The upcoming Sweetheart 2014 compilation brings together top alternative musicians covering their favorite love songs. We’ve already heard the album’s first three tracks: Jim James doing Bob Marley’s “Turn Your Lights Down Low,” Vampire Weekend’s version of Andrea Bocelli’s “Con Te Partiró,” and Beck’s John Lennon cover “Love.” Now comes one of the deeper cuts, Fiona Apple and her sister Maude Maggart covering “I’m In The Middle Of A Riddle,” originally written by the Austrian film composer Anton Karas in 1949 and performed by Karas and Kay Armen in 1950. This is definitely the kind of song I can imagine Fiona Apple listening to in her spare time, all old-timey harmonies set to an easygoing waltz that feels like coy flirtation. Hear her and Maggart do the tune justice below.
