Was three years too long to wait for a new Jimmy Eat World LP? Or too little? Tough to say on the little we’ve heard from it, but the J.E.W. crew have been a busy-touring bunch of late, hitting far away lands in prep for the launch of Chase This Light, out this fall on Interscope. Butch Vig is on production, and he says the record is “quite eclectic. There are three or four songs that sound like classic Jimmy Eat World, with angular, razor-sharp guitars. There are a couple that are a lot more dreamy, and some that are very groove-acious.” Guess the first single, “Big Casino,” falls somewhere between those razor-sharp guitars and groove-aciousness. Though Butch needed to throw radio pop-rock-y in there. You can listen to some of the track at MySpace. (And apparently JIm’s currently listening to Kala).

Yeah, pretty shitty how it turns into a weird commercial for the record half way through. To console yourself, remember the good times…

…or buy “Big Casino” at iTunes. Chase This Light is out 10/16. J.E.W. have a bunch of southwest and west coast dates (along with a couple in Canada) coming up this fall, check the dates after the j.

UPDATE: No commercial if you stream it here (thanks Greg!).

I’ve always had a soft spot for these guys (ducks)… But seriously, what type of chicken-shit move is that not to post a full song without voice-over on MySpace? Jimmy Eat World is exactly the type of band that needs word of mouth among younger kids to sell albums (compare how their last album sold [poorly] compared to the one before [platinum]). Stupid, paranoid steps like this one to appease your label aren’t gonna win you any fans.

I really, really loved the “Bleed American” album. So much so that I shortly thereafter bought all of their other stuff expecting it to be equally great. It was not. So…I figured they must have just been hitting their stride so I bought “Futures” when it came out. Garbage. I guess even the blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.

  3. my god that commercial is creepy and terrible.

they used to be my favorite band, and Clarity is still an album I rather love, but…agh! what a happened?!

This song is “Lucky Denver Mint”? I am a bit confused. Did I miss something?

I loved ‘Clarity’ and ‘Static Prevails’. And ‘Bleed American’ was alright. I lost interest after that. I really didn’t like “The Middle”. I was shocked when I found it was the single that made them popular. It was one of the more boring songs on the album from my point of view.

Not too interested in what they do now. They still send me newsletters though, but they are deleted as soon as they arive.

J.E.W. leader looks like a chunky matt bellamy… am i alone in saying that? in a few shots in that music video it’s like seeing matt eat a few too many microwavable burritos.

Non-athletic types getting their asses handed to them by jocks. Why does this band feel this home movie is so much different than all their others where jocks beat them up?

    hahaha, jew crew…

sigh. how i miss old JEW. ‘lucky denver mint’ is such a great song.

I too harbour a soft spot for Jimmy Eat World. I even bought ‘Futures’, although I can’t say I listened to it much. I might give this record a miss though.

  11. Miguel  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2007 0

Futures had a few good tracks… but a lot of in between.

I’ll check out the new record… but my expectations aren’t too high. Jimmy Eat World is one of those bands I’ll always like… but you know, music taste changes. ADD is also a big factor.

Bums me out… this band used to be good.

everyone loves jimmy eat world. a good handful might comment on how clarity was their best album, but you still have to love them. they have been making solid music for an eternity.

  15. Brian  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2007 0

wow, i was never really into their older stuff, and after that video i dont think that has changed. that sucked. as much as people like to make fun of their new stuff (like cool people do to EVERY band) i will take their two new albums over the older stuff any time. Pain is a classic song.

  16. Greg  |   Posted on Aug 28th, 2007 0

They’re streaming the full song on their website (jimmyeatworld.com of course).

I bought Bleed American on a whim the day it came out without knowing a thing about the band. Turned out to be a pretty good move on my part. Still go back and forth between whether i prefer that one or Clarity. Didn’t go as crazy for Futures, but it’s solid and has some great tracks (especially 23). So far this new song isn’t wowing me, but i’m still eager to hear the rest of the album.

  17. oh shit……..clarity was so good………..

before i read too closely, i thought lucky denver mint was the new single…like…8 years too late…

still have a soft spot for these guys.

“Futures” is their best album, hands down [Dashboard Confessional].

  19. Jonny Q  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2007 0

    Stupid ass J.E.W.

  20. Casey  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2007 0

Clarity is their best album. I hope this new one sounds more like that one! I did see them in Dallas a few weeks back and it was incredible. They do put on a kick-ass live show so check them out if you can!

  21. yo  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2007 0

Aww, I love ‘Lucky Denver Mint’ and all of ‘Clarity’ for that matter. Such sweet melodrama.

I never realized how much that video is sort of a nice companion piece to that of their old boys in the promise ring.

  22. i admire jim adkins for having the same hairstyle for a long time, a hairstyle which is a hilarious kind of ‘mom-friendly’ approximation of a hairstyle that was popular about 12 or 15 years ago. the music may have gotten boring not long after clarity, true, but there is still much to appreciate in the hair. there are times to take risks, and there are times to stick with what works. in hair at least, jim adkins has made the right decision.

where did all these emo kids come from?
    seriously

  24. oh.  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2007 0

I agree with everything said here.

Goodbye Sky Harbor still blows my ass out.

  25. interocitor  |   Posted on Aug 29th, 2007 0

The basketball is reminiscent of Hootie and the Blowfish’s “Only wanna be with you.”

some of you guys are crazy. there are so many respected bands out there that stream the silly kind of commercial shit about which a lot of you are in such utter shock. you’d be surprised. just listen to the music and judge from there, and if you don’t like it, then don’t post, don’t waste your time. easy breezy. also, since most of you seem to be hating for the sake of attaching yourselves to some cool entity that is “hating bands that your cool friends hate,” I’ll inform you that Jimmy Eat World is highly respected; cooler to cooler folks than you, as that kind of thing seems to influence your opinion. Your’e being duped. Don’t listen to your silly friends with bad taste in music.

  27. historyman68  |   Posted on Aug 31st, 2007 0

funny, I always saw Ben Gibbard as a slightly-indier Jimmy Eat World… slightly chubby, do that weird boppy thing with their head when they play guitar… well, I guess that’s about all…

  28. Ann  |   Posted on Sep 1st, 2007 0

What’s with all the Futures hatred? That album is brilliant – I think it’s their best by far. Have any of you even listened to “23″ and “Polaris”? No one’s mentioned Say By My Side Tonight either… “Disintegration” is one of my favorite J.E.W. songs.

  29. this track shouldn’t have been the single- i got bored about 40 sec. into it. Though, i’d but the record just for Butch Vig.

  30. mscot  |   Posted on Sep 4th, 2007 0

Futures had some pretty amazing production on it. The guitar layering in itself is brilliant. It doesn’t hold up lyrically to clarity or bleed and it doesn’t have the pop hooks of bleed but it’s still a great album.

God I miss the promise ring. (the Nothing Feels Good era especially. Ya know, when Davey learned how to sing in key.)

  31. ConK  |   Posted on Oct 13th, 2007 0

Just saw them in Seattle and was by far the best live show I’ve seen them put on. (my fifth JEW show)

Clarity is the classic. Bleed American was brilliant in it’s accessability. I think “Hear You Me” ought to be played at every funeral. I agree with mscot about Futures – amazing production. Didn’t resonate with the album like I have with others. Not sure if it was lyrics or what, but everytime I hear a song off of it, I think, “Great song”.

  32. love this song…and Jimmy of course! check out the lyrics and don’t you talk bad about my jimmy!

  33. I lost faith in Jimmy Eat World on their last album but this song is promising. Promising enough to warrant me checking out the full album.
