We often post about literacy charity 826’s great music fundraisers (LCD Soundsystem DJing the 826NYC prom, their Revenge Of The Bookeaters shows). The group’s workshops (and storefronts — I used to volunteer at 826NYC’s adorable Superhero store) are also worth talking about, even if you don’t have kids. Here 826LA brought both together, releasing the previously reported fundraiser CD made of songs written by students in their songwriting workshop. The CD, titled Chickens In Love has covers of the kids’ songs by artists like She & Him, Cold War Kids, Tim & Eric, Crystal Antlers, and Dum Dum Girls, but the best track from the album may be Fionna Apple’s cover with Jon Brion. The Gummy Bears’s “So Sleepy” has Arcade Fire-like lyrics (“I’m so sleepy, but it’s not my bedtime / We got bells / The bells, the bells keep me awake”), and a clanging rhythm. Apple and Brion transform the song into a jumpy, sweet anti-lullaby. Listen at 826LA’s Chickens In Love Facebook page, where you can stream the entire album.
