Hey, remember that time I
stood around in a farm waiting ’til 4:40 in the morning with a few thousand irately chanting, drug seizure having, bottle throwing people at Bonnaroo, waiting for Kanye to do a Glow In The Dark light show in what became broad daylight? Hoping the show would be awesome and/or present at least a word or two on the situation? And it was neither? Well good news. Kanye finally has said a word about it. 773 of them, actually. And through the CAPS LOCK!!!!! we learn a few key things. He posted it on his blog, and we are reposting it here:

I am sick of negative people who just sit around trying 2 plot my downfall… Why???? I understand if people don’t like me because I like me or if people think tight clothes look gay or people say I run my mouth to much, But this Bonnaroo thing is the worst insult I’ve ever had in my life. This is the most offended I’ve ever been… this is the maddest I ever will be. I’m typing so fucking hard I might break my fucking Mac book Air!!!!!!!! Call me any name you want…. arrogant, conceited, narcissistic, racist, metro, fag whatever you can think of…. BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN’T GIVE MY ALL! NEVER SAY I DIDN’T GIVE MY ALL! THIS SHOWS NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU TRY TO BE GOOD AT SOMETHING THERE WILL BE PEOPLE THERE TO LIE ABOUT YOU AND BRING YOU DOWN! LIKE WAYNE SAYS PLEASE DON’T SHOOT ME DOWN CAUSE I’M FLYING! I’M FUCKING HURT BY THIS ONE. ALL I CARE ABOUT ARE THE FANS. JUST SAY THIS OUT LOUD IN A ROOM FULL OF PEOPLE, “KANYE DOESN’T CARE ABOUT GIVING A GOOD PERFORMANCE.” CAN ANYONE HONESTLY SAY THAT ????????? HAS ANYONE EVEN TAKEN THE TIME TO AT LEAST DO THE MATH??? BONNAROO SHOULD HAVE RELEASED A STATEMENT IN MY DEFENSE BUT SINCE THEY HAVEN’T LET’S BREAK DOWN THE WALLS ON THIS TRUMAN SHOW AND LET YOU KNOW WHAT REALLY OCCURRED!!! FOR OVER A MONTH WE WENT BACK AND FORTH ON WETHER OR NOT WE COULD EVEN FIT MY STAGE AT THE FESTIVAL. ONE DAY THEY WOULD SAY YES… WE’D SEND THEM OUR SPECS THEN THEY THEY’D SAY OK… THEN THEY WOULD SEND SPECS BACK THAT DIDN’T FIT THE STAGE. WE WERE OBVIOUSLY DEALING WITH FUCKING IDIOTS WHO DIDN’T REALLY HAVE THE CAPACITY TO REALLY PUT ON THIS SHOW PROPERLY. THEY TRIED 2 GIVE ME A TIME SLOT WERE IT WAS STILL LIGHT OUTSIDE … I HAVE A FUCKING LIGHT SHOW DUMB ASS, IT’S NOT CALLED GLOW IN THE DARK FOR NO REASON SQUID BRAINS! MY PEOPLE WORKED OUT A COMPROMISED STAGE PLOT AND A 3AM TIME SLOT AND I AGREED. FAST FOWARD TO THE DAY OF THE SHOW. MY PRODUCTION MANAGER TRIED TO LOAD IN FOR 24 HOURS BEFORE I WENT ON STAGE BUT THE FESTIVAL WOULDN’T ALLOW US TO DO ANYTHING UNTILL PEARL JAM LEFT THE STAGE. PEARL JAM ENDED ONE HOUR
LATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT THAT POINT WE’RE RACING AGAINST THE SUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AT 4:20AM DON COMES BACK 2 THE BUS AND TELLS ME, ” IT WOULD TAKE 45 MORE MINUTES TO PUT ALL YOUR PYRO IN!” I SAY I HAVE TO GET OUT THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE . I HIT THE STAGE AND PEOPLE HAD BEEN THROWING SHIT ON THE STAGE AND HAD ACTUALLY HIT THE JANE SCREEN WITH, I GUESS BOTTLES OR SOMETHING AND HAD BROKEN MY FUCKING SCREEN. REMEMBER WHEN YOU WERE A SHORTY AND WATER WOULD HIT THE TV?????? WHEN I GOT 2 “THROUGH THE WIRE” I STEPPED ON THE FRONT PART OF MY STAGE AND THERE WAS SO MUCH LIQUID ON THE STAGE I COULDN’T MOVE WITHOUT SLIPPING. I HAD TO ADJUST MY WHOLE PERFORMANCE STYLE BECAUSE OF IT. A FEW MORE SONGS IN AND THE SONG WAS ON IT’S WAY UP.. I CUT A FEW SONGS FROM THE SET BECAUSE I WANTED PEOPLE 2 EXPERIENCE STRONGER WHILE THERE WAS STILL SOME DARKNESS TO PERFORM IT IN. I’VE STRUGGLED WITH STRONGER FROM IT’S CONCEPTION. REMEMBER LAST SUMMER WHEN I CANCELED SOME TV APPEARANCES. IT WAS BECAUSE I DIDN’T WANT TO PERFORM STRONGER IN THE DAYTIME. ANYONE WHO CAME TO THE GLOW TOUR CAN UNDERSTAND WHY I WANTED PEOPLE TO SEE IT PROPERLY. IT BROKE MY HEART THAT I COULDN’T GIVE THESE FANS STRONGER IN IT’S GREATEST FORM… BY THE TIME I GOT TO STRONGER IT WAS DAYTIME AND IT BROKE MY HEART. I’M SORRY TO EVERYONE THAT I DIDN’T HAVE THE ABILITY 2 GIVE THE PERFORMANCE I WANTED TO. I’M SORRY… SOMETIMES I GO 2, 3 DAYS W/O SLEEP WORKING ON MY PERFORMANCE… I HAVE TO ICE MY KNEES AFTER EVERY SHOW AND THEY HURT WHEN I WALK THROUGH THE AIRPORT… HAVING AN EXPENSIVE STAGE CUTS MY PAYDAY IN HALF… CALL ME WHAT YOU WANT BUT NEVER SAY I DIDN’T GIVE MY ALL!!!

