The traveling rap festival Rock The Bells has announced this year’s lineup, and it’s doing things a bit different this summer, throwing two-day affairs in San Bernadino, CA (8/18-19), Mountain View, CA (8/25-26), and Holmdel, NJ (9/1-2). Perennial Rock The Bells father figure Nas will headline, as will stonery pop-rap stars Kid Cudi and Wiz Khalifa. And as always, there’s plenty on the bill for rap dorks to dork out over. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony will reunite to perform their classic 1995 album E. 1999 Eternal in full. Method Man and Redman will do their rowdy 1999 collaborative affair Blackout! Missy Elliott and Timbaland will hit the stage for rare performances together. Deltron 3030 — the conceptual sci-fi rap group of Del, Dan The Automator, and Kid Koala — will reunite. So will the full lineup of the Hit Squad, the great early-’90s Timberland-to-your-face rap crew: EPMD, Redman, DAS-EFX, Keith Murray, and K-Solo. They found K-Solo! Bay area legends E-40 and Too Short will perform together, which is too often. All four members of the California supergroup Black Hippy — Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul, and Jay Rock — are also on the bill.
The rest of the bill is predictably loaded, and it pulls from all over the rap atlas: the Diplomats, ASAP Rocky, Atmosphere, 2 Chainz, Ice Cube, DJ Quik, Yelawolf, J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco, Mac Miller, Naughty By Nature, Big Daddy Kane, Salt-N-Pepa, Slick Rick, Prodigy, and a few others, with more to be announced. It’s the rare bill poster where you’ll see the names “Immortal Technique” and “Tyga” right next to each other. RZA and Supernatural will host the thing. And the most puzzling inclusion may be this one: Yo Gabba Gabba! god-figure DJ Lance Rock and “friends.” So if Foofa corners you by the sidestage and blathers endlessly about the Canibus/LL Cool J beef, don’t say you weren’t warned.
