Captain Murphy – “Between Villains” (Feat. Viktor Vaughn, Earl Sweatshirt, & Thundercat)

By Tom Breihan / August 16, 2013 - 11:16 am

The latest track in this summer’s Adult Swim Singles Series is called “Between Villains,” and it features a murderer’s row of rap-friendly astral travelers: Bass-music space cadet Flying Lotus (in his rapping Captain Murphy guise), masked rap enigma DOOM (in his tough-guy Viktor Vaughn guise), insanely gifted Odd Future introvert Earl Sweatshirt, and soul-jazz singer and bass virtuoso Thundercat. It’s a sequel of sorts to “Between Friends,” the Earl Sweatshirt/Flying Lotus Adult Swim track from last year, the one that first introduced the Captain Murphy character. That’s a lot of talent on one song, but “Between Villains” works more as a deep-nod headphones piece than as a thrown-together stunt-cast blockbuster. Listen below.
