Firefly Music Festival

Well, now we know three of the 40. The reunited OutKast have pledged to play more than 40 music festivals this summer, and now Delware’s Firefly Music Festival follows Coachella and Governors Ball as the third of those festivals. The festival comes to Dover International Speedway 6/19-22, and OutKast will join perennial rock-fest bill-toppers Foo Fighters and Jack Johnson as headliners. The undercard includes a lot of crap like Imagine Dragons and the Lumineers, but it also has Arctic Monkeys, Tegan & Sara, Weezer, Chance The Rapper, Band Of Horses, Sky Ferreira, Blood Orange, Iron & Wine, Sleigh Bells, Phosphorescent, A-Trak, White Denim, Vic Mensa, Sam Smith, and many others. You’ll find all the details here.

  1. Outkast would be awesome, but you can see them at any festival this summer apparently. Foo Fighters would also be cool, but there’s hardly anything good in the smaller bands. I counted 10 bands I’d be willing to pay to see (Not including Foo Fighters and Outkast) and most of them are bands that would cost less than $20 to see on tour.

    • I think the days of festivals getting an exclusive headliner are over. You might see something different between the festivals that happen in early spring and the ones that happen in late summer / early fall based around new albums, but that’s about it. Coachella knows this, which is why they’re supposed to start having a fall version come 2015.

      • Michael’s right – what we’re seeing now is, instead of a traveling tour like old Lolla, Warped Tour, etc., we’re seeing localized festivals draw the same 20-30 bands that are touring at the time. For a country the size of the US, I don’t really mind this as it’s hard to expect someone to fly to different festivals in order to catch certain acts and pay all the money required to do so. England & Europe are different, which is why you see different headliners at T in the Park vs. Reading or V Festival or Glastonbury.

In the aggregate, it festivals seem to be becoming very homogenized, but I think that’s just what ends up happening when people all over the country want to see similar acts or these acts are all touring at the same time.

  2. Between this and the Coachella poster, I never knew MS MR were so bigger font-worthy even from the buzzy / marketing standpoint? Here, they’re even above Sky Ferreira here and I’d figure Sky would be the bigger draw.

    • As much press as Sky gets. has she had any traction on the pop charts? (I don’t know, I’m asking.) I know that MS MR has in fact done OK on the “Alternative Rock” charts.

  3. So Outkast will obviously be playing Bonnaroo as well, my question is who will the other “headliners” be? Arcade Fire is trekking through Europe at that time. Will they bring back Springsteen or some other “Dad Rock”? I’m predicting Prince…which would be awesome.

    Any thoughts?
