eXquire – “Cherry Raindrops” Video (Stereogum Premiere)

I’ve exalted eXquire’s — he’s dropped the “Mr. Muthafuckin'” — Kismet twice on this site this year, making it #1 on my honorable mentions when we compiled our Top 25 Albums Of The 2013 So Far list and then subsequently giving it a Mixtape Of The Week nod. For all the sonically-immersive and narratively-precise material on the tape, “Cherry Raindrops” remains one of my favorites in the collection. As I said in my MOTW review, “[track producer] Constrobuz has built a landscape for eX to journey across, from new romantic bliss into a gloomy, nebulous end. It’s their best work together on the tape, from the gauzy production to quips like ‘not some esoteric shit/ but you could be my Oshun.'” And in line with eX’s propensity for storytelling, the video plays out much like the song. But instead of making his own version of Future’s courtship clip for “Turn Out The Lights,” it’s rooted in less-glossy reality, down to the relationship-consummation under black light and Jimi Hendrix posters. It’s eX’s faith (or, perhaps, lack-thereof) in the truth that makes him one of the best (and most underrated) MCs doing it right now. Watch the Adam Roberts & the Black Pack-directed video for “Cherry Raindrops” below.
