Phoenix - "Trying To Be Cool" video

“Trying To Be Cool” is the second single from Phoenix’s new album Bankrupt! (following “Entertainment“), and its new video, helmed by the directing team CANADA and produced by the Creators Project, is a total goofball triumph. It starts out as a fairly normal live-in-studio club, but then things keep happening: A baboon sits in an office chair, bubbles blow past, Thomas Mars nonchalantly shows off apparently-ridiculous ping-pong skills. And then things escalate. Nothing has anything to do with anything else, but the end result is a giddy blast of non-sequitur energy. In filming the live video, two film crews swapped shots every 25 seconds, trying to outdo one another each time. Watch:

Bankrupt! is out now on Glassnote.

  1. I know how Tom rolls so there is no chance of this happening, but this video should be higher on the weeks top videos than the Ciara video.

  2. This gave me a very OK Go vibe, which is not a bad thing!

  3. They succeeded. That was cool.

  4. This was fucking awesome

  5. this should be called Trying to be The Strokes

  6. Nice Lucifer’s rising jacket

  7. Bankrupt! sounds nothing like The Strokes. I don’t think they do since It’s Never Been Like That.
    This video is kinda Gondry-esque.

  8. Seems like their career is over in America, other than the Coachella booking based on the strength of those 2 old hits they had. I wonder if this passes for rock and roll in France.
