Boss Hog were among the most mysterious, fascinating bands on the ’90s scuzz-rock circuit. Frontwoman Cristina Martinez posed for album covers and sometimes even performed naked. Jon Spencer, her husband and former Pussy Galore bandmate, held down supporting-actor duties even as his Jon Spencer Blues Explosion was blowing up. And together, they pounded out a nasty junk-blues groove more charismatic than what most of their noise-gargling contemporaries could manage. So it’s cool that Boss Hog are coming back later this spring with Brood X, their first album in 17 years.
