHCP with him in the band.
I clicked play on the dancing penis video without putting my headphones on and at first I was like, "damn, they look fierce, I bet this song is going hard"... *picked up headphones, put them on* ... *took headphones off and stopped the video*
That would be fun. But really, I can hear the sound quality difference on Spotify. I realize that everyone can't, or doesn't, or it doesn't bother some people. But even from YouTube to Spotify I can often hear the difference. I used to ask friends how they could listen to it when Spotify started gaining popularity and most of them looked at me like I was speaking a different language so I gave up on that crusade real fast. I don't have a Spotify account and the only time I ever listen to it is if something is linked here at the 'gum.
Like I said on the last post; just Neil Young continuing to be Neil Young and I find that comforting. It's right that Neil Young should be the grumpy old many yelling about free speech, the corporate music world and shitty ass Spotify in relation to his music. There's not many of these people left, we need to cherish the ones who are still here while we've got 'em.
Always kind of trips me out that there is never any mention of Ani DiFranco/Righteous Babe records in all things relating to Anais' early career and the origins of Hadestown. Did they have some kind of falling out or something? Just seems odd that one of the most independent artist's in the history of recorded music never gets any credit for releasing Anais' music on her label. Idk, maybe just me (pretty obvious it's probably just me). Always check out whatever Anais is doing, will continue to do so.
I like Grimes' music, always have. This song is boring. It's flat and contains not one grain of emotion.
"This is not a rant..." Well, I mean... yeah, kind of the definition of a rant. So much for The Smiths getting back together I guess. Sarcasm, I am not one of those people who ever believed that was going to happen. In a strange way, as much as it shocks me, I kind of agree with Morrissey. Because part of what he is saying is exactly how I'm still able to love and enjoy The Smiths music so much. That WAS lifetimes ago and they WERE different people then. There's an entire universe between then and now.
Breh lmao Why are there so many comments about Taylor Swift's fan base in this comment section? Her fan base didn't say anything. Taylor Swift and very well known musicians who have worked with her said something because Albarn talked out the side of his neck. Making it about Swift's fan base because there's no argument for what they're saying is weak sauce.
What do you do for a living? Because I say you don't. I say you're taking credit for the work of the people around you while you do nothing. You've got everyone fooled. Nobody realizes that you can't even do the thing you keep saying you're getting paid for. Pretty shitty of you if you ask me.
His audience is bigger than the cable news channels. It rivals the Oprah Winfrey Show at her peak of popularity. Too many other people ARE listening to what he's saying render him anywhere near irrelevant at this time. And that does not take into account that in some cases more than one person is listening at one time. Nor does it address that many of those people pass that information on to other people in conversation or use it as a basis for arguing their side. Sorry, it's never smart to ignore people who have that many other people hanging on what they say. Even if it's - to just pull a number out of my ass - one-third of his audience who actually believes the misinformation it's still incredibly dangerous.
Weird, I had totally forgotten about this song and it's one of the Madonna songs I really liked back then. Always enjoyed A League Of Their Own and for me it has aged well. It's still a fun watch. This song is probably in the credits, too, but I don't watch credits outside of theaters.
lol breh... on similar sounding intro on a song that a guy from The National worked on doesn't mean she doesn't write her own songs. First of all, every person she's ever worked with has said she's a fucking amazing lyric writer. Second, she also writes a lot of the music. She's also produced and co-produced. She's not being high horsey, she's defending her shit. It somebody went after Albarn he'd likely do the same.
I don't know what alternate universe this comment came from but it made me laugh.
That's fair. But how is it any different than Neil Young removing his songs so he's not associated with him? They're his songs. It's not even that big of a deal. It's just Neil Young being Neil Young the same as he's been doing since the 60s. The difference is that people who don't like Neil, his music or his views are now much more likely to hear about them. But for real, Neil hasn't changed. This is who he's always been.
"you’d think the message content would be challenged instead of trying to silence the messenger" It has been. Repeatedly. And when nothing further is done to challenge the misinformation, what then? Jan. 6th ringing any bells. Joe has the right to say whatever he wants and I respect that right. But rewarding him with huge piles of money for doing so with no one powerful enough to change people's minds about some of the shit he says is dangerous.
Somebody said something in the original post about hoping this doesn't become an annual thing because of possible diminishing returns of available similar artists. Well... we're clearly going to find out. No way they don't do it next year if they were able to sell three separate days this year.
I like that Neil Young just keeps on being Neil Young. It's comforting.
I mean, was he misquoted? Because that's a pretty straight forward quote in the LA Times if they didn't just make it up. Not mad at Damon. Just comes across like a slightly out of touch old guy for the first time I can remember. Like, young Damon talked a lot of shit, so it's not exactly surprising. He just missed the mark with that hot take. Her earlier country, not his thing. Her big pop albums, not his thing. I would have thought some awareness of the last couple might have trickled down to him but I guess not. Like I said, not mad. Not even disappointed. They'll both be fine. I think it would be fun if amends are made and they do something together. I can imagine their voices together and I think it would work.
