The full quote is actually: "I think Kesha will get to that eventually," said Wayne Coyne. "She doesn't have that sort of power now, but I think she will eventually. There is nothing wrong with blackface."
It's going to be weird when Meow The Jewels becomes a more important and revered album that Run The Jewels 2
Depends on the artist. Some artists, their mystery and myth is what makes them interesting. I don't need to relate to Burial. I'm into Mountain Goats a lot more though because of his Twitter feed.
Can we just use this space to talk about the new John Cena/Wiz Khalifa songs instead
Yeah. I don't think everyone would factor gender into the Ariel Pink remarks, but I can see why someone might. It would be hard to factor it in to the Weezer example though because there aren't a ton of examples of female songwriters telling male songwriters that their work isn't legitimate enough. The original quote is that it's "emblematic," that it represents a common relationship and perspective.
Criticism isn't, again, it's the perception of the attitude (which you can reasonably disagree with). Mindset/attitude changes the context of a lot of things. Giving a homeless person a dollar isn't bad; giving a person a dollar and thinking that you're blessing this bottom feeder with your remarkable generosity, even if it's the same action, is totally different.
It seemed pretty clear to me that the alleged misogyny is not in the criticism of Madonna but the (perceived) attitude that he was there to bolster her with legitimate songwriting?
I get the feeling this is played more as a joke to fuck with the audience.
I can see me in the bottom right!
Coachella 2009. Still one of those shows I bring up when I get to talking with people about great concert experiences. Hope whatever either of them do in the future artistically is as exciting and powerful.
It's like when Kanye West does something fun, except people get mad at Kanye and people get sad at Kozelek.
I think this is the first time I've heard a folksy dis track.
He could've just summed it up as "All you fuckin' hillbillies, shut the fuck up"
"Please welcome to the stage, Mark Kozelek!" Mark walks on-stage. "Just kidding, fuck your band." Mark walks backwards, giving the booing crowd a middle finger while grabbing his crotch.
Oof, I don't know about the idea that mosh pits themselves should be phased out. All this talk about how violent and intrusive they are is news to me, but maybe that's because I don't go to any really "hardcore" shows, just stuff with crossover appeal like Cloud Nothings and Fucked Up where there's enough lily-livered sensitive people like me there to temper things. It's never seemed like anyone was trying to hurt anyone, and for me personally it was more about just surrendering to a crowd during a really intense song. I don't think anyone should have to be subjected to it if they don't want to be part of it, but I can't imagine a Japandroids show without everyone moshing and singing. It's so essential they filmed it and made a music video.
Most of the pits I've been in have been great about keeping people safe. They catch or immediately help up people that have fallen, don't force the action into the other part of the crowd, or they clear a path for people trying to get out. It seems like people just need to learn that stage diving, especially onto sparsely populated sections made up of smaller people, is part of that etiquette.
I've just been "connecting to peers" for a while now.
Tyler the Creator + Local Morning News sounds like someone at KTLA has no idea what he's booking
For a second thought this was a new protest song
>“If you dare to call the mayor, taxes got your goat, well he don’t care. Cause you’re a millionaire, and he didn’t get your vote.” Classic Blues songwriting material!
Clearer image: http://www.signreverse.com/store/media/ss_size1/shirt.jpg I'm a fan
This is great. I remember seeing them open for Conor Oberst sometime in 2008 and you could hardly google them back then, it was weird how little they had easily available. Then they disappeared for a while, I think she was out on one of her many supporting tours? Anyway I hope they get to put out another full album soon. For some reason this has a Dirty Projectors vibe to me.
In times like this, I just take a deep breath and repeat Gabe Delahaye's words: We Should All Be So Lucky As To Find Something In This World That Makes Us Happy.
Wait, is anyone talking about Lady Gaga being coerced? I haven't even seen a comment thread that made that the central Terry Richardson issue.
Hey everyone! Check out the edge on this guy!
Jack Osborne got really good at singing.
I don't know if having a context is the same as leading. If we're having a 60 minute conversation about the NBA finals, and then I ask you if you like the San Antonio Spurs, am I leading you to say you are a Spurs fan?
Mindlessly pressed the YouTube and switched tabs. A minute into it I was like, this is exactly like the original what is he doing
Argue with them, then? I think you'll find that many of the people you _think_ are saying he doesn't have a right to do this are in actuality saying this is a dumb action on his part.
still waitin for a US west coast tour from them. Getting antsy.
You're arguing about rights and prerogative, but yeah, no one's disputing that. We're disputing whether that's not a dick move. He's absolutely allowed to be a dick, we just wish he wouldn't because he stands to benefit. I know The Eagles still sell out stadiums in Bakersfield, but if he wanted to extend that -- and avoid shutting down an entire demographic and relegating himself to being behind the glass of a museum -- then he'd recognize the opportunity here for invigoration.
Because Sheff nor Ocean are pretending that this is their original work and on reasonable person is under the impression that they wrote those songs/parts of songs. They're not taking credit for anything.
Agreed (although that number keeps getting extended by Disney) but the Carter family was around for Guthrie and all those Baptist gospels we've ripped off were certainly around to be passed and transformed too, right?
This is an interesting distinction because what makes a folk song okay to pass around other than someone started with the first pass? Like if we take his Guthrie example, he's not totally separated by hundreds of years from the Carter Family, and if their song draws from Baptist gospels, what makes those gospels less worthy of the sacrosanct treatment?
Of course you have the legal right to do something about it, and you always should, but that doesn't mean it's not a tremendously poor, short-sighted move. If Leonard Cohen wasn't so cover-able and open to such interpretations, he would've more or less faded into an artifact of music history. Instead, because he secured placement in today's cultural conversation, he got placement in media that wouldn't otherwise cover him, a reverential spot at Coachella, a successful new world tour and currency with an entirely new, young fans. It's a second wind in your career if you embrace it.
Yes, because my comment is still up there for everyone to see and no one's gong to get the two confused. And you're not charging 10 bucks to read your post.
His problem is his conception of covers replacing the original work. Like that "going to a museum and painting a mustache on a painting" -- it's like printing out a picture of a painting and drawing a mustache on that. The dude only sees the negatives of it and not the positive effect it could have in prolonging the life of his music. He really just wants it to be in a museum.
I bet they noticed Black Keys talking shit on Nickelback a couple years ago produced a lot of buzz & clicks and now they're just mining that vein of impolite popular rock stars.