Nobody’s saying you didn’t give it your all, Kanye, and props for making me sympathize with you here. When my post went up that day, I acknowledged Pearl Jam being late, and also freely admitted “he was totally invested in each dance move, every lyric, and all the sorta cringy interactions with Jane The Spaceship.” He was trying, and in the daylight, he looked like a ham (truth). Of course darkness would have been a good choice, and of course Kanye didn’t intend to have the sunrise over him. Even assuming certain things to be out of his hands, though, it was disappointing not to get an apology, or at least an acknowledgment of the show’s lateness and appreciation for us sticking around. At the time I said “That’s why I just wish he could have deviated from the script, even for like 20 seconds, just at the end, to acknowledge the moment: ’Thanks for staying up with me and watching the sunrise’ would have been nice.’”

Thing is we don’t even get that, here. Instead we get something so much more awesome: Umm, “squid brains”? You do realize that the only thing I’m gonna be saying more than squid brains for the next month is “I’m typing so fucking hard I might break my fucking Mac book Air!!!!!!!!,” right? Even though I don’t have a Macbook Air? These are the best lexicon additions in a long while. You made it right in your own way Kanye. Everybody, burn your Fuck Kanye West shirts. He almost broke his Macbook Air for you.

“I’m typing so fucking hard I might break my fucking Mac book Air!!!!!!!!”

Seriously…he actually bought into Steve Job’s joke? Because that’s the only logical explaination I have for seeing why it even exists.

  2. He sounds sincere I guess. It is nice to see a formal apology.
Maybe I won’t skip his show at lolla after all.

  3. Plus, the Digg screengrab… Ha.
Kanye is aware of all Internet traditions.

  4. it’s pretty unfortunate the way shit went down at ‘roo, but in all honesty, his stage props in a well lit area did take atleast an hour to put up in a regular arena…could you imagine having to deal with a later set time and other elements in hot ass tennessee (sp) … i’m not trying to make up excuses for the guy, but his apology does sound pretty genuine….

