Aretha Franklin Sings The Great Diva Classics

You can make a pretty strong case that Aretha Franklin is the strongest female pop singer — or, hell, the strongest pop singer of any gender — of all time. And on her new album Aretha Franklin Takes On The Great Diva Classics, she takes on some of the best-known songs of peers and competitors like Etta James, Gladys Knight, and Barbra Streisand, as well as those of descendants like Alicia Keys and Sinéad O’Connor. (There is an Aretha Franklin version of “Nothing Compares 2 U” out there somewhere, and I cannot wait to hear it.) Franklin worked on the album with André 3000 and Babyface, and the first single is a volcanic version of Adele’s world-conquering “Rolling In The Deep.” Aretha sings the living hell out of it, the arrangement mostly keeps the tension of the original, and a bit of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” comes in at the end. It’s good stuff. Listen to it and check out the album’s tracklist below.
