realizing now it is a sax with the lead melody but some stabbing synth's under
it's a beautiful majestic little synth-y thing on loop; melody kinda sounds like the end of the refrain from Whole New World lol it's lit
holy shit. she has achieved a new level. this and intern are both so fucking good. unreal.
songs cool I guess but if that isn't the best album cover I've seen this year I don't even know what the fuck
I'm not sure about the technicalities of NYC neighborhood's but I'd say Other Music is NOHO/NYU/East Village before I'd say West Village. It is on East 4th street. I do work down the street. And this is a mega bummer.
First forest fire! Downloading on my phone via Spotify now....
oh my lord, how is this so good. he is the goat.
goddamn. this shit goes to 11. great performance. didn't listen to this album, what a terrible mistake
fuck I need this immediately. saw MC Tay Tay at Baby's the other week with the Cook Bros and Frazey Ford, fucking awesome show. that dude does not get enough respect. what a titan of a songwriter. also Star Wars! Yes! Really underrated all over the place. Needs more love.
there are some pretty intimate lyrics on 1989, see Out of the Woods, Clean etc
i forget how this works does blackstar not qualify for this week. cuz...
yep, they're a bit more workmanlike than those other bands, and they are way less interested in noise or unconventional songwriting. but songs like the only moment we were alone are very worthy.
holy shit this is some pyramids level shit
yep, bowery controls most of the major booking and venues in the city. the shows i've seen at T5 have really run the gamut from the hurrican katrina benefit with the super stacked bill of cults, the antlers, grizzly bear and sleigh bells (which was struggle city) to courtney barnett a few months back. the crowd for courntey was unbelievably polite and she fucking owned that shit like you wouldn't believe. like serious kurt cobain vibes from that woman.
No, Tom's not saying the question to be answered by this Premature Evaluation is if this is a multigenerational classic or not?...he's saying that's the only question remaining, since this review is deciding that it is already great.
hey FJM, do you get dm'ed dick pics on instagram?
I work in fashion so I'm 100% with Misty on this one. sorry guys lol. the editorial is sort of lame though. but all the Dries stuff is great.
Not salsa, but Whole Foods' hummus is fucking excellent. Lemon and Jalapeno are my go tos, do u fucks wit this Joshua?
dan I like how riled up your are about this but I believe you are sort of misinterpreting Tillman here. What he's trying to say is that there is a divide between the universe of popular indie music and radio pop. He even says it's blurring, BUT, that it is important for some artists to remain on the indie side because a) the artists that occupy the radio pop sphere are not usually occupied with making certain kinds of artistic statements and b) those that attempt to 'pass through' end up making concessions such that those kind of artistic statements and designs become compromised in the process of 'passing through'. That sounds pretty accurate and real to me. You may disagree about the qualities of his music but I think he's a got a pretty good pulse on the zeitgeist. This description does seem diametrically opposed to 'poptimism' or attempting to piece out and diminish the hierarchy of valuation in music criticism. But I think that it's actually not hard to imagine someone holding both viewpoints (as I guess I do); that you can appreciate pop music and even seriously listen to it while finding your own personal tastes and artistic endeavors quite different; maybe not relevant or maybe tangentially connected to that world; but that there is a fairly clear difference. I have a feeling most gummer's probably feel this way. Not sure if it was you or another commenter who said this, but I don't Tillman hates Swift or Adams at all. I think he's a music fan first and foremost, he may be uninterested or grossed about my some of Taylor Swift's musical aesthetic (as I think many Stereogum readers are) but like most of us I doubt he'd deny her talent as a songwriter and musician. He is also certainly a Ryan Adams fan; he has included Ryan Adams songs on his Spotify playlist, which by the way is really excellent and full of classics and obscure stuff, many of which are clear influences on the Misty sound or songwriting process.
Ian Cohen is actually a very good writer and music journalist, he doesn't deserve all the hate. P4K definitely uses him as the axe man sometimes. Or maybe he likes to do it, I dunno. That being said he does come across as incredibly douchey in that video.
such a bummer about the dissolve. would be pretty sad if that was a factor here. i don't even know where to read about movies anymore. any suggestions?
can't say that I'm not disappointed. Conde Nast blows, everyone involved in fashion knows those publications are absolute garbage and it's an annoyance that they are the center of gravity of that industry...hopefully P4K can maintain their vision.
dude I used to love tanlines. now i hear them on too many terrible urban outfitters esque pandora radio stations. I also somehow feel like the songs are actually just less good then when I did when it came out without even taking into account the oversaturation/bad assocation factor.
Haven't listened to this new Kelela but I'm excited, Bank Head is a fucking incredible song. Gonna go to bat for Protomartyr this week anyway, that album fucking rips. Great guitar work too.
I dunno man pretty sure Currents deserves a 9+, not sure how you calculate the .3 but I'm not mad at it. The Jason Isbel review was dumb and reductive.
music critics and historians will always wonder what happened after silent alarm. what an incredible record followed by...a slow strange descent into mediocrity and now...this. http://ionenewsone.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/gw_bush_disappoint.jpg
dude kele's been singing the same melody over the last five albums.
This is really excellent, great evolution from Under Color. For those who didn't hear their first release, No Passion All Technique I highly recommend it. Annoyingly not on Spotify. These guys also but on a great fucking show at that P4k showcase with Angel. but Viet Cong is still my postpunk aoty. This probably in second with Diat in third.
yeah structurally you could argue that the music is achieving similar things but the actual compositions are quite different. viet cong is full of electronic drums and keyboards and vocal harmonies and weird processing and epic yes-like multipart songs. this is kind of the opposite, pretty straightforward songs.
really great list, makes me super nostalgic for college, trying to learn teach myself these songs, and first discovering indie rock.
That's actually a fairly different idea although they are obviously related. One is about suffering a hyper self oriented and naive person, the other is about the very process of being made into a hyper self oriented and naive person.
Fair point, but who else is or will make music about this? I think it's a worthy exploration.
as Stephen points out in the article "For one thing, there are no known recordings of these compositions apart from prints of the film, so the new reissue necessarily includes some sound effects and snippets of dialogue. "
sounds like a slightly heavier beach fossils. awesome!
An amazingly gifted and underrated songwriter. Great piece Caitlin!
so beautiful. thank you michael! listening to maiden + nirvana in highschool got me to start playing electric guitar. was watching mastodon live at pink pop on yotuube this morning which is a hilarious and amazing video of musical prowess and awesome dudes having a good time, was super inspiring. but revisiting maiden now for the first time in a while and holy fuck, what an incredible band. I forgot how catchy and melodic this shit is, good lord. all hail.
