Delorean (True Panther Sounds Showcase @ Ms. Bea's)

Celebrating the first few minutes of my birthday at the ever-excellent True Panther Sounds imprint’s showcase at Ms. Bea’s in Austin was just one of those moments — midnight struck, my phone lit up with loving texts, Tanlines bathed the crowd in one of their Ibiza-inflected synth-and-percussion vamps, I was composed of 100% pure endorphin (8% alcohol by volume).  That “Real Life” kickstarted a blissed-out dance-party that culminated in an unforgettable 2AM set (personally, though others with more critical ears seemed to agree) from Spain’s Delorean, outdoors on a backlot peppered with people-surfing and pot smoke. The outfit performed from their excellent 2009 EP Ayrton Senna, as at the Delancey during CMJ, but this set also teased their forthcoming True Panther full-length Subiza, so named after the Spanish town that hosted its recording process. Great album, great album name: properly evocative of Delorean’s sound, taking club music outdoors into a more balmy, colorfully vibrant blend of textured electronics and beats, day-dreamy processed vocals, and bright rhythms. They sing in English, though on “Stay Close,” the album’s first listen and opening track, the sunny romance is all in the instrumental mesh. There’s a video for it, too, and it’s just as beached out and colorful as you’d expect.

And that goes into “Real Love,” which is a jam. We don’t have that, but we do have the “Stay Close” video:

Subiza is out digitally 4/20 and physically 6/8 via True Panther Sounds/Matador in the States, and Spain/Portgual/Mexico via Mushroom Pillow. If you pre-order you’ll get an instant download of the record. Sweet.

Plenty of chances to catch them (all with Miike Snow), don’t sleep:

  1. yes! this album is a perfect follow-up to their ep and for warm sunny weather. makes me think of panda bear at times but much more poppy and joyous!

  2. Was it your birthday last week? ;)

This was indeed one of the most memorable, and foggiest, SXSW sets.

  3. While the world really needs another electronic album, any news on Dolorean’s new album?
