Charlotte Gainsbourg Hey Joe

Controversial director Lars von Trier and indie darling actress/singer Charlotte Gainsbourg have one of the creepier director/actress relationships; they teamed up for the apocalyptic Melancholia and next year’s hypersexed Nymphomaniac. For the latter, Gainsbourg has recorded a cover of the rock standard “Hey Joe” (popularized by the Jimi Hendrix Experience on their landmark debut Are You Experienced) with production by Beck. It’s a breathy, hauntingly ominous take that nonetheless retains the song’s bluesy swagger, and you can definitely hear the Beck in those bass parts and choral flourishes. Listen below.

Nymphomaniac will be released in two parts in the U.S. on 3/21 and 4/18. The “Hey Joe” recording gets digital release 12/16 via Because/Elektra.

  1. Great song! FYI Melancholia was not the genital mutilation film, that was AntiChrist, Melancholia was the one where the world ends twice :)

  2. Awsome Song !

  3. worth noting that Joe is the name of her character in the film.

  4. Jimi was covering the song too. FYI the original is “The Leaves – Hey Joe, Where You Gonna Go”

  5. Charlotte Gainsbourg is incredibly overrated and untalented, both as an actress and singer.
