Way back in 1998, Mos Def and Talib Kweli got together to release the classic underground rap album Mos Def And Talib Kweli Are Black Star. Since then, both guys have gone on to long and checkered solo careers, and most has changed his name to Yasiin Bey; it’s gonna take me a while to get used to that one. Along the way, they’ve collaborated a bunch of times, generally sounding better together than either one does on his own. But they haven’t done a whole ’nother album together.
That may change in 2012; Kweli and (fine, sure) Bey are reportedly working on a new record inspired by Aretha Franklin. On Black Friday, they released a new single, the Madlib-produced “Fix Up.” And today, there’s another one out there on the internet: “You Already Knew,” produced by Madlib’s baby bro Oh No. So they’re apparently keeping it in the Stones Throw family for this one, which is a good look for them. They’re also rapping really well, which is an even better look. Listen to both tracks below.
“You Already Knew”:
Black Star Aretha will be out sometime next year, God willing. Maybe it’ll even have a better title by then.
