I was born in ‘93 so Kanye was huge throughout middle school and high school. When he dropped this during my senior year, it felt like a lot of things reaching their peak. Everyone was freaking out about this album. Whether buying the CD/vinyl, blasting it out their cars, or even just digging the singles, it was a huge event. Very few albums hit like that in my lifetime. There are albums that are classics or released during our lifetimes that we all love and consider classics but then there are some that just shake the Earth. I’ve only experienced a handful in my life but MBDTF is a great example of that. I’m talking about those records that seem to cross every generational and cultural line and become a phenomenon but yet...it makes sense because the album actually is groundbreaking and perfect. Adele’s 21 and American Idiot are two other examples off the top of my head. I’ll never forget hearing the beat drop on Dark Fantasy for the first time (after all of the GOOD Friday songs and singles hyping us up) and knowing everything would be different when everyone heard this. With the fracturing of culture due to the Internet becoming such a mainstream part of life, these moments happen a lot less sadly but never the less...it is why we love music.

RIP Chet. Not sure what to even say. Girls were a big band in HS/college for me. Whenever I think of Album, I’m instantly transported to 2009 and wow what a different time. There are just a lot of memories and emotions tied to it all. The Lust for Life video/ending guitar lick. Listening to Album the last time I visited Fire Island a decade ago. Hearing Heartbreaker on a car ride home from college with my friend Catie who is on the west coast now and who I dearly miss. Buying the Father, Son, Holy Ghost CD and having it in my dorm room. Remember just how short life can be. Hope you’re all well and my prayers for Chet and his fam.
