French For Rabbits – “Woke Up To A Storm” (Stereogum Premiere)

New Zealand dream-pop duo French For Rabbits signed to Lefse for their debut album Spirits, though they’ve been all over their homeland and Europe, where they’ll return this fall. Despite its title, “Woke Up To A Storm” begins in an eerie calm before blooming into something like a classic piano-pop song under all those ethereal layers. Ghosts of Beach House haunt the fringes, and there’s a jazzy Norah Jones feel to the gently gliding song’s graceful landing. But French For Rabbits sound artsier and more elusive than those artists; their music’s beating heart is often shrouded by atmospherics and mystique, and they seem to operate under the rightful assumption that a well-placed whisper can be as powerful as dramatically belting it out.