I hope that "for now" means the process is going to be simplified. It took me forever to figure it out originally (someone pointed me to a comment section that explains it clearly step by step or I never would have gotten it) but then it disappeared when the comment section changes started. I still don't see any avatars for anyone, not just mine.
"Lots of artists have sustained careers off of one fluke hit" "and if you get your biggest hit off a cover" One fluke hit would imply they only had one. Your biggest hit, more than one. So which is it?
When "psycho" is in the title.
So if I like something you don't like then you need to be getting your ears checked? Come on breh, it's an obit. Just keep it positive. I could say a lot about the music he was a part of... but I won't... because keeping it positive.
While I was never really a fan of his music, Rocky Horror and Fight Club are without a doubt on the list of movies I've watched the most in this life and his performances in both shine. RIP
Awesome. Thank you, 'gum. Could not possibly be looking forward to the new album any more than I already am.
Investigations are ongoing, but I'm not really sure who this "we" is. I mean, "we" lost to Ticketmasters and Live Nations of the world a long time ago. Live Nation Entertainment's net worth is 26 billion (with a b) No matter how the blame is placed for Astroworld after all investigations and court cases are done and settled there is very little doubt that the only thing what will happen to Live Nation is some fines, which they can clearly afford.
Breh... this is presented by Live Nation. It's real. Fyre Fest was promoted by Fyre Media Inc. It was a scam from the jump. Not for one minute would I ever doubt a festival with Live Nation at the top (they REALLY like their profits and all that). 60 bands 12 hours Will never be able to come close to seeing all of them Warp Tour pretty much every year, worse a lot of them But yeah, there's no way you aren't going to miss someone you probably want to see
I don't disagree but completely left Death Cab out on purpose. They were always outside of all this in terms of genre. Yes, very peripherally they are attached, mostly by existing in the alternative world during the same years as all those other bands. But I would never consider them "Emo" and wouldn't expect to see them showing up at a fest like this. The other three, yes, sure. I'm surprised they didn't get FOB for this one. Panic! also, who I had forgotten. Weezer and FOB together makes sense to my ears. Weezer and Death Cab could even work. But Weezer or FOB at a fest like this one in particular would definitely give me some "welp, should have stopped last year" vibes.
I mixed your reply up with Live's. Soary aboot dat ey.
I didn't miss anything and they aren't "mainstream" bands. Even if they had major Hot 100 hits (which is what is at question here) they would be considered crossover. Paramore has one top 40 single Hot 100 single in their entire career, 'Ain't It Fun', which peaked at number 11. My Chemical Romance has three top forty Hot 100 singles... Welcome to the Black Parade peaked at 24 Famous Last Words peaked at 21 The Ghost Of You peaked at number 34 Any of their other chart success would be on alternative or rock charts. So go strictly by your words, "actual hot 100 hits", yes. I do believe it would be fairly easy to make a list of bands that are more "best" than MCR and Paramore in the last 21 years strictly in regards to "mainstream" success. But I have always been very open about my love of both MCR and Paramore. They're two of my favorites. So again, roll with it. Not like I would be mad at being proven wrong.
I could make the list that would easily go over a hundred other options... but naaaaah. I love MCR and Paramore, so you have your fun.
Going over this bill with a big of the ol' discogs makes the label connections really stand out. But even at that, CSH is a bit out of place. Like I said about the Linda Lindas, probably just label/promoter connections of old. Everybody with through their contact lists and here we are. I'm not mad at it.
Epitaph. Probably still some kind of "industry" connections between that label and Live Nation. There's a handful of bands (at least) on this bill who released music on Epitaph over the years. Outside of that I didn't keep up with the industry comings and goings of the indie emo world (was never in it too deep to begin with) so I have no idea if there's some kind of direct connection between the two companies. Or maybe employees who went from one to the other. Or former band members who went on to work in the industry (happens a lot). So... yeah... no idea what the connection is and of course this is all conjecture, but that would be my guess.
Saves The Day... another good call and yes they are. SoCo it looks like not so much.
James Blake influence. Man, music/musician lifetimes move so much faster than they used to.
With that many bands playing on one day it's definitely a throwback Warped Tour vibe. Pretty great lineup, but not good enough to travel to LV. Probably only be able to catch about 1/3 of the acts, anyway. Cool for people who end up going though because that is a pretty stacked lineup. Missing: Fall Out Boy... that's all I can think of off the top of my head
I agree with this in general principal, but exceptions to every rule and all that. (Kan)Ye has earned his level of lyric dissection. He even addresses some of the general public's perception of him in this song. Not to mention he's very publicly using his music as his one way to address his divorce and his ex-wife's new bf. So to you point, yes, but I think we all know enough about (Kan)Ye at this point to know pretty closely where the lyrics and literal truth crossover.
