No, but it's a lot easier to imagine being a porn star or a detective than being a Native American woman [for example]. I'd be willing to wager the vast majority of humans imagine themselves in different jobs in different eras in different relationships, etc. – I don't think many spend a lot of time imagining themselves as a different race and gender. I think it's kind of missing the point though. I don't think PTA really *cares* one way or another about the "whiteness" or "maleness" of his leads.
I mean, we create based off of what he know – what does PTA know? He's a white male. I don't think its odd that his movies would reflect that perspective.
Yep – doesn't help that medicinal opiates are widely available and when people can't get them they just resort to things like heroin. Must be one heck of a drug and the distortion it must cause in the brain to prevent people from breaking free of it must be unimaginable.
I hate to say it but this is where my mind went immediately. I knew he'd had his struggles throughout his life with substance abuse and with covid going on and the strange way it has affected our lives I could see why people might return to old "comforts."
Meh, we'll just never get another The Man Who or The Invisible Band again.
Darkness isn't the problem, Zack Snyder was. He's just basically a younger, contemporary Michael Bay.
RIP. I think he struggled with some things in his life that may have affected his health pretty seriously.
Bruh, it's a boyband -- what do you want from them?
Not that any of us are going to listen to SKM, RHP, or any other Kozelek project – but at the time, it was really cool to see RHP featured in a film, even if you can barely hear it and it's only played for like 3 seconds [kitchen scene with Cameron Diaz].
Pretty pivotal movie for me as a young lad. Exposed me to a lot of music I wouldn't have been exposed to. Shame Cameron Crowe couldn't really recapture the same magic in most his other movies, although I swear Vanilla Sky is much better than given credit for: if not for providing a really exposure of Sigur Ros, opening with Radiohead, and having songs from Red House Painters, Josh Rouse, a bizarre Cameron Diaz pop song, Beach Boys, Spiritualized, etc.
If she chooses to be, she'll be one of the actresses of my generation. Either way, she's a great actress and as I understand it she stepped away to be a mother and live her life. The poster is bizarre.
Being an ideologue =/= speaking of recurring issues. It just means your adherence to a specific solution in mind prevents you from being open to anything that doesn't fit within its parameters. It's why I'm "moderate." I could look at "conservatives" and say: "You know, the government *should* be careful with not spending too much, and you know, the government isn't very efficient so we *should* be careful with giving them more money and power." I could look at "progressives" and say: "You know – we are incredibly prosperous here, things should be better for everyone. Some corporations *are* greedy and need to be regulated." As opposed to say, for example, "I'm against a public option for healthcare because I believe in small government." Or, for example: "If there's a single payer option run entirely by our government with no exception because that's the *only* way people won't get left out." One adhering to some kind of libertarian approach, one adhering to some kind of socialistic-approach. Maybe truth is hard to find because there's little bits of it in every side of an argument.
How did any of this even come to be in the first place? How does get put under a "court-approved conservatorship?"
I mean, they're all a bunch of ideologues, whom most people aren't really fans of. That's why most of them are so predictable. They follow an ideology, which means they don't really have to think beyond it. "Here's the answer, no thinking required, I'll just regurgitate these talking points over and over..."
Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish openly against Trump. Biden is still bumbling his way forward somehow. Obama is giving teary-eyed commentary regarding the risk of losing capitalism [come on Obama, the far left openly *wants* capitalism to fall], you've got serial pervert Bill Clinton introducing folks as if all is forgiven, you've got his wife who knowingly let him most likely molest or harass women. The current President sees the end and has clearly decided to *not* go silently into the night. You've got a country that is increasingly getting shoved to the further ends of each side of the spectrum most likely from social media, television, and the internet. What's new though?
Aren't the vast amount of homeless folks mentally ill, on drugs, or a combination of both? The problem isn't homelessness, it's drug addiction and mental illness. There is money for it, it's just getting all used up in inefficient ways. There's also the problem that trying to help people who are addicted to drugs or mentally ill isn't always a matter of money.
addendum: Has has bipolar, but he's not deaf and blind. The whole thing is publicity for Kanye and an attempt to keep Trump in office, and both Kanye and Republicans are in on it.
She's making the presumption that Kanye doesn't know what Republicans are doing.
