The release date for Nosebleed Weekend, Atlanta garage punks the Coathangers’ fifth album, is approaching quickly. They’ve already shared the cutting, rhythmic title track, and today they offer the followup “Squeeki Tiki.” The trio has been rocking for a strong decade now, and it’s clear they are comfortable in their sound and know exactly who they are as a band. But that doesn’t keep them from getting inventive and having some unbridled fun on the track. From the outset they harmonize: “You can have it/ I don’t want that shit/ It’s just a bad memory of what I did.” Right then and there you know it’s one of those relationship anthems that’s going to make you happy in your singledom, or that you store on a breakup playlist if you’re as cynical as I am. Throw in the fact that they manage to make something cool out of those annoying-ass dog squeak toys sans corniness despite it being high in the mix over some shoegazing freneticism, and you’ve got a quick, infectious hit of empowerment. The only way this song could get better is if that chew toy belongs to an actual ex and she got to keep the dog. That would be priceless. Check it out.
