This Sunday, Sting (the pro wrestler) and Mick Foley (also a pro wrestler) go head to head in a six-sided steel cage from which one will emerge the 2009 TNA World Heavyweight Champion. It’s called Lockdown Live and if it’s anything like The Wrestler (that was a documentary, right?) it’s gonna be very entertaining. You should probably sell those day three Coachella tickets now. My Boring Valentine more like it. Anyway the official theme for the match is Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet With Butterfly Wings,” and it’s not the first time their music soundtracked a TNA spot. But it is the first time Billy’s stepped inside the flaming, blood-soaked ring, reciting lyrics from one of his biggest hits slightly modified to promote a Pay Per View event. To wit, “Despite all your rage, you’re still just a rat in the six sides of steel cage.”

There’s also a longer Lockdown spot that uses the original recording:

It all goes down 4/19 at 8 PM EST at Philadelphia’s Liacouras Center.

In other news, Billy Corgan has officially joined the microblogging movement at twitter.com/billy.

He found God, maybe he’ll find a drummer on there.

Not very nice mattP (cage match?)

I can’t believe all of you actually think wrestling is fake. Billy knows the deal … I’m proud of him and ashamed of you all.

U gotta admit, in the first video, Corgan looks really cool with that hood on his head like a g from the hood. Can’t believe Mick Foley is still wrestling.

  10. Wrong. Just plain wrong.

  11. That was the most embarrassing thing I’ve watched all year. The guy clearly won’t be content until he’s taken a massive shit over every ounce of what made SP a once-great band. But when I look at his little bald head and innocent smile in his Twitter display pic…I just feel really sorry for him…

  14. I hate you Billy.

  15. Billy, F U and go to hell.

  16. Billy should plan a dance/pop hybrid album with Timbaland. It did wonders for Chris Cornell.

    Long time reader–first time responder.

I’ve always hated Billy Corgan for some many reasons but I would like to point out to all the haters right now that Corgan has been using his likeness in wrestling since the heydays of the Pumpkins. He was on ECW programming and I believe he showed up to WCW events all the time as well.

I know it’s uncool to like wrestling but might I remind all of you Bob Mould was a booker/writer for WCW during the mid-90s as well. It’s campy fun and these sort of bad hard rock songs are what wrestling lives for.

Now let’s all go back to hating Corgan for the real reason: a lack of talent and a bowling ball head.

  18. Billy Corgan is Eminem?

  19. jeez… doesn’t he have enough dough? he could just ride it out, and we could all reminisce about the old albums?

Billy has always been a big wrestling fan and obviously thought it was a fun thing to do. I don’t see the big deal. Oh wait, it’s a stereogum blog about Billy Corgan…which always turn into a big deal. Has there been a week where a Billy Corgan thread hasn’t been in the top 10 most commented?

  22. For their next commercial….
    Special Poetry Slam!

  23. You guys know the song GLOW is named after a defunct women’s wrestling league right?