  5. we all know he’s the biggest name dropper, ever….so why does it come as any surprise ?

  6. sammy  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

I, too, will be adding “squid brains” to my catalog of insults, barbs, and witty retorts.

  7. Mrs. Featherbottom  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 +2

Kanye is too busy wearing his own rectum as a ski mask to notice that only those of the same self-imposed blindness care to waste their time with him.
And blaming everything on the lights and his “Lite Brite Tour”?! Calling Bonnaroo engineers “fucking idiots”?!
158 artists and no one else had trouble with those “idiots”.
And does an real MC even need a light show? What happened to a beat and a mic?

    • are you a bonnaroo engineer? or are you just in every other band that played bonnaroo to know that no one else had a problem?

      • I am a Bonnaroo engineer, and Mrs. Featherbottom is absolutely right! While sure, every band is going to have it’s problems, but nothing like this! Standard protocol in fact is to set up a majority of the headliner’s light gear before even the first show on the main stage of that particular day. It is a 100% cop out that kanye tried to load in and wasn’t allowed. The truth is he was scheduled to play on the “Which Stage” but due to his enormous ego, he made a demand to be moved to the main stage! He also demanded that NO OTHER SETS COULD BE GOING ON! Now, as a sound engineer or stagehand that’s pretty much your worst nightmare. Think about it, I assure you that probably the majority of the time spent was breaking down whatever gear had already been set up on the “Which Stage” and moving it hundreds of yards away. I can absolutely guarantee you that NO OTHER band, engineer, or stagehand has ever had to deal with a problem of that caliber in Bonnaroo history. And as far as the promoters of the festival not doing their jobs, and “not having the capacity to put on this level of show”!!!??? WHAT!!!?? We’re talking about AC Entertainment (Ashley Capps), and Superfly Productions (Coran Capshaw) two of THE BIGGEST and most reputable names in the music industry! I’m sorry but I don’t see it as mere coincidence that everyone does their jobs to meet set-up deadlines, start shows on time, and achieve fan satisfaction for every show that has gone through Bonnaroo for 9 years. Oh…… just except this one, that was totally Bonnaroo’s fault. Whatever Kanye, at least the one good thing to come out of it is that we know for a fact you won’t ever be gracing us with your selfish presence again at the Roo!

  8. So genuine that he says in one post that he both wasn’t capable of giving his best AND that he always gives his best.

No Kanye! Don’t cut your payday in half!

    kanye, my show was awesome.

    you blow nuts.

  13. Jonathon  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

    my personal favorite line:

LET’S BREAK DOWN THE WALLS ON THIS TRUMAN SHOW

  14. haris pilton  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

KANYE DOESN’T CARE ABOUT GIVING A GOOD PERFORMANCE!

  15. I’m glad he at least realizes how much of a disaster it was. This is the first time the Bonnaroo crowd have ever been angry about a show. But he still doesn’t understand that if he said any kind of apology at the show then everything would be fine.

  16. Lindsay  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

Kanye West doesn’t like white people.

  19. Sean Jean  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

Aren’t squids supposedly one of the most intelligent wild animals on the planet? A better choice would have been “STARFISH BRAINS” or “LIZARD BRAINS”

  20. G. W. Bush  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

Bonnaroo doesn’t care about black people.

  21. Is it just me, or is he asking for an apology more than he is giving one?

  22. diego  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

I also like that he quotes the Lil Wayne song that he produced.

  23. As much as a dislike caps, reading them actually makes it louder in my head, why is that?

  24. Black Jesus  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

Kanye claims to be Catholic but he worships himself. Doesn’t make sense.

  25. Colin  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

First of all, I’m a big Kanye apologist. I think he’s a great talent and comes from the right place as an artist and I honestly don’t mind the cocky swagger aspect of his personality/music because I’ve always liked that part of pop/rock/hip-hop music. I think what might be the problem is here is just that some people turn the blinders on when they get hurt and start throwing up defense mechanisms i.e. all the lashing out like people didn’t say he didn’t give his all instead of looking at what’s really going on with the situation. From what I’ve read, people in general, haven’t been saying that he didn’t try to give his all or put on a good performance, what they’ve said was that Kanye came out too late, didn’t acknowledge it (which might have actually cancelled out the majority of the post concert bitching-turning it from a bitter rift into a minorly annoyed shrug), and finally, that the show didn’t live up in the sunlight. I saw the show in Portland and that fucker lives up and Kanye certainly put his all into it. In fact, I wish more artists were going for it as much as Kanye. In this case though, I’m sure that its probably hard for him and while I do feel for his hurt about the situation, the fan reaction and not being able to present his vision correctly, I really wish that he would look at what the people are really saying and respond to that.

  26. grace6697  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

this doesn’t make the hurt go away.

  27. Black SUnshine  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

“HAVING AN EXPENSIVE STAGE CUTS MY PAYDAY IN HALF… ”
SO, I have just one question: WHY DO IT???

I understand he wants us to have an extra special performance, but dang. Had he actually known this would happen (and you can’t be too careful), the Glow In the Dark thing would have been out of the question for him. THe best idea is to work with the time and just give the performance. The people who came would have been happy for that, instead of glow in the dark.

  28. kanye’s show in chicago was pretty sick. i understand why he wouldn’t want to perform something less impressive when he’s put so much effort into this tour. i sincerely believe that he’s a hard working artist and i respect him, even though he is a douche most of the time. i think his ridiculous blog post is actually legit.

  29. CEF  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

I’m not a Kanye fan and although I was at the ‘Roo, I went back to my campsite after PJ tore it up and waited to hear Kanye get on. I didn’t care that I missed him when he finally went on at 4:30 or whatever. I think three things should have happened:
    1. ‘Roo should have never booked him given that his whole tour depends on an elaborate stage and light show and that can be very difficult to pull off at a festival given the small window of set up times
    2. Kanye should have altered his show for the festival or declined the invite. I know its tough to turn down money or the chance to build a larger fan base especially considering that 90% of the Metallica fans there probably weren’t Kanye fans before and putting on a good show could have maybe grabbed him some more fans. But he should have anticipated the difficulties in translating a show like his from a headlining arena tour to a 3 am ‘Roo slot.
    3. They needed to give more time between PJ and Kanye. Everyone there knew PJ would play late, that is what they do at this point in their career, play 30 minute long 2.5 to 3 hour sets.

So I think there is enough blame to go around and Kanye shouldn’t shoulder it all.

  30. Forest  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

I can understand Kanye’s point. It must be hard work to give his audiences “Stronger”, especially when delivering lyrics like this:

You should be honored by my lateness /
That I would even show up to this fake shit

    SQUID BRAIN!!!

  31. i think the post was funny. and the squid brains part …oh so hilarious. i think it would have been less of a big deal if he didn’t write 75% of his rant in caps. its like “LOOK GUYS, LOOK AT MY RANT!! SQUID BRAINS! MY MAC CAN GO TO HELL WHILE I WRITE THIS!” so elementary school.

  32. Nickolas.  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

Seriously…Kanye’s a punk. Of course it wasn’t his fault…I didn’t need him to blog about it to know that’s what he was going to say. Kanye you are overrated…have always been overrated…and blaming the organizers of the festival that brought big time festivals back to the US is just silly. For nearly this entire decade the people at Bonnaroo have put on one of the most large scale and music fan friendly events of each summer, and Kanye if you take so much pride in your “show” (or gimmicks, whatever) you’ll scrap all the extra bullshit that doesn’t fit on the stage and just go out on stage and lay it down hard. Shut up and make beats for Weezy…that’s all we need from you.

  33. Aaron  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

kanye just josh homme’d us all

  34. eric  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

    Weezy > Kanye

Kanye probably reads these blogs cause he’s such a douche. Hey Kanye, its not even close.

  35. logan  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

yea why didn’t he just mention some of that at the concert? my fav quote: “THERE WAS SO MUCH LIQUID ON THE STAGE I COULDN’T MOVE WITHOUT SLIPPING. I HAD TO ADJUST MY WHOLE PERFORMANCE STYLE BECAUSE OF IT.” waaah the stage was wet.. boo hoo.

