this is only controversial to white people. 99% of black people wouldn’t recognize this guy on the street, they’d think he was another strung out white dude. nor could they name a song. and good for them. He stinks.
tbh I am as surprised about it as you are. That’s just an anecdote that’s an odd anomaly.
There’s country that indie people like and there’s actually popular country music that everyone listens to and we all know the difference so don’t pretend otherwise cause you don’t like the other kind. (Neither do I btw) The majority of hardcore country music fans don’t know who like Amanda Shires is. She’s fantastic but let’s get real that there’s a divide.
the song sucks and Toby Keith does too but you do know there is a long long history of iconography in America of “criminals being strung up” and it also having nothing to do with race? There’s images of criminals being hung in Westerns from the 60’s to present day Coen Bros and they’re usually not black either. Black people and westerns are mixed together in culture a lot less than country music and westerns are btw (which Blazing Saddles mocked as well as why Lil Nas X was taboo). Not every hanging is alluding to lynchings to black people in American history which btw weren’t usually done to CRIMINALS, just innocent black people and they’re families… So yeah the song sucks and Toby Keith is def racist but keep projecting your own shit like a classic pseudo progressive. We get it. You hate country music fans. But you can’t think of a hanging without thinking of blacks getting lynched…what’s that say bout you?
Btw I’m fully aware how much the first half of this sounds like a Fox News argument but the growing distance of accountability between the two has become way too much and it’s led to people like XXXTentacion becoming a star (and now icon after death) and R Kelly getting nearly two more decades to terrorize after the sex tape trial/Piss On You came out, which should’ve just ended everything. The fact that actual abusers can play the Grammy’s while this guy is banned from the CMA’s (rightfully) yet nominated (cause their audience) is a perfect example of the fucked up society we live in now cause of how much these weird culture wars have warped our brains.
my family listens to country music obsessively 24/7 yet the only reason I remember/know who this man is is from progressives online constantly writing about him.
“WHY IS THIS MAN STILL FAMOUS?!?” - people who write these articles once a week for the public / every dumb bitch who clicks the link EVERY SINGLE TIME
so he’s done nothing else bad you’re saying? Except not repent enough? there should be a rosary woke people give others so they can repent properly
This dude said a bad bad word privately in his own home. This guy is clearly is an asswipe and his music still stinks but if you think this whole situation is ok and normal, blow me. As much as I don't like what he did, that word is literally inescapable if you turn on a radio so seriously what is the damage here? Cause there are plenty of artists who make a career by simply saying that shitty word over and over and over ON the record, literally. Plenty of whom, like CB, continue to have prosperous careers after publicly abusing women in the spotlight and don't suffer consequences. No one cares.
Because failing music media outlets like this and Rolling Stone need stuff like this to poo poo the genres they never cover, validating their bad journalism and helping to get the clicks/attention they need for their website to survive, further growing the cultural divide in America. No one actually cares. It's just a way for outlets and their respective readers (you know, morons) to hypocritically say to themselves "See? All country music is bad. It is for racist conservatives who stereotype groups of people. (ha) They're all closed minded and that is why I don't listen to any of it. (ha)" I mean...I think this guys music sucks...but no one on the internet has any interest in having ANY moral consistency or ethics in the way they interact with culture and people. Anyway, can't wait for Chris Brown to go to the Grammy's again and release another 2 hour album to no ones chagrin on here.
I hate that song and Toby Keith and will till the day I die but everyone go look up the lyrics to it and if you think that song is explicitly racist...that says way more about you. Welcome to the Internet folks. white people projection city.
Better than his last few, influenced by a crack up
Imo the only good comment I’ve ever had on here is my purple rain sequel album below
*into imaginary earpiece* hypebeast confirmed lol love this rant though, personally prefer Orange cause it doesn’t have that 10 min of nonsense at the end….and better songs imo but I don’t disagree with anything you said otherwise!
This is fascinating stuff. I think you’ll absolutely love this sequencing based on all this. All of Side B of The Dawn not included. We Can Fu*k w/1983 Revolution is really good but that version actually felt like the slog bringing the album down (along with Possessed, love that version but the live Revolution version is better in Syracuse, hell even the 1982 version is better so stay tuned wink). I prefer Graffiti Bridge we can FUNK. One quote really spoke to my thought process of this: “if what set Purple Rain apart from 1999 was its concision and pop-friendliness, then my alternate-universe version would be more even more sprawling and idiosyncratic than its predecessor” or in this situation, than it’s companion. I envisioned the below earlier and thought it would add better context :) Congrats on the RS thing btw fr well earned. Side A is Tracks 1-2 Side B 3-6 Side C 7-10 Side D 11-13
Listen in sequence and report back. I promise a mind blowing Prince album experience.