Maybe a good and simple reflection on how good an artist is how no connection to how good of a person they are.
Bernie doesn't have a dedicated team of people trying to get everyone to believe he's hip.
...and here I was just asking myself, "..what am I supposed to think about Trump and the USPS?!" and now I know. Thanks Taylor.
No – because our federal government is clearly efficient, responsible, and good-intention we should give it *more* power and *more* money.
Man I wish that 'FATHER JOHN MISTY' type was left aligned there.
Still haven't given that a listen as I just typically tune out live albums but I guess I need to give it a go.
Yeah, sometimes I think he's consciously and overtly moved on from that sound with no plan to return – but I'd love to see him kind of combine some of newer songwriting talents with some of the instruments from those albums, would love to see a return of the banjo on something. I also loved hearing the slide guitar on Carrie & Lowell and would love to hear him kind of go in a traditional/folk/roots/blues sound mixed with some of his current sonic stuff. Kind of how Radiohead let some of their Jazz-stuff slip into some of their Amnesiac/Kid A work.
I'm hoping the record after this one somehow combines his more traditional/folk/orchestral sound a la Michigan and Illinois with his newfound songwriting structures and capabilities. Something like a more dynamic and maximalist Carrie & Lowell.
What's wild is you have people upvoting your comments about someone entirely unrelated. Have you even attempted to watch any of the videos of what went on at Evergreen? I would wager that you haven't. At least research it out and watch what happened, there are videos all over youtube. The whole thing was bonkers. For the record: I don't think Peterson ever claimed to be attacked by coeds, although if you watched any of those videos, your conclusion may be different from his. Peterson supports calling trans folks by their preferred pronouns, he doesn't support a government mandating it by law.
Sufjan. is so good at being a sweet person, certainly one of his gifts. I also like this song a lot more than the first single. I think this is going to be an Age of Adz-type album that divides the fanbase a little bit.
Peterson? What Peterson are you talking about? Jordan Peterson? How's even relevant to this conversation? He had nothing to do with Evergreen.
That's right, you're the "member of academia" and teacher who jumps into ad hominems as soon as someone says anything that dares go against your hallowed views. What makes you think this is an effective form of communication among adults? Genuinely? How many people do you really think "don't want them to exist?"
I'd like to reply but I'm honestly not sure what you're trying to say, or if there's a discernible point. It's not about the "dude." It's about children taking over a college and demanding things. It was absurdity – have you watched the videos? If not, then why comment? Students demanding that white men aren't allowed to use their hands when speaking, because apparently that's patriarchal [or something].
"First of all, transphobia is still a real thing whether you think pointing it out is helpful or not." Sure it is, and I made no claims otherwise. But in a conversation with another human – if you want it to be productive and constructive, and why wouldn't you because otherwise it's a waste of your time, lobbing ad hominems at them probably isn't the best way to do it. It's just reductive. "It's a lot easier to enjoy debate for the sake of debate when nobody is debating your right to exist." Do wha...? Someone is trying to kill them? Whether a human exists or not has nothing to do with what any other human says.
Fair enough. There is no such thing as a "fair mob." Cancel culture is done by mobs. I'm being simplistic here, but there's a point.
I think NC is implying that, by definition, "cancel culture" doesn't have legitimate criticisms.
> otherwise you end up with 200 comments of people arguing about what he means and whether chomsky, louis ck, and jk rowling all meet the standard of cancelled. This is a good thing.
Uh, how? I neither like, nor dislike "trans people." I do my best to love everyone as I'd like to be loved, but to like them, I'd have to at least know them. I've met several trans folks in my lifetime, and while I never knew any of them too well, I can't think of one I didn't like. That being said, I may disagree with their opinions on trans-related things. I like debate. I like conversation. I think there is where *truth* is found. I think name calling doesn't do anything for truth – it's just become a weapon for people to use who don't want to continue conversation. It's also lazy.
Except what happened at Evergreen happened in the physical world. It was a physical manifestation of what the people on Twitter ultimately will do if they ever get an ounce of power. BuT iT's NoT ReAl.
Except that's not what happened. You're either ignorant, or intentionally leaving out the information because it doesn't fit your narrative. The students revolted against the school and quite literally staged a coup. All because an overtly leftist evolutionary biologist didn't want to kowtow to the demands of a bunch of children.