  36. “Good Morning” just came on my Pandora as I was reading these comments, and it made me think. Of all the things you can call him, ‘overrated’ is not one of them.

  37. Maybe Kanye was recently bitten by a vampire and can’t perform in the light now? I know he’s been working on this show for a long time and it’s hard to just last minute change your stage show, but seriously, he should’ve been able to perform without the crazy light show. And of course his people weren’t allowed to set up all day! Other people are using that stage!
Frankly, I’d rather see Pearl Jam than Kanye anyway.

  38. bobbalooo  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

Kanye’s the man, he can do this

  39. wheresarah  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

That show was awesome. Once the sun began to rise, you could see how it simply HAD to be performed in the dark. I enjoyed it, save all the FUCKING TERRIBLE WHITE FRAT BOY/REDNECKS TRYING TO DANCE HIP-HOP. I mean jesus shit!!! What is wrong with you people? There are no drugs in the world to excuse that fucktardery. It was so embarrassing, on behalf of all white people decent enough to spare those around them from seeing such horrible displays of lameness.
Back to the point… I enjoyed the show very much. But maybe that’s because I was laying in my tent, waiting to hear it start… and finally headed out at about 4:20 (ha!) to see what the hell was going on… and then it started. I definitely agree with amrit… a simple “thanks for waiting” would have gone miles.

  40. eric  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

break down the walls on this truman show,

    ahh,

lets all love kanye west again

I have a friend who I have affectionately refered to as squid guts for some 10 yrs now. The reasoning being her last name is Kalomares which when drunk and high sounds like Calamari, and, well, I guess it is now apparent how big of a tool I am :-(

  43. Señor calamar  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

Squid brains? I resent that! No me desprecies.

  44. kwj  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

“Kanye probably reads these blogs cause he’s such a douche.”

i wonder what that makes the people who write in them….

  45. pangea  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2008 0

Yo check this out Kanye, turns out squid’s brains ain’t so lackluster:

Smart squid may unlock the secret of how animals and people learn

    Squid.

The only time most of us think about this strange-looking sea creature is when it is served grilled, fried or basted in its own ink.

But the lowly squid is actually an intelligent invertebrate capable of learning complex behavior at a very young age.

A new study reveals that newborn squid actually learn through the process of trial and error, much like humans do, and that these early-life experiences can physically change a squid’s nervous system in ways that may be permanent.

I really thought Kanye’s last album was total shit. He has jumped the shark. that’s why he’s so bitter. he knows he’s less talented than he was 2 years ago. too many drugs, too much porno

  46. I vote “Squid Brains” for insult of the year.

  47. JAHWA!!!!  |   Posted on Jun 26th, 2008 0

THAT FUCKER DID THE SAME SHIT @ COACHELLA IN ’06 AND HE DIDN’T HAVE SOME FUCKIN’ WACKED OUT BULLSHIT SET BAK THEN… LOOKS LIKE SOME HABITS ARE HARD TO BREAK THERE, AREN’T THEY KANYE?

  48. Max Thrax  |   Posted on Jun 26th, 2008 0

His explanation/excuse sounds feasible. Bottom line: Rap live is just a guy pacing back and forth and a light show doesn’t change that.

  49. You guys are SQUID BRAINS! My god this did not help his situation at all…He needs to acknowledge the real problem…The fact that he did not address his audience/fans during the performance…People would have respected him more if he would have shown a little sympathy and compassion

He presents a number of sorry excuses…I assume he makes a few valid points, but come on!!…This is just a whiny rant, forcefully typed in ALL CAPS on a MAC BOOK AIR…

I loved the comment addressing the reason why he couldn’t perform “STRONGER in its greatest form”…The heart wrenching ironic verse:

“You should be honored by my lateness /
That I would even show up to this fake shit”

Oh the irony…Kanye keeps trippin’ over his ego… His vision is obstructed by absurd and impractical sunglasses…Open the blinds ‘Ye…Show some compassion for your fans before you loose them all…Lupe and Common, here I come…

  50. Finally. Thank you.

Kanye did indeed Josh Homme us all.