It’s a great great album but 14/10 albums don’t end with Futura Free, sorry hypebeast
Jack, I know you hate me but get this tracklist sequencing published in RS….FOR THE PEOPLE (the boomers will LOVE it)
and I think that’s more than fair…as a user currently on chance #14
Just make a playlist of these songs from the deluxe edition of Purple Rain on your whatever. It’s 75 min of peak Prince bliss..for real. 1999 one is coming next if you all like.
PRINCE FANS. Ever wanted an equally good follow up to Purple Rain? Been diving heavy into all of the official Prince box sets and vault tracks lately. Making abridged companion albums to the classic ones comprised of the best vault songs and all B sides. Trying not to use songs that were released later by Prince himself or ones where there is a superior version of the same song. Made an album of all the best cut Purple Rain stuff first below. Give it a listen, it’s a pretty amazing follow up/Vol 2 to the Purple Rain soundtrack. COMPUTER BLUE 1. Father’s Song 2. Computer Blue (Hallway Speech Version) 3. 17 Days (B Side) 4. Katrina’s Paper Dolls 5. Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden 6. Another Lonely Christmas (B Side) 7. Love and Sex 8. Erotic City (B Side) 9. Velvet Kitty Cat 10. Wonderful Ass 11. Electric Intercourse 12. God (B Side) 13. The Dance Electric
doop doop doop The other Queen bites the dust
I don’t think, I know. (& we all know that I don’t think)
It’s called being dope as hell
Afuckingmen to this comment. Put this on a flag. Btw thanjs for reminding me this came out today as I’ve been waiting for a follow up to IWTGU for years now and still forgot because damn what a music day along with Amyl/Kacey/Keem dropping and Aaliyah hitting streaming.
you know what, I’m gonna say it….this is gonna ruin his music for me. And more than a little!
I was just joking around but this comment made me lol whether it was meant to be funny or not.
You know in America, we call this cultural appropriation…guess it just depends on the artist….
Lmao you’re close. SUD is fun and promotes better conversation than these articles do now. I honestly I usually do read the articles and go on my way. but then comments on these articles are full of great conversation and personal anecdotes/stories and other wonderful stuff that I love to read absolutely buried by people copying and pasting stats, charts, and other online bullshit. Some longer than article. Who for? I’m not an antihero, I’m def being an asshole but idk people trying to just idk spew facts and regurgitate info and music history they read online? Idk that’s more definition of a boring narcissist to me. Lot of pseudo intellectual musical male dick measuring and I like making fun of those people cause they’re a bummer to me…plus people like the guy below quoting Biz Markie. I’ll be cringing for the rest of the night after reading that one…good hippity hop reference.
Also as a huge Sandinista! fan and someone currently wearing a Mellon Collie shirt…I agree on the sprawling doubling album thing but nah…Donda ain’t it for that to me. Forget my cut/sequence and regardless could’ve been EASILY made to fit on a CD. He already has a good messy/sprawl album and it was Pablo. This album was definitely just dumped on us.
Cut the Interludes and it’s great.
polarizing figures often make stupid peoples brains break. Trump is a great example too…who is also an asswipe. That being said 24 was the last song I decided to cut but I do like that song (replaced by Come To Life) and I’ll still stand by Off The Grid being insanely overrated.
Janet. had 28 songs and literally half were skits and she is still a better self editor than you people. If Lester Bangs never banged.
And now for an aggressively autistic, overlong comment by a wannabe music journalist trying and failing to outdo the article itself. Every single time. So boring, so narcissistic. 2/10 why I never read these cool articles anymore.
The Love Below is Above The Hate. I love you, 3000.
ye fans are the worst now. they were bad a decade ago but now they’ve been onlined and taken over by the worst millennials and Gen Z members. I know ur a fan so curious what u think of my Donda list below.
BAHAHAHAH ok fair replace with another whispery gal idk, I like their EP
It’s under an hour and there’s also wayyyy less people who abuse woman on this version so you can make a playlist and stream ethically!
