For this year’s CMJ party we teamed up with The Believer to bring you an excellent night of music that will begin much earlier than last year’s Late Night with Gang Gang Dance et al. The event takes place Tuesday, 10/20. Doors open at 7PM and you can expect the first band at 8PM. We’re doing it again at The Studio at Webster Hall because last year we had such a blast.

So who’s playing? We’ve lined up noisy synth-pop Band To Watch Cold Cave, who recently signed to Matador and (sorta) solidified their rotating lineup as Heartworm Press co-founder and Philadelphia lifer Wesley Eisold, ex-Xiu Xiu member Caralee McElroy, and Dominick Fernow, aka Prurient. (Can’t wait to see them do “Love Comes Close.”) You’ll also catch The Golden Filter, who struck as an amazing live entity when we caught them (twice) at SXSW last year. That New York “discopop” duo of Penelope and Stephen have done some amazing remixes this year, but watching them do their own material live is transportive. Adding more guitars to the mix, good-time Philly quartet Free Energy do Television/Strokes-esque rock ’n’ roll that makes sense on DFA. They recently released a James Murphy-produced 7″ on the label and have the full-length Stuck On Nothin’ due out in early 2010. The night will get started with True Panther artist Glasser, aka L.A. resident Cameron Mesirow. She has something Kate Bush, Broadway Musical, highly percussive, and super compositional about her danceable bedroom recordings, but it makes just as much sense that she’s been remixed by Lucky Dragons and Tanlines and collaborates live with Foreign Born’s Matt Popieluch. (She also recently designed a crazy organ.)

After the bands are done, some of our favorite musicians will try their hands at DJ-ing until everyone’s good and ready to go home. For that task, we’ve lined-up Sub Pop’s excellent “blissed out buzzsaw” crew Dum Dum Girls psychically minded Brooklyn duo Telepathe, and others we’ll announce soon.

The show’s FREE, but it’s RSVP ONLY, so go to stereogum.com/cmj09 and reserve your space. RSVP does not guarantee entrance, but it is required (it’ll be first come, first served, as long as you have RSVP’d). Note: It’s 19+. Sorry people younger than 19. And no sponsors means no free booze so you’re on your own there.

Get psyched:
