Mikael Jorgensen Debuts His Rancho Electro Project With Graph Rabbit (Stereogum Premiere)

Best known as the keyboardist for Wilco, Mikael Jorgensen has played with a number of bands including Quindar and Jorgensen/O’Keeffe over the years. Now he’s revealing Rancho Electro, a new music video series that sees an artist write and arrange a new song with Jorgensen at his studio in Ojai, California. Once the song is written, Jorgensen and his collaborator(s) venture to a “wild” nearby location to record and film a live performance of the song.

The first installment of Rancho Electro comes in the form of “Salt Fires,” a collaboration with his Butterscotch Records labelmates Graph Rabbit shot during the West Coast leg go their recent US tour. The track weaves together Austin Donohue’s delicate falsetto and intricate acoustic guitar, Shy Kedmi’s circular metallophone patterns, and Jorgensen’s distorted synth bass until it all collapses upon itself in the most beautiful way. The video was shot in the mountains above Jorgensen’s studio in Ojai and sees the three performing “Salt Fires” somewhat precariously on the edge of a windy cliff overlooking a massive valley. Check it out below.

Butterscotch Records will be releasing each Rancho Electro single alongside the videos, with the goal to create limited edition Rancho Electro LPs as the catalog of singles continues to grow.
