Larry Gus – “NP-Complete” (Stereogum Premiere)

Long after the end of LCD Soundsystem, DFA continues to release odd, inventive records with roots in dance, punk, and experimental rock. The latest such instance is Larry Gus’ new Proust-misquoting album I Need New Eyes. Gus (aka Greek computer programmer Panagiotis Melidis) makes undefinable rhythmic art music, and “NP-Complete” is one great example of his unique skill set. The thing just rumbles with all sorts of erratic percussion, violent stabs of bass and keyboard, haunting high-pitched vocal melodies, and all manner of sonic splatter. It’s polyrhythmic and psychedelic, visceral and smart — like what David Bowie might have come up with if he’d made Low in Africa instead of Europe. Let it batter you back and forth below.

I Need New Eyes is out 10/2 on DFA. Pre-order it digitally from iTunes or on CD and colored vinyl from the label.
